Title: Rotary Drive & Slide Day @ Finmere on 29th October 2010
Post by: CrissyUK on July 20, 2010, 06:41:43 PM
Good afternoon All,

We (MRC / RX8OC) have been offered the opportunity to host our own car control / drift day on Friday 29th October at Finmere Airfield which is just off the A421 (approx. 8 miles south of Silverstone) on the Oxfordshire/Bucks border. This event is run by our good friends at Mazda on Track who will be offering assistance and guidance to all participants as well as marshaling the event.

The cost for the day will be around £50.00 per person based on 20 participants and for this we will have:

1 handling circuit consisting of a coned track that incorporates a short straight and a sequence of increasingly tight corners that will help sharpen up your driving skills (the first sweeping bend is also good for practicing power slides  )

1 sprint circuit consisting of another coned track laid out in a much larger area than the handling circuit and this can be either driven at speed or sideways (or a combination of both).

EXTRAS
=======

Mint Tyres will be invited to the event which means you can hire a set of crappy old tyres from them for something like £2.50 / corner plus fitting thus taking away the worry of tyre wear. They also rent rims with drift tyres on and these work out at around £40 for two.

If there is enough interest in having a go at drifting we can turn the handling circuit into a play pen for parts of the day.

Formal 1-on-1 tuition during the course of the day is available at extra cost although when I went both Nick and Al were more than happy to jump in the car for a couple of laps to help out with any sticky points and feedback was given all the time.

Formal 1-on-1 tuition with Steve Lewis, ARDS racing driver instructor will also be available at extra cost. Now, for this to take place we need to have a minimum number of takers because we need to hire a third area of Finmere where Steve can work his magic and this, unfortunately, has a substantial cost which could run at around £40+ extra per person depending on numbers. Something worth considering especially if you fancy doing your first track day in the future (see Oulton Park on 17th November and Brands Hatch on 3rd December).

So who\'s coming?

Please add your names to the list in the usual way:

I\'M IN
Casey (action day + tuition with Steve)
CrissyUK (action day + tuition with Steve)

All the best,
Crissy

I believe MoT have a self imposed noise limit of 95db-ish, however when I went there last October it wasn\'t tested. The airfield is fairly isolated from civilization so as long as your car isn\'t outrageously noisy you\'ll be fine. Mine isn\'t quiet either and nobody complained.  :)

Also, you\'ll find that in the morning you\'ll be going round one at the time to give people the opportunity to familiarize with the circuits but then as soon as everyone look like they know where they are going it\'s usually 2 cars on at the time, especially on the larger circuit.

:)

This sounds very interesting and is not far from me at all! ;)

Will be keeping an eye on this and hope to join in!

Only thing it it\'s late in the year, so weather could be pants......

I did this day last month and had a great day.  It quickly turned into 2 cars on at the same time, and was even better once the 2nd circuit (drift circuit during that day),as there was very little waiting for you\'re next turn.

Hi,

The price of £50 per person.  Is this correct or is this per car, with an extra fee should you wish to come along with 2 drivers?

Thanks

Mark

Hi Crissy,

Just wondering if you have any news on this.  Im actually banking on it being per car and the supplement for extra driver as that is how they usually do it.  If they don\'t do it this way this time, then it makes little economic sense as I could book a normal Finmere day for me +1 for £79.

Anyway hoping that I can book this soon, as I may have talked my wife into leaving our kids for the day :)

Thanks

Mark

About 50 miles from the Scottish boarder on the M6 (just at the bottom of the lake district). York, Elvington & Oulton are all easy enough to get to around an hour and a half drive. There is probably other smaller venues that could do this sort of thing too. Im sure there would be plenty of interest as we don\'t really get many events up this way.

Adrian - would Blyton be close enough for you (it\'s closer than Cadwell). It\'s just south of S....horpe (blimey, the swear filter just cut in trying to say "Sc u n thorpe" :3Confused). AA route planner says 165 miles form Kendal via motorways (less miles if you go across country).

Crissy, if "yes" from Adrian, maybe Blyton could be used as a "Finmere" type venue??

Maybe. Its still a 3+ hr drive each way though.

I just kinda suck having to travel so far to do an event of anykind. Plus I don\'t think 6+ hrs of driving plus track time in 1 day is that good for the old FC!

Thanks

Can I put him down as a reserve for the time being? The idea for this was to be a rotary themed day but if we don\'t have 20 rotaries he is more than welcome to come along and I\'d love to blag a passenger ride in the Skyline.

My dream is to own a drift car and it\'s a very close call between an FD and a Skyline.

