Title: Newbie queries
Post by: s2thoudriver on May 18, 2010, 10:35:47 AM
Hi All

First off, great site! It\'s nice to know there\'s a group of people out there who have gone rotary!

Anyway..after having various EVO\'s as weekend toys, i have decided to try something new, hence me being here.

So, i have secured a 1992 G3 type r (i think), with 46k genuine miles on it, 1 jap owner, 0 uk, no majopr mods apark from bolt on HKS bits. The issue is, i had to take a bit of a gamble on it as it was over 500 miles away and i couldn\'t get the time to go and see it.

I know i know, golden rule, never buy a car blind etc etc, but i don\'t mind if it needs tinckering with as it is a weekend hobby.

When it arrives (being delivered in the next 2 weeks), i would like to get it compresison checked to see if i have been lucky and got a healthy one, or have bought a lemon and need a re-build!

My query is, how much does a compression test cost? I pressume WGT can do these? (i am based in South Manchester)

looking forward to learning about all things rotary! Any other advise/suggestions/things to check upon it\'s arrival, are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

You bought an rx7 blind? Sorry but that\'s the worst thing you could do. There are so many potential things to be wrong not just the engine.
To give you an idea: engine compression, water seals, rats nest, worn gearbox, worn interior, worn pillowballs and that\'s before you mention the bodywork.

Hi

I know, it is breaking the golden rule, but i want a project so i am not too concerned if it needs lots of work and i got it for a fairly decent price anyway.

I have been assured there is no rust, minor scratches and all engine/gearbox/clutch are fine. Also assured it\'s not blowing any smoke or loosing any coolant, so we\'ll see

I\'ll take some pictures when it arrives.

So, does anyone know the general price i should be looking at paying for a compression test so i can start budgetting?

What i might do is just drop it off at WGT and get them to do a full check of the car to identify anything that requires work. Anyone else had a \'health check\' type work done? Any rough price guidelines are appreciated

Thanks

Rob

Oh dear.... unfortunatly he is right.....

There are a lot of shyte out there and alot more are being imported like that off the boat. Big big gamble.
Also a compression test is not the holy grail with these cars and would not really prove what you think.

 Good Luck!

Probably a good idea, if you leave it with WGT they\'ll be able to let you know what\'s, what.  There are very, very few garage I trust to leave my cars with, and WGT have always been excellent for me.

Sounds like a plan. I will be taking it to WGT, i just thought i\'d ask people what the general prices are to prepare myself, but no-one seems to know that.

^^this

Had one done just before xmas, Pip rebuilt the engine so always take her over to WGT. Mine was closer to £60, but I did get coolant changed as well.

IMO ur asking for ur pants to be pulled down ....u might as well write a blank cheque to wgt. u go into any specialist asking to have a "check over" and ur asking for it

A rather cynical opinion there.  Without getting into a which tuner to go to argument, I\'ve never had an issue with WGT, everything has been done, at least,to my satisfaction.  They have always gone above and beyond for me.  You can check out the various company reviews (http://www.fduk.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=35) on FDUK for example, WGT is overwhelmingly recommended.

i didnt mean it as a dig at wgt sorry if it came across like that - im sure hes a dcent bloke...i just mean its not really a great practice as far as motor trade mechanics and specilaists go

Thanks for the comments guys.

My plan is to spend a day or 2 having a good check over everything i can on the engine, gearbox, suspension (wear on bushes etc), pipework etc then take it to WGT for an engine compression test and health check.

If it needs a re-build, it needs a re-build. From what i can see, they all need one at some point, so i have included this contingency into my overall spending. Besides, it would give me the chance to have it streetported (??) and built to last :o

You\'ll have to excuse my lack of knowledge on rotary engines, the only cars i have worked on and modified over the last 5 years are Mitsubishi EVO\'s. This RX7 is more of a project, to learn about a different car. I\'m picking things up already though.

