Hi all! New user here!
I’ve read a lot of threads on here whilst I’ve been doing a bit of research on buying an FD, although I do fancy buying an RX-7 I’m not 100% set on what to get for my next project!
A reoccurring topic seems to be “£9000 of bills in the last year not including buying it or running it”
I was wondering if those of you in a similar position would mind sharing what you’ve spent a lot of wonga on whilst owning your rex?
I’m kind of in two minds, I don’t know whether to hold out and buy a minter for £10k, or buy a heap and rebuild the lot!
Thanks
Al
i have had mine just over a year, besides fuel and oil, only things i have spent money on that i needed was clutch, ecu, air filters and alternator...
the rest i didnt need but i got other stuff like wheels, bumper, diffuser, coilovers... bla bla bla...
i now need a rebuild, well i have a new engine ready and all the other bits i have got for it... i dont even wanna add up lol.
Ive had mine for coming up 3 years now and apart for chucking Pip £300 for mapping and Jit a few quid for a pfc and a de-cat then ive only spent money at the shell garage ( my bro sends me oil/fuel filters etc).
The key is searching and researching a hell of a lot and be prepared to drive 300 mile to view a car and equally as willing to walk away if its not right.
Rumours of people spending silly money are rife because people buy with their hearts because it "looks pretty" even though it has a few little probs which end up being a 3k rebuild.
Bought mine nearly 2 years ago and although i bought with my heart a bit i know the cars and what i was getting into. Over the winter i spent a good £3.5k on engine rebuild and going single turbo. These cars are great fun and put a huge smile on your face when everything is going well but can really bite you hard in the arse and wallet when things go wrong.
Not trying to scare you off, just saying how it is :D
Adam
I\'ve had mine for 5 years and apart from spending money on mods that I didn\'t need to all it has cost if fuel & servicing! I need a new engine now mind, but that is in good hands at the mo. but to be fair, I bought the first one I saw knowing nothing about the cars..... fortunatly for me I landed on my feet with it and it has never let me down!
Mine wouldn\'t be too bad at all if I didn\'t kee spaffing cash on it to ake it \'better\'.
Only problem is that compared to a lot of cars, parts are not cheap, due to the relative rarity. So when they do go, they tend to go in a reasonably expensive way.
So most of the "£9k bills" are actually £9k on bits making it faster/look better/go round corners :Giggle
I can live with that!
Also I suppose people only post up when they are annoyed with a big bill, not when things are running smoothly!
I\'m going to be looking for a proper "keeper" weekend toy, so if it needs a full rebuild then thats not really a problem, just as long as it\'s not a continual money pit of parts breaking every year!
Yeah, basically.
Problem is parts are expensive.
Example: Water pump.
FD: £90.
MX5: £35
But there are less parts....so wouldn\'t it balance out? :3Confused
e.g.
no £2.5k cylinder head to tune
no camshaft
no timing belt
only 2 "pistons"
Just been looking through here (http://www.carsensor.net/usedcar/search.php?STID=CS210610&PN=0&PMIN=800000&PMAX=1200000&YMAX=2000&KW=rx7&SLST=MT) :mmmm
Well yes less moving parts but:
New Housing: 70 each0 (you might require 2 although you can get used ones)
Used Rotors: 100+ each
Used engine iron: 100+ each
New Apex Seals (mazda): 250
New Water seal kit: £150
Then you can still keep going if you like with less expensive bits like side seals, corner seals, apex seal springs, side and corner seal springs, oil control rings, bearings
Does £3k seem a reasonable price to pay an importer?
Any rex\'s coming in that cheap at the importer with how weak the £ is will be a complete dog imo...
Am selling mine at the moment but not sure it\'d be what you\'re looking for, just had a Streetport rebuild ~2k ago though :)
Sorry, that was xxxxxx yen + £3k import charge!
Ghost - thanks but it\'ll be a couple of months off yet, I have another project (http://www.vwcaddy.com/showthread.php?t=20019) (don\'t laugh :Thumbs-up) to finish off first, this is forward planning!
Ahh fair enough :) Got someone viewing the rex tonight, in a way hope it doesnt sell :(
Thats actually a cool little project :D in my past projects there\'s been a yellow Cinquecento turbo so dont think i\'m allowed to point and laugh :D
Whereabouts in Edinburgh are you matey??
North Leith-ish,
Why...? are you coming to give me a convincing lift? :D
haha, that must make you a Hibbee then.
I\'m orginally from Liberton, then Penicuik where the folks still stay.
Won\'t be making a trip back up in Rexy until Festival time I reckon. So if you can hang around \'til then!!
