Title: Power steering noisy
Post by: Hacker.neo on May 07, 2010, 09:06:25 PM
Hi
i have a FD3 (1994) and it\'s developed a noisy power steering pump. I\'ve sprayed the pulley with wd40 and it cures it till it evaporates. Is the pump on the way out or is it safe to use like this. Ideally i\'d like to know how to cure it because it\'s become quite loud and embarassing when driving. It does not make the squeel when you rev the engine. Could it be a slightly loose belt?
Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like loose belt or needing a new belt. You should be able to test the belt tension and inspect it for wear.

Or if the pump pulley has had a belt thats been put on too tight it might have messed up the bearing, I would try the tension idea first though.

First up, welcome to MRC :Thumbs-up

Sounds like the bearing has died in the front of the pump,

Without the engine running grab the pulley and check to see if there is any side to side play , there should not be any movement.

Next with the engine running put the palm of your hand 5 or 6 inches away from the moving pulley  and see if you get a fine spray of oil on your hand because normally if the bearing has failed oil seeps out and sprays.

Any good mechanic should be able to strip the pump and go to a bearing company and buy a bearing if need be for around £15

Hope this helps and that its just a squeaky belt after all.

have you checked the fluid level? Though your problem looks like it may be a belt/bearing, mine gotta pretty loud when it ran down on fluid due to a leak.

always best to check

I tightened the tensioner for that belt and it cured it at first then slowly it crept back in. I loosened the tensioner pulley and did the top screw up the did the pulley nut back up and now it\'s back to loud again. The fluid level is ok and no leaks from power steering pulley. Also no sideways movement in p/s pulley. Should I just get a new p/s pump and have done with it
