Post by: sidewaysted on May 05, 2010, 06:31:05 PM
Hi, Have a quick question, what all do I need to do when I remove the air pump from my series 5 engine?

Thanks
Thomas

temperatures may rise slightly i guess. But the reason for the air pump is for emmision control. It just pumps air from the intake into the cat. Never heard of it causeing overheating

no this wont cause any overheating issues, all it does it pump air into the exhaust system to try and bring down emissions

Cheers again. Dont know why its overheating. I changed the thermostat. Also The rad hoses do be sucked close when I stop the engine. Anyone know y this is? How do you test the water pump?

If its overheated you will be looking at replacing more than just the water pump or hoses if it has im afraid.

Well if you say that the engine is overheating it might be also about to cause water seal failure in the engine, does the needle move above 1/2 at all on the gauge?

no it just goes to half. It was lyin up for a while. I have only done a handful of miles wit the engine. I had to remove the airpump cause it was ceased. I think the pulley is slippin(due to the air pump being removed) when I have it at high revs cause it seems to ok when I drive at cruising speed. I take it the pipes been sucked in is not normal?

Ah ok I see, hmm if it had been laying up for a while the rubber might be perishing meaning it can get sucked in like that, are you running a cat at all? The air pump does 2 things when it introduces air into the exhaust, one being emissions and the other being to cool the cat. If you have removed the air pump and still have a cat it might get rather hot and have a tendency to fail and implode lol

The usual thing that gets done when you remove the air pump to stop the water pump belt from slipping <-- think i found why the car might overheat, is to run an idler pully where the air pump was or get a yohoo belt and run a double pully on the alternator.

Due to the loss of the air pump the belt now doesn\'t have enough tension and will mean that the water pump isn\'t being driven correctly. I would recommend you sort the belts out before driving too much more.

Just back from taking it for a spin and I didn\'t go over 4000 revs and it didn\'t overheat. I Went back out after that and took her over 4000 revs and then the buzzing started again it steamed up and everything, one of the fecking heater hoses came off don\'t know if it just did or it could of been off a while. Anyways Ill get the duel pulley and go from there.
Cheers for the help man.

Also Im running the standard exhaust from a n/a. Is this safe? Its only the part that connects to from the cat(think the yoke that is on it is a silencer) to the mufflers.

Did it steam up on the inside? If so it might be a heater hose, my heater hose on the engine bay side has been leaking a bit recently, although I know that the heater matrix can leak.

When the car starts up from cold does the top radiator hose (from the top of the water pump to the top of the radiator) feel firm when the engine is cold?

If there is pressure in the system in that hose when the engine is cold it could mean waterseal failure in the engine (usually happens if the engine overheats) where the engine is actually pressurising the coolent system.

Does the car sound like a tractor on idle at all?

The pipe flew off in the engine bay for the heater. Think due to faulty clip and the over heating. I just checked the rad hose and its grand. Not firm when I start up cold Thank God. Id say its the belt that is slipping. Need the duel pulley, do you know of anywhere to get them. I know you can get them online over in the states but might be a bit cheaper closer to home

Thanks
Thomas

Im sure one of the vendors on here will be able to get one if they don\'t have them already. Failing that. WGT Autos do them I believe.
