Title: Pops and bangs?
Post by: Big Al on June 01, 2010, 11:42:12 PM
Hi, recently installed a lovely dual tip Racing Beat cat back system. Thing is the car now backfires occaisionaly and pops and bangs as well. It didn\'t do this before.
This happens during over run mostly and is more promenent when the engine is cold,  I appreciate it gets more fuel when cold. I guess the question is... is this normal ???

I made this exact same thread when i got my car and less than a week later i lost a rotor tip. The water temp sensor had failed and it was over fueling one minuet and under fueling the next. It\'s probably not that or anything wrong but i would check it out.

mine did pop and bang when I first got it even more when the cat got removed. But when I got the PFC and had it mapped its very rare it does it now. But I do miss the pops lol.

It\'s nothing to worry about :) Mine does it occasionally, usually when taking my foot off the fast pedal and putting it back, good for scaring people ;)

Sheesh, another blue \'99 car with Racing Beat duals... what do I have to do to be unique?  Oh wait, staying stock would seem to do the trick ;)

Popping and banging is all part of the fun... mine does it, although I do have a "sports" cat, which appears to be quite free flowing, and helps the sound of the RB Duals along nicely :cheers

Thanks Dan, :cheers

perhaps we should start a thread for 99 Innocent Blue cars, with RB dual exhausts ??

Seriously though, I have been very involved previously with hot rods and drag cars..... I still have an unfinished 1954 Devon pickup in my garage with a 355 Chevy small block running twin Holleys on a rare 471 blower.

Point being I do not have a clue about rotary engines. I\'m learning fast though and find the help on here invaluable. My previous experience tells me a backfiring engine has a timing issue....... hence the question.

So now I\'m more than happy to \'bang\'  around knowing all is ok.

Thanks again, Al

PS the rotor beats V8\'s hands down in my humble opinion :yes

Lol I learnt to control the pops by sharply jabbing the throttle a little and it popped every time :D

Heh, no, you\'re not thinking big enough, we need a *whole* forum to ourselves :Giggle

You know, I quite like the sound of a nice V8, the way some TVRs sounds sends a shiver down my spine :) Don\'t get me wrong, I love how my 7 goes and sounds, and would never put a V8 in it, maybe I need a V8 monster too... although I doubt I\'d get that past the financial controller ;)
Having two "silly" cars is just about on the limit!

Dan.

PS I was followed out of work the other day by my boss in his air-conditioned double-glazed living room on wheels (his description, not mine!), and he "mentioned" to me that even when I was 300-400m ahead of him when I lifted off after a bit of WOT he could he "loud bangs". :wiggle
