Title: What do you think?
Post by: Dave C on April 19, 2010, 12:01:29 AM
Seen this car advertised on fleabay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150432092192 messaged the guy about it who says he\'ll take £6250 and get a compression test done at WGT. Does this look a good car for the money or could I get a better example for that price? Good ones seem a bit hard to come by:2Rolleyes

i wouldnt pay that much for one without a recent rebuild to be honest mate.

I bought mine with compression in the 7s, mint body and not a mark anywhere inside for 3k

only way id pay that was if he did a compression test and it was 7.9+ on all cylinders

^^^ rubbish. If the mileage is genuine and it comes with those seats it\'s well worth it. I\'m getting a bit fed up of all this eBay bargain culture getting into the rotary scene. It\'s a decent price if the condition reflects the mileage.

hence why i said it all depends on the compression test, just because its done low miles you would buy it with whatever compression figures?

sorry i agree with turbotaster...that mileage means nothing....without the backup of a compression test and maybe history from japan......a lower mileage clock i could probably get one for about £50 and have it installed in 15mins....so that fact that it has 24k on them means nothing..... seats might be fake also...you just dont know...so many flying around....im honestly surprised they came over with the car????....would normally have been nicked before it got on the boat let alone off it...lol

In short......A bit too dear me thinks!!!!...unless some of the claims can be proven.

What if it\'s had a rebuild due to water seals in japan. Or if it\'s been pootled around and carbon built up. A compression test isn\'t conclusive. You can get a better conclusion from the general condition and how it drives.

If he\'s still got it at the weekend im gonna go and have a gander at it

what....no you dont...tell you what, ill get you a mint car that drives ok and get you a clock with 20k on it...and you\'ll gimme 6.5k:2Rolleyes..???...gimme 4 weeks and i can probably have one for you......no joke!!!

pootleting around and carbon build up?...that wouldnt affect the compression???

compression test may not be 100 % conclusive...but its the best indicator...period....short of taking the engine out and ripping it apart.

that does look very nice and awesome seats, but i wouldnt let looks cloud your judgement, like others have said get a compression test and make sure the engine is good :)

compression test isnt the be all and end all...Ive heard of many cases where compression was excellent, then the engine failed after a week or so of owning it...

Best bet is to just go down and view the car before making any decisions...Ive seen so many cars that are just utter ....e compared to the advert.

if an engine has excellent compression the failed after a week thats down to mapping or how the car was abused, nothing else, theres always a reason an engine breaks.

you can buy rx7s for example from carl with a full rebuild and 2yrs warrantee even for detonation(if he maps it) for around 5-6k, i would put my money there before an unknown quantity from japan.

No rebuild or high comp figures, 3.5k would be my max for it.....plus some money towards the seats if they could be proved to be real

my car had awesome compression, lowest reading was 8.5bar, on any face.

it wasn\'t raped, had good fresh oil, nice plugs and it didnt blow because of mapping so bang goes your theory
Title: What do you think?
Post by: turbotoaster on April 19, 2010, 11:09:42 PM
oh course it went bang for a reason......its not always mapping, it can be that the power you aiming for exceeds what the engine was build for(we have seen stock engines up to 700bhp though) or that the boost was to high for the pump fuel, which caused det or the internal combustion was that high it broke a seal etc.

if engines just broke for no reason at all then imagine all the warrantee claims all other the world for engines exploding!

People say in \'it just happens\' which is a load of rubbish, something has exceeded the potential of what that engine could take, whether thats ignition timing, afr or combustion pressure....there are of course a few more but they are the main ones....its not to say that the person mapping it did anything wrong, just that he exceeded a parameter that was of a lower level than he expected it to be for the information he had on that engine

