Title: FD overheating and filling expansion tank
Post by: stavros on April 26, 2010, 09:50:19 PM
Hey all,

First post so please be gentle :o

A friend of mine is moving out of the country next month and has offered me his rx7 for what I believe is a silly price.

It has one fault which he has pointed out to me which is after it has been running for 20minutes the needle on the heat gauge rises and water begins to leak from the front of the engine (im presuming the over flow from the expansion tank?).

If the ingnition is stopped immidiately then water just pours out, however if he pulls over and allows the car to tick over for 10minutes, the needle on the heat gauge drops on only a small amount of water leaks?

He has told me \'it needs a new rad and pipes, cost\'s around £600\'. I personally think theres more to it than just a rad and hoses, but was after any other opinions based on my extremely broad overview of the potential problem.

Any comments/advise would be gratefully recieved :)

Nick

i\'m no expert but it could be a block rador a dead stat! or it could be water seal failure, (hopefully not!)

most probably water seals are going and pressurises the coolant system with combustion gases, engine rebuild , take it to reworx in portsmouth they can test the water seals and cooling system to confirm

It was more the latter I was concerned about; out of curiousity, how much would you anticipate a repair such as the water seal to cost, or would it involve a complete rebuild? :)

£1000 for a FD Type R2 rex seemed such a bargain at the time :2Rolleyes. I\'ll have to see if I can arrange transport for the car to get down to portsmouth to be had a look at... thanks for the replies guys :)

still a good price, a normal rebuild is approx £2500, so you can get a working FD with a newly rebuilt engine for a total cost of £3500 is still a bargain. Good luck with it and welcome.

He was selling it initially as a non runner as he couldnt be bothered to get a new battery; he genuinly looked heart broken when it fired.

I completely agree, £3500 is still a bargain, although I sadly don\'t have the funds until one of my other cars (reluctantly) go :(

Cheers again for your help and the welcome :)

if its in good condition thats still a good price even if the engine is shafted! admittedly it dont sound good but i\'d still check the stat for the sake of 10 minutes, if its isnt working, its going to boil over! you never know your luck! water seal is unfortunatly a full rebuild!

Agree with Blitzen, could still be a bargain.

You\'ve done well to get the stock temperature gauge to move, by the way. Normally they register "Normal" for any temperature cooler than the heart of the sun :(

P.S. try the "champagne test" which may give a very broad indication as to whether it\'s water seal failure

and yeah, welcome and all that

I\'ll have a look in to the \'champagne test\'... Im trying to shift one of my other cars which will give me enough money to get the car and the rebuild done at the same time but its not looking promising at the moment.

Basically a very simple test to see if the water systems\'s being pressurised....start it up with the pressure cap off the filler neck (the one in the centre of the engine between the alternator and airpump, not the one on the plastic AST tank mounted behind the intercooler). If loads of bubbles shoot up in the neck, it\'s bad. If it plsses water out everywhere it\'s exceptionally bad. Not necessarily water seals but very likely.

If you do a search it\'s been explained loads of times. Think there\'s a YouTube vid on it as well IIRC

Good luck with it

Cheers pal, just seen a few vids of it on youtube and just looking through previous threads now. So water volume increase and bubbles = bad. Cheers pal, will text him tomorrow and pop up there after work I think.

Sorry mate, just seen your reply... I will look in to how to get to the stat/test the stat in a minute; hoping to go up there this week to have another look at it :)

every so often a stock block pops up for sale for between £500-1000. maybe keep an eye out in the for sale section, it\'d be worth trying to get hold of a ported short block to stick in it, super-bargain! :D

Cheers for the reply pal, will keep my eye out for one :D. Im going up to look at the car tomorrow and do the champagne test. Speaking to the chap earlier, he says the water that is coming out is cold and not hot, weather that has any relevance or not im unsure? Proof will be in the test tomorrow :)...
