Does anyone know if you can fit one of these \'motorbike\' exhaust cans on a early rx7?
Title: bit more on the project

If your prepared to fart about and do a bit of fabrication you should be able to make on fit. :)
Title: bit more on the project
Post by: MikeLMR on July 19, 2005, 11:01:22 AM
Bike cans are no use on a car, they are almost always straight through and have very little sound absorbing material in them. A rotary needs a good silencer that can take the heat and if you want it to be even remotely road legal you will probably need a good sized back box and a couple of smaller silencers.
Title: bit more on the project
Post by: Brett on July 19, 2005, 12:28:38 PM
You mean we are supposed to run silenced exhaust pipes? That would explain the plod interest on my old rx then....

Try looking at the "supertrapp" website. they look pretty damn good on the 1st gens, various diameters for sale as well plus you can remove the internal discs or fit more in depending how loud you want it etc.

The megaphone series is the 1 you want.

I\'m sorry I put you onto clive dude.  Since then I\'ve had no end of trouble with the car he \'restored\' - the rebuilt engine was just painted, & blew up on me, the car is full of worrying noises (I\'m having to pay Tim to strip down the suspension as we speak) & the paint on the bumpers is peeling off where he just sprayed over the original paint without any prepping!  When you asked me the car looked fine & was running - I didn\'t know id been had back then.

Sorry again mate.

just thought i would update some pics as i\'m now a full member, i had to scrap the original alarm (after fitting it!) as it seemed a bit un reliable just what you dont need when you have no door locks!
so the new alarm has been fitted and i have a week off to try and get somewhere with it (is there somewhere you can buy time before the summer?)
Also got the wheels powder coated black by a friend, thought about it for a long time but i think they will look good, very happy with the finish.
The new mirrors arived from Oz so they can be used!! just waiting for them to be sprayed in yellow.

Mark, are those 15" wheels? What width are the tyres? I\'m on the stock 14" alloys and Yokohama A539 195/60/R14 tyres.

What springs are you going to fit? I am looking to reduce the ride height at the rear of the car. Will probably leave the front otherwise I\'ll start eating speedbumps.

Hope you make it to RSIII, looking forward to meeting some of the crew.

Thought standard size was 205/60/14
Mine are 16\'s but you can run 18\'s if you want big, I decided on 16\'s as its gonna be quite low on the ride so more for comfort really, I\'ve got 215/40/16 on the front with the arch taken out of the wing and spacers with extended studs and 225/40/16 no modification needed
Think there springs were racing beat, that\'s what\'s on it at the mo but I have another set which where modified to let the car sit a lot lower, I ran them on my other 7 and they were good as long as there arnt any speed bumps around which is why I\'m gonna see how the standard lowered springs are (if that makes sence) :chat

Have gone for 195\'s at the front to reduce the heaviness of the steering at low speed/when parking etc. Still on 205\'s at the back but they are a bit worn, think i\'ll try and get some new 205 Yoko\'s or Toyo\'s at the back. Those Toyo\'s you have are very good value, presumably they will be even cheaper for 14" wheels  :) . Have just sent my wheels off for refurb at Pristine Wheels in Milton Keynes, will do a post to show the outcome in a week or so.

Have seen some Racing Beat race springs that feature a deadwound section which you can chop away at to get the required ride height.

Cheers Mark, I\'m only after 2 cos I have 2 BRAND NEW wheels that have never even had tyres on them! (and am building up quite a collection of spare wheels as well), so would only really be interested if yours are in very good nick/like new (i.e. lacquer still on and not scratched) so that they match OK. Think this may be asking too much though. No worries if not cos Pritine Wheels have given me a very good quote of around £45 per wheel for chemical cleaning, bead blasting, powder coating, diamond cutting, and lacquering.........and shipment back to Protyre near where I live! I\'ll hold off the job until I hear back from you as to the condition of your wheels.

Thanks

after having trouble getting the car to pull after 3000rpm and playing with the timing even though the car would start first time, i found the problem,
Many thanks to carl for his advice i defentaly feel it helped, a bit of oil in the secondary butterflys in the carb and off i went for a quick spin round the block it pulled a little at first and then pow off she went before i knew it i was doing 90, i think it just needed a good run after all the shell hadnt moved for 7-8 years and the engine hadnt been driven hard for a good 4 years, now i have a grin on my face again so again thanks carl

Excellent Mark,    Hope to see the car down south in a couple of weeks, I hope you will clock the miles up in it to get the benefit of all the hard work,,  Did you find any mounts for rear seat belts???    they are quite easy to make if you do not mind drilling holes in the car under the seats........

very good work, man. i love to see someone get their car together and be able to document the stages of work. i\'m in the infant stage right now, myself. i know it\'s going to be a while, but threads like this always build strength and motivation. nice color, by the way.

