I\'ve just had the rex MOT\'d, and it\'s all fine apart from it failed it\'s emissions test being 0.38% over on the CO.
I have noticed since owning the car it does smell very strong. I know that these tend to smell a bit, and since it doesn\'t have a cat it will obviously smell a bit more, but it seems pretty excessive. I can smell it in the car sometimes, and when it was on the ramp in the MOT test centre it was pretty bad, making the whole garage smell. It doesn\'t tend to smoke or anything either. I\'ve recently replaced the oil, filter and plugs etc.
It\'s an 87 EGi n/a. I have had a search but can\'t find a whole lot of information, so any ideas what might be causing it, and any advice on what I can do about it would be greatly appreciated! :)
Give it a good run out before you take it for test. If it doesn\'t help at least it\'ll make you smile a bit. Also can you turn the tick over down a little so its not putting as much crap out the back end.
Have you still got the airpump on the car?
Does it still have the complete standard exhaust and airpump?
If it smells rich at idle then you can alter the idle mixture using the pot behind the airbox.
I\'ll give it a good run before the retest, I also bought some BG44K and put that in and gave it a good drive tonight. I\'m not sure if it has the air pump still, but it has a decat Rotechniks system, so I\'d imagine it\'s been removed/disabled etc? I\'ll have a check tomorrow though. Also, the EGR has been removed, which I assume would be adding to this?
Does the idle mixture control adjust the idle speed as well as the mix, or is it just the mix?
How old are the HT leads? Might be an idea to check those or change those as they are a perishable item, I know my turbo II ran much better with new HT leads.
What was your CO btw? 3.38%?
In comparison, my turbo II with full decat, but with air pump is 0.18%

3.88%, but went UP somehow to 4% today. 4% - 0.18%, fair bit of difference there!
I\'m not sure if the air pump is present, does anyone have a picture of one? Also, could anyone briefly explain the air pump system? Since you have a decat system, it must be useable with the decat, and it would be nice to get it sorted.
Could there be any serious engine related issues which might be causing this or adding to it or anything?
I think the air pump has been removed, the air pump looks like an air con compressor found on the exhaust manifold side of the engine, down and left of the alternator, might be an idea just to post up a pic of your engine bay, if the air pump has been removed correctly you should be running 2 belts on a double pulley on your alternator and there should be custom blanking plates fitted on the inlet manifold.

There\'s a photo, it was fairly big so click on the thumbnail for the full image. I think I can see a bracket part with nothing on it around the area you mentioned?
Yeah its gone alright. Aswell as the power steering if it had it.
Yep its gone lol although its good they have run a double pulley, the last owner knew what they were doing, also you seem to have the OEM headers? Meaning that you might be able to refit it if needed. Although you can use a corvette smog pump which is electrical to pass emissions, it has been done, but never seen it on here.
I can see the 2 studs for the mechanical PS, so it did have it, but it was stripped out, what is is like to drive? If you really want PS, you can get an electric PS pump out of a Saxo, apparently they are a direct fit for the rack!
At least your exhaust isn\'t like this:

You can just about see what an OEM air pump is like, its top right just under the thermostat neck:

Yeah, I\'ve been strongly suspecting it was gone since it was mentioned! I assume this is a big factor in the stink it makes then? If I were to get hold of another air pump, would it be a difficult job to refit it? I guess I\'d have to refit it, get a new belt for it and set it up etc, but would I have any complications with the pulleys or anything?
Sorry to keep asking all the questions, I\'ll miss the rex if it\'s not on the road though! Cheers for all the help so far too guys.
Also, I knew it had the PAS removed before I bought it, and it is heavy, but in a good kind of way when you\'re driving, as you get a lot of feel through the wheel. It\'s nice to feel a lot of what\'s going on, but you do get a work out parking/manoeuvring it! It did have power steering originally yes.
If your running a aftermarket exhaust you\'d have to have a nipple welded into it for the airpump to feed air into. Plus there are other bits you\'d have to get besides the airpump. 2 weeks ago I would have had all the bits you need or most of them. Basically the bits that have been blanked off. I\'d be a bit of a job to put back.
Might be able to sort it if the TPS is off, that might run it rich, do you know if the ECU has been chipped?

I wouldn\'t mind getting the welding done and the other bits, as long as it wouldn\'t be stupidly hard to source the parts, and as long as I had a chance of being able to do most of it myself. I was worried it might have been a big job, but it could really do with it, as it really smells strong.

As far as I\'m aware the ECU isn\'t chipped. How could I tell if the TPS was off? Or would it only be off if the ECU was chipped?
To be honest, like I said above, I don\'t mind getting into this and trying to get the air pump back in over time, but right now I suppose if there was a way for me to get it through the emissions, I\'d be able to get on with it. Any ideas what I could do? I\'ve heard about adjusting the air/fuel mix temporarily just to get through - could this be a solution for now? If so, where is the adjuster on the 13B? Or any other ideas I could try?
anyone have any ideas to the above at all? As soon as I get it past I can concentrate on doing some more! Getting it through on using the Air/Fuel mix would be fine, as I could put it back after and source the bits for an air pump and everything else I need.
