Just wonering if anybody has had these probs before and knows what the cause could be.
1)Have got a boost gadge on and the pressure runs at .9 bar but at around 5500rpm the boost drops back to 0.6 bar it pulls really good and the seems to flaten off.
2) there\'s a fair emought of play in the steering now to the point that it feels a bit scary around faster corners if the road is a bit bumpy, you have to hang on to the wheel as its a bit random. Is it a worn bush or tire rod ends or all of the above?
Appreciate any help
Cheers
What engine mods are you running regarding boost?
As for the steering. I\'m not sure, have you had a propper look under the car? And are the tyre pressures correct etc
The boost does drop off at higher revs. I wouldn\'t worry about that too much.Saying that I don\'t think mine drops that much @ 5500rpm.
If the steering is as bad as that just get under the car and have a poke around. Or get someone too for you before you order any bushes etc. But I would think its a good idea to replace worn bushes if you can afford to.
I want to upgrade the bushes and sway bars etc when I have time so was wondering if the problem with the steering was down to a part that always wares out.
In regards to boost the car has an after market intake, standard down pipe with hollowed out cat and aftermarket cat back system fujitsurbo with the standard ECU the boost would reach 0.6 bar with the RE-A ECU the boost reaches 0.9 bar then drops straight back to 0.6 at about 5500 rpm where the power seams to level off, the car is still pulling well after 5500 just seams to level off.
Is there some sort of safey thing that drops the boost or is it just the point where the standard turbo starts to run out of puff.
Is your car a jap import? the reason i ask this is that most of the FCs that have been used for racing or drifting in japan have worn joints on the steering column. I had to change part of the steering column on my import and the car only has 50k miles on it!! (around £200 new!!)
i will post up pics this evening to show you the points to look at
it could also be bushes, ball joints or track rod ends
on turbo side of things - just off the top of my head, it could be that you actuator spring has become weak and just cannot keep your wastegate closed at higher revs therefore allowing exhaust pressure to release and therefor boost to drop
Ross
yea the car is a JDM so that could be a posibility its done 60000 miles which isint that much.
As for the boost you could be right if the spring is weak it would just let go as soon as it got any pressure on the diaphram, so insted of opening the waste gate a bit to control boost the exhust pressure would pop the waste gate compleatly open and cause the boost to drop off
if you have a big bore system on you FC your best bet is to by a tubular manifold and an fit an external wastegate. they tend to contol boost alot better (avoiding the fatal boost spiking) compared to standard wastegate, even more so when couplied with a electronic boost controller.
ok found a pic of my old and new steering column shaft (bit from bulkhead to rack - beside your turbo)
the bit marked by the red arrow is where the play was in mine. I noticed the difference in movement between part "A" & "B" it was only a mil or so, but that translated to a couple of inches at the wheel!!!! you will probably need to get someone to turn the wheel back and forth gently within the slack so as you can look at the column
also check the UJs at the points marked "1" and "2"