Excellent news on the paint Mark, must be gutting knowing the car is so close to being finished. I wish I had planned ahead to go to Rotorstock, would have given me some inspiration for my car.

Unfortunately I am working, and can;t get time off at such short notice. Will hopefully see a few pics on this site!

Pip at WGT called yesterday and my lower manifold has turned up! finally i can start looking at getting the weber fitted!

Santa Pod was a great event for those who couldnt make it, although there was a lot of series 3\'s there was defentaly interest in my gen 1 which is great when most of the cars there were 8k plus a few mk1 MR2\'s i think the jap show at Peterborough will be a better turn out for some of the old school!!!

Bit of a strange knocking coming from the front shocks, looking to replace them, does anyone know where you can get top monts from?
think it could be them?

for strut tops try
Noltec in Aus
Racing beat/Mazdatrix
G Force Engineering (Jim Susko 1st gen suspension setup guru)
Ground Control in the states

Replacement shocks are getting a bit hard to find (well I struggled)

you have a choice of

Tokico Blues (fast road shock)
Tokico Illuminas (adjustable)
Koni (I reckon the sports are no longer made)
KYB (sort of OEM spec replacements, not uprated but gas shocks rather than oil filled as per standard)
errmm thats about it I think.

I had been told that Mk1 MR2 REAR shock inserts from Koni (they still do the sports) can be fitted with minor mods but you would have to check Ausrotary for all the details.

Thanks Mike like i say not sure of the problem but a load knock when ever i touch a speed bump or rough road, to be fair i did\'nt chage them when i did the car so i will pull them off and have a look, i have some lowered springs to go on anyhow, thanks for the contacts:Thumbsup!

if they are the original oil filled ones they are probably shot, if they are the new insert type they might have been installed incorrectly when whoever changed them got them done as you are suposed to shim the insert so that the top nut clamps the insert in tight, no shims = the top nut not clamping the insert and a nasty rattle. It could of course be any number of other things too !

well i can get HP blues for about £120 + UK tax import and the Illuminas for about £250 + UK tax import (full sets), has anyone got these on there rex?
Koni\'s are £60 for fronts plus shipping? +UK tax
KYB are £115 + UK tax (full set)
has anyone got these on there rex? any recormendations

got the KYB\'s on the front of the 323 (Rx7 suspension) and Tokico Illumina\'s on the rx7 ... having not compared them directly to anything else I can\'t really comment. I went with the adjustables as it was a safer bet as they go from a lower damping rate than standard to a high enough rate to cope with much stiffer springs.

I wouldn\'t bother with lowering springs etc. convert the struts to coilovers ... cheaper in the long run and a spring rate change only costs £13 a pair :)

Where did you get yours from Mike? (coil overs) how would that work on the rears?

Thanks

Post by: MikeLMR on July 27, 2006, 04:43:46 PM
coil overs are made up from the kits you can buy. I already had a set purchased but the struts I bought already had set welded on. The spare set will be going on my 7 when I get it back.

Basically the universal threaded tubes are too large a diamter to fit over the standard struts but with a sleave welded to the strut and then a bit of grinding down they fit right over e and can be welded on with no problems.

I got the kit of bits from rally design but the finish of the parts isn\'t the best (they are good but not pretty) TAS used to make nicer ones but they are no longer trading.

I wouldn\'t buy a kit from the states as they are rip off ... much cheaper to buy the parts over here !

this is along the lines of what I was thinking for the back of mine, but with adjustable platforms welded to the car instead of the location tubes. Basically making the car suit the smaller diameters springs.

That does seem like a better plan Mike, but im no welder and to be honest the car probably isnt used enough don\'t mind spend some money on new shocks, it nice and easy and i can fit them, thanks for the advice though

just a quick update for all,
PAINT, nightmare!! had some more paint turn up wrong! u have decided to colour match it before it drives me mental so the light covers going to the painters before i go on Holiday and hopefully will be sorted when im back (early Sept)
SHOCKS, after looking at the shocks i found they were new!! turns out the springs had be cut at the top so they wern\'t sitting level, the top mount for the spring was banging agaist the top mount, hence the strange oversteer aswell!!
i have ordered some king springs which should lower here around 50 - 60mm
and should resolve the problem!!
had the fan belt snap yesterday, cut a long story short got one from Halfords which was a better belt with more teeth (this is a week after ordering 1 from Mazda with no teeth which turn up this morning!)
fitted the belt and it has solved the overheating problem, no screaching and she seems to pull better now!

