Title: un-welding 2pc wheel to change offset?
Post by: L18M on June 22, 2010, 07:32:09 PM
Just wondering on this one and have tried to goole and see what pops up but not found anything useful.

I have a set of Advan SA3R, they are a 2pc wheel where the centre is welded to the rim.

Would it be possible to un-weld(?) or cut the weld out so that the centre can be moved to decrease the offset?

I saw on \'american hotrod\' they custom make the centre and fit it into the rim and weld it in. I cant remember if they heated up the rim to expand the rim so the centre fits tightly then let cool and weld.

any help, advice or contacts for a place that can do this would be awesome. thanks :)

GASP!dont cut em up liam lol....would it be possible or easier to machine the face that bolts to the car to decrease the offset?

Basically, no. It\'s a substantial engineering exercise. You\'ll probably also find that ther \'halves\' are not the centre and outer, but the \'front\' and \'rear\' sections. To have it down properly would probably cost a similar amount to getting a completely new wheel made by someone like Image.

You can look at machining down the rear face, but I personally wouldn\'t even consider it, as there\'s a substantial amount of force on that face.

It\'s also a crime to actually decrease the offset of a wheel. The usual resolution to a problem like this is to man up, grow some balls, and make the car fit the wheels.

rusty: hows you doing? keeping well? not cut them, just modify them. i\'ve sanded them down a bit and primed them. just need to snad down the primer again and colour spray. though not sure what colour to spray them. was going to go for satin black centre with red lip but now maybe all satin black. still undecided.
if i machine it then wouldnt it change from +38 to +40 or more?
im after more dish :)

sih: the car fits the wheels, just i seen some low offset sa3r with more lip and the centre was recessed more into the rim than flush with the rim.
i\'m pretty sure they centre and rim by looking at how they match together and are welded.

oh well. worth a thought. :) although its invalid.

Aaaaah right, my bad - sorry, thought you wanted to give them a weaker offset - in that cash, ignore the balls growing comments, my apologies!

Only real way is to sell them with someone who wants mediocre fitment - unfortuantely splitting and rewedling, if even possible, will cost much monies. It\'d be cheaper just to sell them on and get another set. Keep an eye on the GTR boards - they come up reasonably regularly on there, and they\'ll be decent offsets too - expect to find sets of 9j +20s or similar for circa £350  :)

Liam,i,m doing ok thankyou, pleased to hear your making progress with the wheels even if i did think you wanted to cut them up lol,the contrast between the black and red may make the dish stand out more and apear deeper?