Logistics (or a guardian angel) are preventing me from going ahead with this at the moment, but then again Christmas is only around the corner...   LOL

Good, so the penalty that your brother has to pay for not having a rotary is that he has to give people passenger rides  :D  Sounds like a fair deal to me!!!  ;)

Yer I would like a Skyline one day.  He has the 32 GTS-T and I have to say it is a bargain.  He has just fitter ORC clutch and flywheel and it really does fly.  For £1700 it is great and very fun.  We have both had TT Supras in the past (BPU\'d to around 400 BHP) and the GTS-T feels every bit as fast up to around 120 leptons ;)

Lol, treat yourself at xmas.
Also sounds a fair deal to me :)

Post by: CrissyUK on August 31, 2010, 05:45:39 PM
Dear All,

Due to unforeseen circumstances we have to change the date of our Rotary Drive and Slide Day at Finmere to the 22nd October. Apologies for the inconvenience and hope it won\'t affect your ability to attend.

Everything else remains the same and hope that after the fun we had at Rotorstock more of you will be tempted to join us for this reasonably priced day of awesome fun. Remember we have twice the circuits but half the people!

Could everyone who expressed an interest be so kind to confirm by September 15 if they are still able to attend on the 22nd instead of the 29th October?

Many thanks

Paul / Mark,

I am ever so sorry... I posted all the info on the RX8OC forum and forgot to do the same on here!!!  Women, huh?! :D

Most definitely still on!!  Here it goes:

QuoteDear Drivers!

With the day fast approaching, please find the following information on how, when and where to be to get the very best out of the day!

The Day!
The format of the day is will be slightly different to previous days in that due to the high demand for instruction we will begin the instruction stage at 9am. If you have booked instruction could you please arrive by 8:30 for sign-on. Places will be allocated on arrival. Please also note that tuition slots are shared with another driver as it is an integral part of the process that you also get to observe the handling characteristics of the cars was well.

Currently, we have unusual weather for us in that the BBC forecasts White Cloud, although any regulars will know that we are bound to have sunshine.

You need to bring:
Yourself, obviously.
Both parts of your driving license, if you have a two part licence, should we need to see them.
A crash helmet (if you don\'t have one, we rent them out for £10 for the full day).
Clothing - long sleeves are not required, but it is an airfield, so dressing warm never hurts!
Lunch - There is a Tescos and a pub nearby, but on this particular open day there will be no on-site catering, except for cups of tea and coffee. We will be breaking for 45 minutes.

Your car:
Your car should be in good mechanical condition. This means that your brakes should be fully operational, and your tyres should have good tread.
You should aim to have around 1/2-3/4 of a tank of fuel for the day.
There are fuel stations approximately 5 minutes away from the venue with BP Ultimate.
We are running a self volunteered 98dB noise limit.

When and Where?
Our days are held at Finmere Aerodrome. The closest town is Little Tingewick. The venue is marked on most signs as \'Sunday Market\' - and is right off the main roundabout. There will be a Mazda on Track banner outside the entrance.
We are asking customers to arrive after 9:00 for signing on, unless booked on tuition. There will be a mandatory safety briefing at 9:45am which all drivers must attend, unless involved in tuition at that point. Those drivers will get a separate briefing before going on track. Don’t worry, it does not take long. The key point is if you don’t behave, we will release the MoT Leopard, for her breakfast.
We will pause at 12:30 for lunch. Driving will finish at 16:00.

Here is the map of the area: http://tiny.cc/iIOPY

Passengers and Tools / Spare Wheels.
Whilst we cannot guarantee the safety of any tools and spares left around, we will have a designated area for tools, spares and fuel cans.
Passengers will need to sign an indemnity on the day.

Tyre services
We will be joined by Mint Tyres who spacalise in supplying part worn tyres at very reasonable prices for destroying on days like these. Their details are below and you should contact them directly to discuss any requirements you have. They can also fit new “end of day” rubber if you so require for your drive home. Also our sister company MoT Motorsport can supply new road going, track capable tyres at very reasonable prices.
Federal 595 RSR tyres currently
195 50 15” £65 + Vat
215 45 17” £90 + Vat
235 40 18” £130 + Vat

QuoteMint TyresTyre Change £5.00 per rim

Thanks Crissy. Do you know if the 98db is static or srive by? Totally forgot about this aspect as I will be using my new EGI which is a lot louder than my old one. Should be fine if drive by, but not so sure about static.

Thanks

Mark

Edit:
Just looked on there site and it says that its a self imposed 100db limit, so I should be ok.