Hi all,
Not updated my post for a while so here goes!,
King Springs are on there way from OZ and should be here next week
finally got some paint sorted so the car will be going back into the sprayers for the nose cone and a couple of other bits to be sprayed in the right colour + she will be polished for the first time as this was never done due to the paint cock up!
Resolved the problem with her getting a little warm, turns out there was a bag stuck to the rad, (its always something simple!)
other than that she\'s running better than ever, coming up to 6k on the engine so it\'s time for another oil change (so glad i can get oil cheap!)
hope to be at the old skool meet in Basingstoke early for next year
as for the carb, having trouble getting hold of pip at WGT he has all the parts but i dont have any more time off from work so i\'m looking to get it done in the early part of next year as the car will be in the garage for most of the winter anyway

Hi all, just thought i would update things, decided to take the mesh out from the front as i feel it is still restricting air flow (shame i liked the look) might try and fine some larger holed mesh to see it that is ok
king springs arrived might fit them up next week if the weather holds out, i have still be driving her even though the weathers poo, cant justify having her sat in the garage and not using it! (needs a good clean though!)
brought a series 2 strut brace which would fit ok (if i move the alternator and loose the dizzy!) saw it on ausrotory but sisnt take this into account! may move the alternator down to where the A/C pump was as this should help with the belt pulling the water pump better and better airflow for when the new carb is fitted

hope you all had a good new year and heres to more driving, braking and fixing in 2k7!

just a update really fitted the king springs so the cars sits nice now, still having a issue with a noisey front end (oh err!) so just ordered some Tokico HP\'s all round from the states, unfortunatly i would be able to make the old skool meet as i will be fitting them!
hope to get the car over to Pip at WGT by the end of April to fit the carb

been busy shopping just ordered some angel eye headlights, these should help me see at night now as the orignals are preety poor even with uprated bulbs, these use xenon bulbs so that should help and it also has a sidelight bulb (as shown)
toying with the idea of fitting a sleepy eye switch also (i know its not to everyones taste but its got to help with airflow and i think it will look good with just the angel eye ring on)
also ordered a new back box, one of these universal ones but with a removeable silencer which should help as ive a feeling it will be v load without!

MOT tomorrow will keep you all posted, took it out to check the new strut mounts (obviously not on the queens highway:2Rolleyes ) glad i did brakes felt a bit spongy so bleed them and there was air in each corner (its only be sat for 3 months so that surprised me, may be worth keeping a eye on it) also thanks to the dust that seems to form in the garage i tried to wash the front window, no washers, broken motor so changed that (again glad i checked things dont want it to fail on something silly!)

Well I dunno why they asked for the car in April, cos as far as I know they haven\'t touched it yet.  I\'ve been promised it back by the end of August....
I only put 6 months tax on it & the MOT will have expired (as will the summer) by the time I see it again, assuming they keep their promise.

Getting a bit frustrated mate.

Your yellow one is looking SWEEET tho.  Nice seats - was it a re-trim or are they from a later RX?

the seats are original gen 1 seats (i thought they were retrimmed) but i have been told they did a very small run in the US with Leather although the cost was very high hence why they are so rare

ordered the new grooved and drilled discs, axxis semi ceramic pads and stainless brake lines, going to order a new master for the brakes too (may as well have a complete overhall (can you still get caliper kits?)
noticed the clutch is loosing a very very small amount of fluid so ordered a new slave and master also a stainless clutch line

had the windows tinted sat but the guy has had to order a large piece to do the rear in one, so i have left the fronts out (have spare glass) but the rear quaters look nice, should be done next week

new ITG air filter arrived today should be a lot less restrictive than the K&N, pip said i was loosing 15 BHP because of it!!
didn\'t have many options as weber vertually sits on top of the engine

speedways do replacement calipers on a return basis. I swapped out the discs, pads and calipers on the rear not too long ago and it made a huge difference !

