Correct me if i\'m wrong, but I heard that a police force in the Essex area used to have an FD as a police car?

It even manages to look cool as a cop car.
Not many cars I can say that about.

Guess they\'re chasing small criminals in that one.... have you seen the back seats??? ;)

Curious.  what are the lumps of metal on the bonnet for?

If you look closely you can see that they are supporting a perspex screen but gawd knows what that\'s for, lol

The Japanese Police BNR34\'s are used in the high speed Wangan chases, which usually erupt up to speeds of 330KM/H. The horizontal glass pillar seen on the bonnet acts as a wind deflector, and shoots the wind over the sirens to prevent them from flying off. You\'ll only see these on the GT-R\'s and theres about 6 of these highly modified ones on the prowl in Wangan and around the Tokyo Bay, the GTT\'s are patrol cars and aren\'t involved in the chases, hence no wind deflector.

Sure if you were Nagata-san you might get away but they generally catch most of the high speeders and issue them with mere 18,000 yen tickets. ($200).

small wonder they have a slight speeding issue over there! $200 is a laughable amount! anyone who can afford to own and run a 200+ mph car isn\'t really going to miss $200 methinks! ;)

but what a job! chasing speeders in cars like that. reminds me of a game i used to play called Tokyo Highway Battle.

They lose points too.

For 200 mph, probably all of the points you have (all 6 of them). You lose points for being in an accident here even if it is not your fault. Ask my wife, she lost 3 points plus her gold \'no accident\' license. Effectively doubled her insurance premium. And she has some POS try to kill her in a truck...

I\'m not sure on all the rules and regs over here, but if you happen to actually lose your license, and wish to re-aquire it, trust me, the fine is more than enough.

It costs about ¥300,000 to get your license the first time, plus several hours (like 20 or so @ ¥2-4,000 an hour) plus education plus "the stigma". So it would not be cheap to lose your license, plus the stigma can have an effect on a very Japanese person. That\'s all I can say as I am not 100% sure on all the ins and outs.

Anyway, who cares? Most cop cars are try-hard taxi\'s or Suzuki things. Occasionally you might see a Skyline around here, but they only have a few here so you don\'t see them very often.

But the cops on bikes are something to fear. They all look as mean as poison and not without reason... ;)

And I have yet to actually get my license here. :D

I see! sounds a little harsh, especially if you can lose such a large portion of your points for someone else\'s boob!

looking at it from that perspective, you\'re probably right. i can imagine the \'stigma\' might well have an effect on a \'very japanese person\', as you eloquently put it! :)

sounds hideously expensive to get a license there. good luck with that!

But there\'s a trick.

If you are Japanese, you have to jump through all kinds of hoops and pay all kind of cash.

I just walk in with my Aussie license, my international license, passport and gaijin card, do a quick test, pay about $50 and walk out with a nice shiny license. Nice huh?

If you happen to be American however, I think they make you run through more hoops than that. England, Canada and NZ get the nice deal AFAIK.

As for the points thing, don\'t get me started. The whole thing was a complete disaster from start to finish, as they usually are here. But because she is a nice, quiet submissive (I\'m working on that!) young lady, they basically gave her the rough end of the pineapple.

I wish I was driving. They really would not know what hit them. After being in a couple (Shhh!!!) crashes, I always carry a camera and say NOTHING that might even hint I had anything to do with it. Also make sure that if they are injured in any way, I am incapable of walking.  Insert expletetives about Japan here if desired, which I do! !@$@#$%*&(*^(*&$%$##$@#!!!!!

So many screwed up things around here, it\'s not all just pretty girls and cheap, fast cars. :(

But it sure beats the crap outta actually working for a living! :p

that sounds pretty good to me. but what\'s a gaijin card? what side of the road do people drive on in oz/nz? i was thinking perhaps one reason why it\'s tough for the US guys is because the drive on the opposite side of the road?

there\'s nothing worse than roguish guys taking advantage of demure and slightly submissive people. the camera and walking problems are definitely a smart move! i\'m sure your experience will rub off on her sooner or later!:)

always fancied japan, both culturally and socially. but now i\'m not so sure! but yeah, definitely lots of v pretty girls and cheap(ish) fast cars! but...if you don\'t mind me asking....what is it you do there if you\'re not working for a living? :p
