Title: battery relocation/cut off
Post by: sammysideways on May 04, 2010, 08:49:50 PM
Hi

Just need to clear up a few things on moving battery to the boot and for putting in the cut off switch as its the first job I want to do when home.
Ive been told that RX7\'s can be very sensitive to what guage wire you use when moving the posative, is that correct? if so what guage wire should be used?
Also as im away I cant get to measure the size of my battery, anyone know the size battery box i need or can measure there battery for me?
Also to make my life simples when installing the cut off, which wire do i use that goes to the alternator?
Last but not least anyone got any handy tips? last time i had probs with pull cable seizing up so is there any tips to help me do the job.

thanks in advance

firstly the only reason anyone would have any problem when shifting the battery to the boot is use of the wrong amp rated wire! If you look at it like this: the draw on cold crank is about 140 amp so you want to use anything rated over this.... think I used 150 or 160 amp wire & put a 140 amp cercuit breakernext to the battery as this saves you should it trip as you can just reset it instead of needing to get another fuse!

what are you using the car for?? is it a racer or just a street car with racing intentions?

Yeah thats a fantastic idea. I was going to use a fuse but think ill use a circuit breaker instead.

Its going to be a road legal drift car(ie it gets driven to and from events only)

when i did mine, put a 120 amp fuse off battery and then 140 amp circuit breaker

+1 on a fuse and a breaker, it is possible for the contacts on a breaker to weld closed on a catastrophic failure. With a fuse this can not happen.

i just used the original box from the engine bay and bolted that in my boot, ran a live cable from the original connection point in my engine bay to my battery.

Made the assumption that there is no need to put a fuse between them as there wouldnt be one in the engine bay anyway between those 2 points.

Is there something im missing here?

When the battery and all of the cable is in the engine bay there isn’t much that can interfere with the cable, but when the battery is in the boot you have a much longer run of cable which goes through various bulkheads etc. After time, if not adequately protected the cable can rub and expose the copper which could cause a short. You really should have at least a fuse as close to the battery as possible.

ah right, fair enough, i just made sure when it went through the bulkhead it was through a rubber grommit so it couldnt rub, then just ran it down the inside of the car so there was nothing for it to rub against, might need to have a think about what to do with it then

If you want a steel box, I can recommend http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/cobavalleycycles/ . Got a custom, made to measure steel box with lid for £27!

That doesn\'t make sense mate, if the fuse is your fail-safe then it needs to be a higher amp rating than the breaker.  At the moment your fuse will blow before the breaker trips - so the breaker isn\'t actually doing anything?

I tend to agree, my fuse is 200 amp and the breaker 150 amp

when i relocated my battery to my boot. i fitted two stinger 150 circuit breakers one for my sound system and a hidden one for power to the car.

Agreed that doesn\'t make sense. I have actually never seen one of the breakers weld shut. I have seen them get weak and stop holding properly. I used to own a car audio shop and we used these all the time. When I moved my battery to the rear bin I used 2 gauge wire and 140 amp circuit breaker. The breaker is such a nice feature, allows you to disconnect the battery with the push of a button.
