Hi All,
Hope someone can help with a couple of quick questions re. an \'88 Convertible please; Gears difficult to select (especially when cold), oil levels ok but dirty (car not been used much) maybe needs changing? Someone mentioned a liquid additive that sometimes helps with smoother gear changes?
Also when reversing (especially on full lock) horrible grinding sound on the rear drivers side, maybe calipers/brakes sticking?
Cheers,
Mark
88 cab - sounds like its an auto then ??
can you confirm the gearbox type please :D
and reversing on full lock shouldnt really make a noise at the rear , if its the brakes etc.. then i would have thought it would have done it all the time ?
might be worth checking your DTSS bushes , calipers , pads , discs etc.. - just to rule stuff out
Hi Stu,
Thanks for your message. It is a manual gearbox but does take a while for the gears to become easier, for some reason (1st and 2nd especially).
I\'ve no idea about that noise but will have a look. It\'s really loud though, something isn\'t right. MOT due end of the month so I guess might come up then:confused:

humm the gear box is a strange one to be honest
could be the clutch on the way out - or could be that you are low on clutch fluid ( ok you have checked that )
when you say hard to get gears - do you mean if you hold the clutch down you have to force it into first ?
I think the car has had a new gearbox in the past but not sure when (not much history with the car). Yes, just takes a few attemps with the clutch down to get 1st and 2nd gear, mainly just after starting her up.
Does get easier after she has warmed up but even then could be better!
I\'m not using the car much at present so I guess that doesn\'t help. Still, I don\'t regret buying her just yet! Thanks for the advice Stu.

I know it sounds stupid but I\'ve been told in the past to pop a bit of oil in the gearbox where the actual lever goes into the box.
Thanks, anything is worth a try!
Cheers,
Mark

That is correct on manuals, there is a reservoir for that :) not too familiar with the autoboxes though
