Title: threaded suspension bolt!! help!!
Post by: esxboy1 on July 13, 2010, 07:50:24 PM
hi guys ,ive been having a knocking noise since i bought the car coming from front drivers side ,ive near on stripped all the arms, suspension, pulled and pushed all the bushes and even taken it to a mot station to no avail to find the problem.now just bye chance i checked the first place to look last which was the top 3 bolts on the suspension strut under the bonnet and one was undone tried to do it up but just kept turning.now ive ripped the whole leg out to find the thread has completely stripped of thread.now was wondering if this could be a source of my banging when moving about in short proximity? any ideas?

Sounds like it could be a good place to start. I\'d also check the nut in the centre of the pillow ball ( the one that attaches to damper). If that is loose it\'ll clunk over bumps.

Is there any sign that the shock has moved. As in the 3 studs in the holes. If the shock has been moving around then I would think that all the studs would all have wear on them and probably the holes in the body too.

on the top of the strut the paint around the nuts have warn away prob 10mm all way round the nuts but its seems the same on the other side but ive tried to tighten the nuts up on the passenger side but they are nipped up hard no movement there, just wondered if one ouch of the 3 nuts not tight would cause movement just out of interest

I\'d be surprised if it wasthe fault. But you can bash the studs out and replace them.
I\'d have thought it will be the pillowball bearing in the top mount. If not looked after (they need regular maintenance) then they develop play VERY quickly.
They\'re about £40 from Tein IIRC.

a couple of mine do this and i have no knocking problems.

massively irritating tbh; i use a torque wrench set to the factory manual\'s values to do everything up and these started spinning before the wrench clicked. it\'s just going to be a pain in the arse when i want to swap the front shocks out :/
