Title: Apexi Power FC on stock car
Post by: Pantera Chris on May 30, 2010, 10:36:37 PM
Hi guys,

Im having to put my 92 FD3s back to standardish because it wasnt running  right when it was sold to me (about 14-15psi spikes) and is now in the  process of being rebuilt :(

The spec was:

- Apexi Power FC
- Straight through exhaust and decat (not front pipe)
- Twin HKS mushroom filters

Im putting the stock exhaust back on and my question is will the car run  ok with the Apexi ECU in stock form? I have a FC commander to plug in  to it. Do I need to reset the ECU back to default? How do I do this if  so?

Also should I put the stock airbox back in to replace the HKS mushrooms?

Thanks,
Chris

the problem is, are you assuming that the boost spikes are because of the exhaust and decat? Just wondering as on mine im running hks filters, decat and exhaust and only spike around 11-12 psi....im on the power fc basemap and dont seem to have any problems.

plug your commander in, go to \'etc\' and do the initialize, that will put you back to basemap and its a pretty safe map, ive had it up to 0.9bar with low knock figures.....im not in anyway suggest you run around on that sort of boost though.

But i wouldnt take all your performance stuff off straight away, check over the engine for any spilt pipes to the actuators etc

if you went back to stock everything you would just find you would run richer

Running a straight-through exhaust with no upgraded boost control will almost always cause boost spikes. You could, since you\'re funding an entire rebuild anyway, try to find an extra couple of hundred for a decent aftermarket boost controller that should prevent the problem happening again

I was assuming the straight through exhaust had raised the boost, yes. The backbox is huge - must be at least a 3" exit with a 5" tailpipe.

Thanks for the advice on the ECU. Will reset it to stock just to be sure.

Have been considering a boost controller but im going to leave it stock for a while and work on the exterior first. My rebuilder offers a 1 year warranty with his rebuilds as long as its running fairly stock.

You can run a 3in bore aftermarket exhaust backbox on stock ecu as long as you have the cat. You can also run filters on it.

I personally wouldnt change any of the original spec you bought it with, just pop it down to pips or any other rotary tuner and get them to map it properly and explain your issues.

You will come away happier than if you turned it back to stock unless that was your intentions anyway but if its just to get it running right then the pfc is more than capable for a straight through exhaust and a pair of hks pods