:Giggle  thanks oldone, i know your a big fan of the IDA, i wish i had gone that way from the start but hay i had the carb so on it went (hungry for more power now though!)
i was happy with the runs i made showed a couple of Honda\'s old skool can still do it, thinking about ditching the turbo idea (running non turbo rotors so seems pointless without a good engine set up for it)
may have to consider some 48\'s or 50\'s instead now!!!
i know Carl has 3 48\'s on his 20B he wants to upgrade to 50\'s!!

ok had the new alternator sitting around for a while and also a gen 2 fuse box. i was waiting for a bracket that has been made to fit the gen 2 fuse box in a gen 1 but it hasnt turned up yet (along with the complete bush kit)
so i thought i would have a look at it today and it fitted spot in with no drilling etc!
i now have a 80amp alternator instead of a 55amp and i have move fuses to use under the bonnet sweet

New complete poly bush set turned up the other week so i fitted the front bushies this weekend along with the 16" fan and digital controler, it was from the US so temp is currently set at 190f (88c in English) with the sensor just sitting in the rad top hose it also gives you a constant reading so it is much more reliable than the stock :cheers

i may get it for a little less, but i will have a Weber 45 and manifold for sale so the change from that shouldn\'t be to bad, it is the perfect set up for a standard 12a but the ported 13b i have it just doesnt do justice!!

my new headlights arrived this week (would of been handy for the tunnel run)
i was considering HID\'s but cant justify £100 really for how much i use the car at night have just put them on and the difference is amazing, here\'s a shot with the left one being the new headlight. the light is far crisper and i would say at least 40 - 50% better one of the best upgrades i have done so far

Lighting looks improved.ive seen a pair of headlamps with xenon bulbs for $5 in US.
Theyre called \'projector\'lights or similar.
Have seen high definition kits for $70 US dollars,so will look into that.
Your leather interior looks the biz,i think the savannah models in US had the leather interior.
Have you got lsd in rear diff?

thanks, i dont think we got leather in the UK (maybe a very expensive extra) but it was on top models in the US, the headlights are well worth it.
no LSD again i dont think it was a option over here as we didn\'t get a true GSL -SE model, no dash change, injection or LSD in the UK as standard

Just spent a good while reading through this topic, it\'s fantastic! Really looking forward to seeing this one in the metal.

Don\'t know if anyone has a copy of the 1984 sales brochure for the FB in the USA, but on the inside sleeve there is a picture of a mean-looking yellow FB that was raced in the 1983 IMSA GTU series. Reminded me of Mark\'s car!

Can only imagine what performance-related shenanigans are being planned...

The new wheels look great!, the only thing I would do is get rid of that rear spoiler I think it looks misplaced, I would go for a spoiler following the waistline of the car sort of puerta rican drag style, let me see if I can drag out some pics

I\'d love to find that louvered rear windscreen cover, seen it in a US brochure and think it looks superb, reminds me of the Murcielago (!).

The rear-side covers look great too. Anyone know where I could find something like that?

In terms of spoilers, I concur with the general opinion that a more \'stream-lined\' look better suits FBs. I really like the optional spoiler Mazda offered in terms of shape, too bad it was rubber though!

Bit of a let down.  Boost controler died, stuck on setting 3 of 4, so not making full boost.  Also had a rather large fuel/air leak from the top hatty thingamejig.

Long story short 203 at wheels.

Bunch of arse.  Still fun to drive tho.  Will try again with new controler & new gaskit.

so after waiting 3 months for a manifold for my 48IDA to turn up from OZ i decided to buy another one, only problem was the guy had a nice 51IDA for sale too!!!

now i already have a new weber 48IDA sitting here but this one is a little better and also fits in with any porting plans
the carb was runing on a simular engine to mine (street port) i know that 51\'s are ment for larger ports but they said it ran fine and i know Brian ran his on the same WGT street port as mine is
carb currently has 4Omm CHOKES, F11 EMULSION TUBES 235 MAIN JETS 120 AIR CORRECTION JETS 65 F 10 idle comes with orgional and large velocity stacks and a extended fuel bowl, all work carried out by racing beat  and is a italian weber

going premix anyway but sure i have seen a mod where the OMP lines are put into the 2 plugs in the inlet manifold (first photo)

so not updated for a while, starting to get things together for the 51IDA have sorted the omp lines by making a 2 into 1 splitter to feed straight into the fuel bowl on the weber, made a new end for the acc cable to fit the new bell pulley and have ordered some new fuel line as i think the fuel problem was down to the new lines i put on being 6mm not 8mm like i ordered! its always the simple things and i now know why it was a sod to get on! so tank off next week and fingers crossed i get now get enough fuel in the motor. i have also got a Mallory 4309 return regulator and need to get a couple more Earl fittings to finish that off, a couple of brackets need making up then we should be good to go with the 51! :yes

track day went really well learnt a lot about the car and the way it now handles, i have a nice wining diff now though (so many down shifts and high revs me thinks!) so looking for a LSD possibly torson from a late 1.8 mx5 but the old one will still be ok for a good few miles.
i have ordered the conversion kit to get my T11 calipers on front and rear, just need to clean them up, get discs and drill them to the 114 x 4 pcd (managed to get s4 4 stud hubds from the US)
brought the rest of the Earls fitting i needed to finish the fuel set up, looking to get the 51IDA on early next year and get her rolling roaded again!

