Before anyone get excited, im speaking about inter-coolers!:p
As some of you might of seen, im half way through my rebuild. And Im trying find out what the best set up would be best for my needs. So I hope you guys can give me a hand. I asked on a general car forum and there was a bit of a bust up between two guys over there capabilities in building a car!
So, I going non-sequential and I will standard twins. The car will be uses to get to and from work and a wee bit of fun at the weekends:burnout
I read that I will be increasing the amount of lag by going non-sequential and if I get too big of an inter-cooler it will add to that lag. So Im wanting a set up that\'s not going to be unbearable, if you guys know what I mean.
So what do you think the best set up is, v-mount, fmic or smic? and what size of cooler?
Cheers McC
helps if we know your setup :)
tub, size exhaust etc...
from what i\'ve seen v-mount is the shortest pipework.
front mount will restrict the rad cooling ability a bit.
ah sorry, wasn\'t clear on my set up.
4.5" exit 3" tubing for the exhaust
standard twins
apexi filters
not sure if I will be running the air pump or not yet.
I read that v-mount could suffer heat soak if you got stuck in traffic after a blast, is this true? or is it just the case of stick a couple of fans in to sort this?
No, you can get a cheap and nasty ebay core that is MASSIVE and will have the same cooling performance than my small top mounted PACE cored ARC copy, its all about the core :) and the air flow, if you are running a V mount you would have a different bonnet anyhow.
is the car gonna do track work, drag work or just used on the street?
I\'ve got a V mount in mine, and to be honest it\'s one of the bigest coolers I have seen in a V-mount setup on the street! I\'m on stock twins & to be honest I haven\'t noticed any difference in boosting times (although I have done alot of work on the pipes from the tubs to cooler!) inlet temps are anything from 13 - 27c hottest I have seen on a summers day is 28c.
to be honest for general use I see no other option as this way doesn\'t obstruct any rad cooling eather!
jono
@Jono what kind of work have you done? Have you just made them as short as possible? And have you changed your bonnet for the air to escape?
@m1tch, can you suggest a decent seller?
alot of people use ebay greddy fmic kits and turn them into vmount kits, seems to fit quite well and comes with some pipework, cheap to, though most sellers are waiting for them to come back into stock as it looks like the usual ebay bits come on a big shipment and loads of companies grab a bundle of them.
Wait till they come back into stock for everyone(around 4weeks) and you should be able to get a good deal
I not looking on spending huge amount of money, how ever did a quick google search and.....is it just me or are these really cheap, what\'s the catch? Would these work the as you suggesting turbotoaster?

thats not cheap mate, the ebay versions are identical to them but around £200-£220 and from companies in the uk
Thats what most people run as they are more than capable of holding the power, a few have been used up to 600bhp so you dont need any others
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-RX7-FD3S-1992-95-FMIC-Front-Mount-Intercooler-Kit-/360262014482?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item53e14a1612
this is the one that you want.......now that price is daft because the rest of the ebay businesses are out of stock on this as they are all getting a delivery in 4-6weeks time.
If your patient they will all pop back up on ebay then and be around £200, thats the best advise i can give you.
You can get a universal cooler if you want, do you want fmic or vmic setup?
if your really desperate and dont want to wait, see if these guys have them in stock
http://www.jperformance.co.uk/autobahn88-mazda-rx7-fd3s-front-mount-intercooler-fmic-kit-p-139.html
personally id wait though as you will be £90 better off waiting
yeah did notice that and saw the price tag.
Yeah I was looking at the mishimoto universal ones on j-w-racing.
Reading the responses so far, v-mount seems the best set up for my needs.
hopefully im going to be getting the engine back in that time scale so iv got a wee bit of time.

This is what i have, ive had no problem with heat soak. WGT/Radtec product
Okay how easy is it to turn a fmic into a v-mount?
And can you change the orientation of the OEM radiator to complete the v-mount set up?
yeh dead easy.
Just doing a bit of research for you as alot of people using that intercooler i showed you, use it as a vmount
(http://www.rx7club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=347774&d=1244823533)
thats one way of doing it, but i would have the pipes pointing at the engine instead i think to keep the pipework simpler
ill see what others i can find using that kit.
failing that if your prepared to get someone local to do a bit of modifying of a cooler then that opens up a bit range of ideas
thanks for helping me out dude, someone give this man a coconut!
you image link is unauthorized, so i cant see. but i will go have a hut to,i forgot i registered with them.

does that work any better?
ive been thinking long and hard about a v mount setup myself the last couple of days.
i have 3 options.
1. fit my intercooler into the bumper area
good points, low intake temps, dont have to worry about heat soak
bad points, alot of cutting, long intercooler pipes and if i do track days the water temps might struggle.
2. fit my intercooler upright in my engine bay
good points, short pipework, use ducting to force air through intercooler instead of spilling out over the sides, easy to do and keeps it stealthy
bad points, not sure if my rad will be that close to my water pipe that ill struggle to fit my single turbo in, will heat soak like mad if its sat still, space in the engine bay will be tight for fitting my water injection tank.
3 fitting it in a v mount setup
good points, i should be able to maintain the similar sort of water temps as i currently do, intercooler setup will be very easy to fit.
bad points, intercooler doesnt get all the possible air so wont get the same sort of inlet temps as a fmic, will heatsoak if left standing. the rad will take alot of messing about with water pipes, still means im taking up most of the spare engine bay, intercooler will struggle to get rid of the hot air behind it without a vented bonnet
you can make anything fit to do the job matey... you just need to have skills or know someone with them ;) I had my IC end tanks modded to get the inlet & outlet in the place I needed them, all the stainless work I did myself, but it was alot of time & effort! I\'m running a stock rad in my setup & I have difficulties in getting the temps up to 80c!
anyway, here is a pic of my setup:

Jono
looks a good setup.
jono since your here do you have any pics of how you routed your water pipes on your rad, trying to find anyone with pics or even a quick drawing is like trying to get blood from a stone
yep.....
made my water pipes out of stainless:

woohoo..........jono you legend!!!.......im giving you the coconut that McC gave me, enjoy the bounty goodness
ah I see what your saying. Im going to have a think about it, will have a chat with the guy thats building my engine tomorrow hopefully. See what he thinks and let you know.
mmmmm coconut :p yummy :)
seriously, Vmount is the best solution for IC positioning! you don\'t have to have a vented bonnet, I\'m running bonnet lifters & they work well, although I am going to be going vented to get the best out the system! the other way to prevent heat soak is to put a deviding pannel in the mouth opening to create 2 seperate air channels.... one for the rad & one for the IC, then if you get stick in traffic, just hit the AC button and the fans kick in keeping your water temps down & drawing the heat away from your IC!
Jono
i think all depends what the car is going to be aimed out.
if it was pure drag then fmic works every day of the week.
if its track work then v mount is best because both are getting a portion of the air
if its street use them either really can be chosen, just depends on what level of fabrication your prepared to do

havnt managed to speak to my rebuilder yet.
But i going to be running non-sequential standard twins, fast road use:), as little fabrication as possible, I don\'t have Jono skills.
i would say fmic is gonna be your easiest way, the cheap ebay kits that will pop up in about a month come will all the piping, silicone hoses, brackets and metal water pipes so its best just getting one of them.
Then get yourself a thick ally rad, they are £100 on ebay but the company who sells them often puts them up for auction so you can normally get them even cheaper.
id expect to get a fmic kit including rad for £300 brand new
cool cheers for the help dude!
