Title: Ignition upgrades
Post by: damehyndman on June 15, 2010, 01:05:00 PM
I need a bit of advice really. I have a heavily modified FD these days and I think my stock HT leads are at the end of their useful life. So it seems like a good opportunity to uprate the ignition system. I have been told avoid Magnecor HT leads as they do fit as well onto the spark plugs as Mazda OEM. Anyone running uprated Magnecor leads and are they any good?

Secondly, I have been advised to get hold of a HKS twin power. Now having searched various forums both FD and non, they seem to have a mixed reviews. Some think they are a gimmick and don\'t do much at all and MSD is the way forward, others are very complimentary about the twin power. Again any real world tales for and against?

Lastly on a related note would a Supra fuel pump be a good move?

Thanks,
Dame

I run and have been running Magnecore KV8.5 with no problems whats so ever, I have heard that people find them difficult to fit on the coil packs but in my experience they are fine.

With regards to your ignition setup, you can go for a twin power and many have as the cost of getting replacement coils was ridiculous , but to be honest its much better to replace the coils as they are old and are subjected to alot of heat.

I believe you can get hold of brand new leading coils for the same price as the twin spark around the 250 mark and will be good upto 450+bhp  as proved by reworx on their drag car.

Having spoken to some of the best tuners in the UK the general impression was that the HKS twin spark was a band-aid instead of sorting the real problem of the coils being old and worn out. Now that the cost of the new leading coil has reduced its well worth doing.

Thanks for this. Is it not worth replacing the trailing coil at the same time? Presumably this a Mazda dealer order or can I  purchase elsewhere?

The HKS advice came from one the top RX7 tuners! So good to get an alternative view.

Direct from Mazda the leading coil will cost you around the 900 mark :xconfused so best not advised to go that way. Best bet would be to contact reworx as I know they have them in stock, however other specialists might have them too.

The twin spark, changes the characteristics of the spark however does not deal with the actual problem of the coil pack breaking down. I had major ignition break up after 4k rpm so did what most did and bought a twin spark, £270 lighter it was no better as the coil could not take the extra power being put throught it, rememeber unless someone has changed them, the coils are the orignials and are 15+ years old plus sitting ontop of the engine is going to play a detrimental part in their lifespan. In the end I bought a new leading coil pack and now run 364bhp at the fly with NO twin spark and good ingition readings.

The trailing coils are not so heavily abused as the leading, so its normally where problems arise, for piece of mind you could replace with later spec units.

Most tuners until recently would highly recommend the twinspark due to the rediculous price mazda were charging £900 if I remember correctly, but now they are availible for around the 250 mark it seems silly not to replace them as in new condition they are able to take on much higher BHP levels.

depends how much money you want to spend really... i\'d go for an MSD set up on the leading and just leave the trailing as is. the Twin Power is supposed to be capacitive discharge, just like MSD units, but i\'d be tempted to go for MSD and have an ignition + uprated coils. it\'d be more cost effective than a Twin Power and all new Mazda OEM coils.

Just curious, how much to MSD units and coils cost??

Looking at what I paid, £250 for Brand new leading coil good for 450+bhp and a twin spark (however not used) £275 = £525

Which MSD would you recommend as I couldn\'t find one specifically for an FD?

Sorry missed this bit, uprated coils? is this all part of the MSD?

eBay for MSD 6 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MSD-6A-Starter-Ignition-Kit-PN-6200-/120543809622?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c10f89056)

that\'s the entry level for an MSD CDI system which should be more than capable. that seller is the official UK distributor for MSD as well, even though it looks a bit dodgy them being based in Greece. blaster coils are £50 each so that\'s £300 for a completely new leading system. the problem is if you wanted to upgrade the trailing ignition you\'d need to buy one of the more expensive multi-channel boxes or an extra 2 boxes, can\'t see why you\'d want to though.

you can buy aftermarket coils from MSD at a fraction of the cost of new OE ones, they\'d probably work with the stock ignition too but it makes more sense to put a CDI unit in as well.

Brilliant! Is the MSD 6 reasonably simple to fit? Are the blaster coils a straight bolt on replacement for the leading coil pack or is there a bit of rotary witchcraft involved?

Thanks for this all advice :wiggle

i have msd 6T, not fitted yet and its quite a large unit i cant seem to find anywhere good to put it. I may fit it behind the dash where the AC used to be or make a shelf above the turbo/downpipe. the twin power unit is about 1/6th the size so its something to consider.

also i have been told not to get the blaster coils even though they are liek 50 quid as the standard coils are fine. i might just get them anyway as they are quite cheap.

fitting the msd doesnt look too hard.

MSD doesn\'t look too hard to fit; you just give the box a 12v feed and earth, run a +/- to the coils and take the ECU signal before the igniter. I\'m pretty sure the wire you take is a light green one, 1H on the diagram (i\'ve not installed one of these yet mind, this is going from the .... loads of reading i did when deciding what to do ignition wise).

Why were you advised not to go for blaster coils?

because the standard coils can take 900bhp :3gears-lh"or something" so it wasnt needed lol.

I might read a little more then decide to stay or go with the blasters on leading.

Fair point, but if I need to replace the coils, blasters would be a hell of a lot cheaper :Giggle Are the blasters a straight swap for the existing coil pack?

Hi Dame it may help to know that in 8 years of selling Magnecor leads we have only had one complaint about a split boot on a set that was around 5 or 6 years old,

We have worked with Magnecor over the last year or so to make the ends even better on the product and currantly average selling 8 to 10 sets a week and have done for a long time,

We now even have some Mazda dealers buying Magnecor on a regular basis as the stock leads let water up the ends and Magnecor leads won\'t.

Hope this helps

The supra pump would be ok.  Why not go with a Cosmo pump.

alot of us in the states used to use the MSD 6A we used 2 boxes for leading and one for trailing. but they burn up pretty quick

if you going to think about going with msd look into the CRANE CAMS HI-6  setup.
there alot stronger and can deal with heat and vibration alot better. but there also as big as the msd units. and hav went out of buis. so if you can get a new setup from them if anything happens were on are own.

new ignition to go with now is the ARC-2 from Dynatek, these units dont heat up so much, there small so you can mount them anywere, duel channel so one cdi will run both leadings. cheaper then building any other setup. and if you ever want to think about AI injection youll always have enouph arc so you wont have to upgrade anything..

the msd is good but its older tech. and they do burn out.
just some food for thought