ok apoligies for not being around lots going on for me the last few months,
update on the car is that the LSD has turned up and looks mint so happy wiht that, i just need to order the discs for the T11 brake conversion as all the other parts have now turned up.
just need to get a couple of fittings soldered to the fuel lines and i can start on the 51IDA conversion just wish i had a bigger garage to get the bits done now but i have some time off around Easter so aiming for getting it all done then

so i have a couple of days of and got round to fitting the new carb and pull the diff out, unfortunatly the ring gear and pinon are shagged so im after another case with good ones so i can do the lsd swap so that was put on hold, also still waiting for the calipers to come back from the powder coaters and the rebuild kits from the US. so i ploughed on with the 51IDA and new fuel set up, also fitted a heat sheild i had sitting around changed the oil and water so quite a busy couple of days. the jets i ordered didn\'t turn up either! so i have put the jets frm my 45doce into the IDA for now as the ones that were in there were for a BP and the mains were too big for my set up

so i have had the last few days off and with yesterday being a good one got a few more jobs done!
still awaiting some jets to get the fine tuning on the weber. been meaning to upgrade the headlight wiring so do that with a couple of relays and some direct wiring. also did a nice little trick with the headlight flasher/pass light, i usualy just flip the lights up and down for this but if you fit a rectifier diode (i used a 1n5408 from Maplins) between the flash (red and blue) and headlight up circit (red) make sure you get the diode in the right way (Photo) when you pull to flash it will also flips the lights, mod takes 2 minutes and for 20p well worth it:Thumbs-up

I bet it cost a fortune to ship that over.
A few years back, I bought a complete GSL-SE power steering setup from the U.S..... steering column, box, pump, lines, everything.
Cost me an absolute arm to ship it over... it was bloody heavy....
I then found out that it couldn\'t be converted to use on a rhd car and ended up chucking it in a skip!

What\'s the advantage of a GSL-SE positraction over a MX5 diff?

Hey mark are they bigger discs your running on the front?

Ive got a copy of the USA kit but dont want to go 5 stud as i believe it uses FC hubs..
Title: bit more on the project
Post by: mpk490p on May 02, 2010, 09:24:39 AM
yes TII discs and calipers front and rear, it wasn\'t a bolt on solution but in order to keep the 4 stud i got s4 hubs shipped from the US (they use the same calipers as our later s3 and 4 x 114.3) Billy at Re-speed let me ship the hubs to him then i had them and the conversion kit sent over as one to save on shipping, i just got the 3 extra holes drilled on the discs, because i have bump steer spacers i had to use a spacer behind the front discs and space out the caliper bracket to suit, i then had to put a extra spacer on the disc to get the wheel clearance i needed, you will also need extended studs (i have some ARP-100-7708\'s that were fitted then taken off again!, due to the extra spacer i needed the longest ones they did!) if you are running without the bump steers the disc should sit back on the hub but i would check all you measurements before you start the job

Handbrake is a tricky piece of kit.

I often have to push/pull on the drivers side cable link into the caliper clevis (and a little oil up the cable) just before an MOT.....always driver\'s side....??

Don\'t forget to check the handbrake adjuster for 5 clicks max on the ratchet as well.

As Dibs, Best of Luck.

finally did the S4 n/a gearbox swap yesterday, benefits are a longer 5th gear with a shorter 1st, 2nd, 3rd also believe a stronger box, once you have the gearbox out you just swap the tailends over, simples!

84-85  GSLSE   1st 3.622   2nd 2.186   3rd 1.419   4th 1.00   5th .807

87-88  N/a           1st 3.475   2nd 2.002   3rd 1.366   4th 1.00   5th .697

I also change the speedo drive although they looked the same i didn\'t fancy taking the risk once you remove the 12 bolts holding the tail section you then remove the small inspection plate and remove the 10mm bolt (S3) or role pin,  This pin will only come out one way so make sure the rolled pin hole is rotated down towards the tailshaft housing. While lowering your housing make sure to place the shifter linkage into the shiftrod forks on the box on add a little gasket sealant to the face
s4 gear box on the right, it had additional vents in it compared to the s3

Na thats the beauty of it, i was already running a S4 starter motor but a s3 will fit too, because you swap the tailends over its the same mountings and uses the stock prop, you just get the different gear ratios, be good for you with the mileage you do