He just brought the car dont scare the .... out of him. Yes these cars are expensive and yes there are loads of problems that can arrise but just giving a advance warning to be wary that costs can build up is enough of a warning. he might have brought it really cheap or brought expecting a rebuild. I brought mine blind with only crappy cellphone pics, paid whole amount with no reciept, the guy was in tyne and wear and i live in london, car wasnt registered in my name for a month, when car was delivered i couldnt fit in drivers seat so had my mum drive it to my house and still after paying 10,000 in parts on top of the 5000 for car i am still very happy.

Yeah, welcome to the club and don\'t let the scaremongers put you off :D. My first FD was like a grenade with the pin out with the mods it had, and I knew less about rotaries than I do the dark side of the moon when I bought it but it survived a year and a half of my hamfisted abuse before it went wrong (and then only cos I crashed it lol :o). Just cos it\'s an unkown quantity doesn\'t mean it\'s about to explode at any minute :Nono!

i don\'t think there are many FDs in the UK with sub-50k chassis miles, especially the earlier cars. don\'t let people scare you, even if it needs an engine refresh you\'ve found yourself an awesome low-mileage car :)

Post by: s2thoudriver on May 19, 2010, 02:58:49 PM
Thanks for the replies guys. I\'m not scared about it, more interseted in what is going to turn up.

I didn\'t pay top dollar for it, so i have some money to play with, all i do know is that he chassis mileage is geniune and there is no rust underneath (going to be undersealed asap!). It hasn\'t been heavily modified so don\'t expect it to be a ticking bomb and every modded part on it is one brand (HKS).

One thing i am relieved to hear is that the fuel pumps are good for about 350bhp. A known issue with EVOs is that people turn up the boost, fit an induction and de-cat but don\'t uprate the fuel pump.

I\'m sure all will be revealed and confirmed in the next few weeks......
Title: Newbie queries
Post by: neil_jdmr on May 19, 2010, 05:36:20 PM
I am on standard fuel system still Pump/injectors/fpr etc and making 326bhp at 0.9bar and that is pretty much maxxing out the injectors.

Was running 90-96% injector duty but been on a new fuel filter the last 2000 miles and the highest ive seen is 92.9% at 0.92bar although it is now usually sub 90%.

For any further power or even if i fitted a larger ic i would deffo need to upgrade the fuel pump and fpr at the minimum i expect.
Title: Newbie queries
Post by: Nik da Greek on May 20, 2010, 01:44:38 AM
As above, mine ran to near 340 bhp with stock fueling except for upgraded to 850 injectors all round cos like Neil the duty cycle was maxing out otherwise. Much more and as already said, it would definitely have wanted uprated pump and FPR

ok, i think first on the list of money throws to WGT will be a big service, including fuel filter, then compression check, then wait for the  "well, i have identified that the following things need work..."

Yep, that\'s the general idea. I have another car for my daily driver so it\'s more of a weekend toy/project.

I\'ve done EVOs to death now and without going down the whole stroker/forged route, there was little else for me to play with.

Oh don\'t worry, i\'m a sucker for modifying, i just can\'t help it

I\'ve already started looking at single turbo convertions, uprated intercoolers, new tyres, Apexi FC etc etc but realise i am getting ahead of myself!! I\'ll see what essentials need spending first, then start modding it.

educate first, then spend!

Should be arriving next week, probably Wednesday, so i\'ll be able to have a better idea then.

In the meantime, please feel free to advise on mods that i will need to do to have it runing at a reliable (?!?) 340ish bhp. I\'m pressuming a de-cat (if not already done), Apexi FC and remap would be first?

Mods so far are HKS hard pipes, HKS exhaust, HKS filters, HKS coilovers (probably rock hard if experience is anything to go by!)

Thanks

Rob
Title: It\'s arrived!!
Post by: s2thoudriver on June 02, 2010, 08:46:29 AM
...Finally :driving

Ok, i\'ve only had 15 minutes to look at it before i left for work, but first impressions are that it\'s pretty good.