Theres always gonna be exceptions to the rule but in general you get what you pay for. You paid 3k for yours. The clutch was on its last legs, it had double the mileage of this one and shortly after you bought it the water seals failed. And in your "expert" opinion, this one is worth 500 more even though its a later car, lower mileage, has more modifications than yours and comes with a nice pair of seats which even if they are fake, are still worth something. Yeah good one.
Rebuilds and proof of whilst nice arent the be all and end all. Its this "eBay bargain culture" as ad4m1 put it above that dictates this and is one of the reasons I wont advertise any of my cars on eBay as its full of chumps looking to get a steal who then moan and whinge about the engines when they do let go either because they bought their cars on the basis of a few rebuild receipts without bothering to look over the basics or those who proceed to then spend the best part of a 3k rebuild fund sorting out their interior/transmission/suspension/brakes.
Title: What do you think?
Post by: turbotoaster on April 20, 2010, 12:01:19 AM
i never claim to be an expert, the reason my water seals failed was because i cooked the engine, a water hose spilt emptying the engine of water while on the motorway which cooked the engine....if that hadnt happened the engine would still be running strong today, yes it needed a clutch but i had plans for big power with it anyway so i didnt mind.

all im saying is with this one unless its got really high compression figures and is as mint body wise as mine is i dont believe its worth 3.2k more than mine, mine is also a 1994, it says it has a scuff on the front wing and scratches for example.

only way i can see it being worth more than mine is that is has suspension and those seats if they are real.....but alot more, well not really.

there are plenty of rx7s out there and for over 6k i would want a new/high comp engine, because to be fair i could just buy an rx7 for 3k and get steve to rebuild it for 2k with full 12month warrantee for cheaper

these are examples i would look at if i had that sort of money to spend

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1640424.htm  id have a good look at the repair as its very cheap for what it is

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1490565.htm

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1596890.htm id remove the wing and ad r1 splitter

So what killed it then........    Seeing that it blew up then but was pretty good before...

who knows, maybe the stripdown might reveal something; i imagine the same goes for why your engine with 8. something bar let go? :driving

guys are cars are bloody ancient lets be honest and any number of things can fail and lead to problems which could then lead to engine failure of some sort.....thats just the way it is im afraid....old sh£t breaks eventually!!!

yip I agree with Ed, you name a high powered rwd sports car over 15 years old which is reliable and is not a money pit.
Remember the top gear episode with 3 old Italian supercars they all had major porblems and they still was worth 10k each.
The old ignition and electrical wiring system being the main culprit in our cars now

mmm, some good off topic bickering here.

if (big if) the car is what it says with genuine low miles and some trick seats i\'d say it\'s worth it. engines can be rebuilt and swapped but a good condition, low mileage chassis on a mid 90\'s sports car is a bit of a rarity these days.

a heated debate is always good :yes i think there are sooo many things that can cause a blown engine, at the end of the day every car is different and you dont truly know how the cars been treated in the past etc but then thats not just the rx7 as said these cars and other older cars alike are getting old and could have issues or potential issues

agreed,

however, OMP failure would lunch an engine not running premix in about a minute I would imagine.

Now although I admit pre-mix would eliminate this, not all owners know, or even want, to run with it.  If you ain\'t running a PFC with the failure indication activated for the HEAT light the first you would know of the failure would be engine death. Thats\' not down to abuse, just bad luck.

Sometimes (rare admittedly, but my point stands) engine failure can seem to \'just happen\' out of the blue on prefectly good compression, low mileage engines.

If potentially buying a Rex, at the very LEAST I would:

1) Compression test
2) Champagne test if feeling paranoid
3) Check oil to make sure its been changed regularly (ie: not thick, black rubbish) - an indicator that the owner at least know\'s his arse from his elbow
4) Starts hot and cold
5) Good thrash to confirm twins were getting on with each other

just my two pence worth!

Cheers for the replies fella\'s, definetely given me a few things to consider. I\'m going looking at it this weekend. The guy says he\'ll take 4995 without seats. I\'m more concerned about a good engine, good bodywork and good chassis. If the scuff on the wing wont polish out i\'m giving it a miss, can\'t be doing with getting it sprayed. I wanna save my money for power

what trotter says is best, do all the checks and see how it comes up, to be fair £4999 is alot more realistic for a nearly stock car, no point paying \'bride tax\' unless you want to go around shouting your JDM to the rooftops.

As long as its mint, and i mean mint with a great engine it might be worth looking at, but if you have to spend any money on it(like you say the wing) then i wouldnt touch it for that money

good luck with the viewing Dave and hopefully it turns out to be the car you are after. If IF you dont end up going for that, I have a lovely white standardish 95 with 28000kms from new which I am shortly going to sell and can compression test it using my own mazda tester if need be.
