Title: Scans wanted!!!
Post by: Ian65 on July 16, 2010, 06:31:59 PM
I\'ve been putting together a PDF ( or e-book) of magazine articles on the 1st gen RX7 which includes roadtests, buying guides, maintenance guides, brochures, adverts, etc, etc.
It\'s only for fun, not financial gain and everyone will be welcome to a copy for free ( if they want one!) when it\'s done.
Many of use have some of these stored away but I thought it would be nice to put them all together in one book, albeit a PDF one.
I\'m up to 143 pages at the moment but it could go into many hundreds. I\'ve been concentrating on UK articles so far but would like to appeal for scans of any features members may have.
I\'m especially interested in any from the monthly classic magazines.
Didn\'t Practical Classics have a fb as a project about 10 years back and gave it away as a prize?  (that sort of thing)

I\'m going to suss out how to make the thing ( as it stands so far) downloadable this weekend and then you will be able to see whats already included. If anyone has better quality scans of items already included, please let me have them and I\'ll replace the inferior copy.
If anyone has anything I could use, please email them to me at:

ian08 at sky.com

thanks

Not yet!

I\'ve also had a couple of well meaning emails from people worried about copyright implications.
It\'s a grey area but I\'m not going to get involved with anything that will cause me grief.
I\'m not going to publish it anywhere or make it widely available. If forum members known to me  contribute any articles they own and would like a copy I will send them one but that it as far as it will go.
Some road tests are 31 years old from publications that no longer exist but there is always someone looking to object to anything they can.
If I get any negative feedback from anywhere at all I\'ll keep it to myself and send it nowhere. I\'m doing it for my benefit, no one elses!

Well, I got a few clippings that I would be more than happy to share with you (need to get them scanned in and not currently in my posession) so you can keep them all to yourself and not give me a copy (wink wink) so you dont infringe copyright, in the unlikely event that a copyright reresentative comes knocking on my door, he can come in and I can tell him where to go over a nice cuppa.

Might take me a week or so, but I got a 18a road test and a few other interesting/odd bits.

Guys,
I\'ve had some great items sent to me for this collection and it\'ll be a great read.
I\'m going to put it all together next week. ( it\'s easier to get all the docs and then convert them into a pdf all together rather than add bits in later).
If anyone has anything they would like included, please email it to me before Friday next week...
I\'ll then put it all together.
cheers,
Ian

Quote from: RamoNZ;712228Any progress on this?

It\'s been a long time coming but the 1st edition is done.

It still needs some work, mainly the index needs doing and I still have scans sent to me that I\'ve yet to include but at the moment the book stands at 344 pages and there are some fantastic articles in there.
A big thanks to everyone who sent articles in, especially those who spent their valuable time scanning their collections for me, I really appreciate it, ....thankyou.

I had an idea but no knowledge of how to go about putting this together when I started, I\'d never even made a pdf file before so I\'m please at how this has turned out.

I\'m struggling to compress the file enough at the moment for it to download fast. I\'ve uploaded it to here...

https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8jAGJaws4QeOTIxZmNkMGQtY2JlMS00MzI3LTg0MWQtOWU3MTc5OGMzYzg1&sort=name&layout=list&num=50

and you can download it from this location.
Beware though that it is 267mb so will take a while to come down if you have a slow connection.
Alternatively, I\'m happy to put the file onto a disc and post it out to regular
1st gen forum members who would like a copy for free ( within reason, I\'m not going into mass production!)
Email me a postal address if you want a disc.
If anyone has sent me a scan that isn\'t yet included, please don\'t be disappointed or annoyed, it\'ll go in the next revision that I\'m already working on.
If anyone reads this book and finds any mistakes or duplication of articles, please let me know because I\'m getting to the stage where I can\'t see the wood for the trees now I\'ve spent so long looking at these files.

Clive,
I don\'t know what\'s going on with google docs. I think it is something to do with the authorisation code at the end of the link?

I\'ve found that if you copy and paste this link into your browser, it works fine.

https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B8jAGJaws4QeOTIxZmNkMGQtY2JlMS00MzI3LTg0MWQtOWU3MTc5OGMzYzg1&export=download&authkey=CMSdiIEI&hl=en

It still says that they are unable to virus scan it due to the size of the file but my AVG antivirus has checked it and states it\'s clean.

I\'d have taken the RX7 over the Bob Marley any day. I looked at a 320i back in the 80\'s and it didn\'t even come with a radio..... everything was an option on top of the purchase price.

Extras, I think that was what put me off, and why I started buying Mazda\'s in the first place, in saying that in my series 1 it only came with a radio, and the cassette player was an extra.

Interesting page about koni shocks and anti-roll bars too. Wonder if they stock them still :D

Ian

Well done.  That will give me some great holiday reading.  I will take a look through my brochures as well and see if I have any interesting ones which I will be able to scan in a couple of weeks when I get back to work.

Thanks for the effort in putting this together.

Dave