There\'s no sign of accident damage anywhere, all the panels are perfectly aligned, it doesn\'t throw out any smoke of any colour. It has the original handbook, the passenger side flare and even has a lovely Mazdaspeed steering wheel.

It needs a damn good clean though, it\'s filthy!!

Only things of concern are that the doors seem hard to unlock (could just need oil?) and the guy let it run out of petrol. That and the front left arch has a tiny bit of rust on the lip which will need treating.

Looking forward to getting home later for a good look around it and having a good drive of it!

In the meantime, does anyone know the best place to get accurate touch up paint from? (think it\'s called Montego blue)

I\'ll also be starting shopping soon and i think first on the list will be an Apexi FC as everyone on here seems to have them. If anyone has one for sale, please let me know.

Any other initial modification recomendations are more than welcome. It has a HKS exhaust, HKS filters, HKS hardpipe kit and HKS coilovers but that\'s it as far as i can see.

Thanks

Rob

p.s i will take some pictures and get them up. I intend to do some before and after ones for when i spend a full day valeting it (it needs it!)

Get a 3" decat pipe, a pfc and some quality mapping and its hey presto.

I personally, have spent anything else on regular servicing.

Good times, glad she seems sound!

A PFC would be a good move, especially if the exhaust is de-cetted. With filters on as well you really wanna get it mapped to suit as a priority. Try a gallooon of penetrating oil on the door lock/handles but if that doesn\'t work I\'d suggest getting into the mechanisms and strip, clean and lube, they\'re a notorious weak point for breaking/snapping keys and that\'d be bad. Unless you\'re any good at breaking in lol.

You can get touch-up paint for Montego Blue, but it\'s sh!te :(. I had a tube of it from a Mazda dealer for my old car, and it was nowhere near

Thanks for the tips.

I managed to finally get in/out of the car. It seems to be the lock swithces in the door cards not moving enough to open. When you put pressure on them, it finally unlocks.

So, put half a can of lube on the locks, handles in the door cards and it is ok for now, but still needs some persuation. When i get more time at the weekend i\'ll strip the doors down and re-lube everything inside too. At least it\'s not broken!

Only other thing i noticed wad that in the engine bay, there are 2 metal pipes that the HKS filters are attached to. About 10" up from the filers, there is a smaller pipe that joins it, using an L shaped metal plug. On one of the metal intake pipes, the pipe is connected, wherease on the second one, there is just a hole and a pipe, almost like the L shaped metal plug is missing.

I pressume something has been fitted in between this and removed? Can anyone advise what i need to replace it with, or whether i just need to buy the L shaped metal part to connect the rubber pipe to the metal intake pipe?

Also noticed there is no BOV (probably also removed) as there is a long rubber pipe coming from near the inlet all the way to the front of the car, with nothing attached. When revving, it blows air out. Am i correct?

Any advise welcome.

Thanks

Rob

Welcome aboard mate, It sound like a nice straight 7 when I got mine I broke all the rules didn\'t get a compression check or anything just fell in love with it as soon as I seen it. Drove it back from country durham then about a week later called in to WGT to check them out after reading info on here and FDUK about Pip. After dropping it off thinking he was going to give bad news check the compression and then the whole car over, After then called me after about 2 hrs with quite a long list brakes, suspension, exhaust compression fine and then did a full service.

I have used WGT loads of time even when the twins was not boosting right and both time he sorted it first was a broken wire in the loom second a vac pipe popped off, He could have so easy said the turbo\'s are shot and need replacing and would have never been non the wiser.

As for the FD yes they do cost a lot of money but the rewards you get from driving when its all working you will never stop smiling. :)

Enjoy the Rotary Fun.

Don\'t suppose anyone is located in South Manchester? Sale/Altrincham area?

If you are, i wouldn\'t mind someone having a quick check over the engine bay to make sure everything looks to be where it should be and maybe advise on what things i need to be buying?

I would drive to any local area but the car is not registered yet so it has no plates, MOT or docs!

Thanks