You\'ll be fine. I have the same problem with the Scoobie, have no idea how many dB it produces but as a gauge I could hear the mechanic revving it for the MOT some 400+ yards away and around a block of buildings.

Worst case scenario it will be you, Mrs Hanky and myself sitting on the naughty noisy step for the day  :D

Lol, oh MrsHanky is no longer coming along as she does not want to leave our newish baby just yet.  But a friend might take her place if he can get a permission slip :)

Brakes were sorted last night but unfortunately not tested as the battery is fubarred :(
So one more thing to get now.

Looking forward to Friday though :)

(Largely a re-post of what I said on RX8OC forum, if you\'ve read that already, stop here........)

Awesome day out; many thanks to Crissy, plus NickD and the MoT ream for getting this together (and arranging the fine weather ;)). Although I didn\'t use Mint Tryes\' services this time around, big thankyou to Steve and his team as they seemed to be working flat out for much of the day.

A fantastic bunch of people turned up, so a great social day out too. Had a massive laugh attack passengering in Paul\'s red Knightsport RX-7 FD. God, I wish I had that acceleration in a straight line - great handling in the corners too.

I was on my own tyres (new a few months ago)  and wanted to use the day to explore the limits (and Tein suspension settings) in order to feel more confident in pushing it harder on trackdays. I\'ve never had the DSC fully off for such a long period and feel massively more confident now at early sensing of under/oversteer and controlling it. No big drifting sessions from me (on my tyres!), just plenty of under/over steer excursions, which earned me the title of "Mr Sensible" from NickD

Hopefully they\'ll be some pics/vids later to show people what they missed. For £50, this was a great day out.

Had a great day too. all that for £50!
I have to say I had great fun joy riding in my own car, driving like I stole it and not worrying about hurting me, the car or finding my self locked up in jail!
I was amazed what the FD could do and now aware of what I cant do (yet maybe) nice bunch of people, all in all a good day + weather !

Casy glad you enjoyed the \'joy\' ride!

Hope to see some pictures/videos?

Paul.

Also had a great day and wanted to say thanks to the organisers.  Nice to meet you Paul, your FD was very nice and sounded loads better without the bung :)

I took some in car video footage but have only upoladed 1 so far.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xwrgp8M7LFw

Looked and felt so much quicker in the car.  My brother was videoing this from outside at the same time and it looks loads slower and really quite rubbish :(

Really had a hard time trying to get the backend out and was gutted when in my brothers skyline as it was just so much easier with a truck load of power.  Hay ho.

Great day anyway and well worth £50.

Thanks

Mark

It was great to meet Paul and see Mr Hanky and his brother going round the circuit, sorry I never got to say hello to either of you.  :)

The boys on the RX8OC forum came back all excited and can\'t wait for the next fun day out so I hope that you will be able to make it again.

Having miserably failed to encourage our friends to embrace smooth and sensible driving techniques the new "Just Slide, f**k the Drive" day will be held somewhere South West of London direction (I can\'t remember the name of the place), again in an airfield but with tarmac surface. It will be another reasonably priced day out organised by our lovely friends at Mazda on Track and will probably take place on a Saturday sometime between January and February to break up the monotony of the winter months.

Will post up the details as soon as they are available and will be praying for a mild winter so that we can all get there.

Well done Mark and Paul for coming along, it was awesome watching you giving it large around the cones!  :)

Hi Crissy,

Yep, sorry I did not get a chance to say hello but you were either busy chatting away or out in the Scooby :)

Good plan with the f**k the drive and JUST slide say :)
My whole day was spent just trying to make the car go sideways.  Unfortunately there wasn\'t much success.  Now looking at diff options for my car :)

Might try and get along to the next one if it isn\'t too far away.

Thanks again for organising a great day

Mark

Hey guys,

The venue is near Stroud in Gloucestershire. Would you be happy to travel all the way there?

:)

Chrissy, Thanks for sorting the day and pencil me in for some other similar days you may have planned!

Great vid\'s and pics too everyone.

The car actually drove beter going home and steering lighter (I think)
but that may of been down to the Super unleaded and two botles of Octane boost and the bung out of the exhaust (all a bit different to the journey up)
Finnaly got home about 8:30 that evening with aching shoulders!

Cheers Paul

Right as requested by a few people, you know who you are:Laugh

I have put all 944 images up on photobucket, I dont intend weeding out the out of focus or total misses, I\'m using it as a dumping ground for raw footage.

So if you fancy trawling through the album for shots of you be my guest!
