Title: Single turbo advice please....
Post by: suba on April 15, 2010, 05:38:07 PM
With my current rebuild I am going to be dropping the BNR stage three turbos and going to a single. The block is going to be ported to suit the turbo I choose - likely to be an extended streetport - and balanced with 2mm PTS apex seals.

The car is for fun and trackdays rather than 1/4\'s so I need good power without too much lag...

I\'ve got the option of getting a second hand T04E turbo kit - which may well be too good to pass up. The turbo has a larger housing than standard, but I still think that it is going to be too small for 370-400 at the wheels.

I had been aiming for a GT35R kit, but the turbo wont suit the manifold and downpipe for the T04 series.

I guess I could bolt on a T04S, or would it be feasible to re-furbish the T04E to the same internals as the t04S, if so then what housing would be the best to go for?

How does the T04S compare to a GT35R in terms of power and response?

they will be great with a port (or even without) for the record a hotside of .80 plus will work great, i have t04r with a .81 it spools up great. i suppose the tubs will spool slower but create less heat with a larger hotside. btw im on standard ports and i love the spool i achieve

well if your looking at 440-470bhp at the flywheel you need to decide what boost you are prepared to run, im guessing if its for track use you will be happy with 1bar.

Do you have a budget to work with as we can help you out on what to get.

a gt4088 does 480bhp at 1bar on a streetport but wont hit 1bar till 4krpm....is that to late for you, if its on trackdays i doubt you will drop below 4krpm anyway

you can drop to a gt35 sized turbo and have 1bar at 3.5krpm but will have to run 1.1bar to get up to mid 400s at the fly.....personally i wouldnt worry about 0.1 of a bar making a difference in reliability as long as its mapped fine

I was looking at a GT4088 for mine...before I bought a T88 lol remember that a larger turbo will need less boost and therefore less stress on the engine to get the power you want :)

I would suggest either a T04Z or a GT4088, I found an ebay store with new GT4088s, I think it was \'gt3turbos\' or something, very good price, and they are the journal bearing ones that can put up with the rotary heat :)

yes, i looked at them, ive heard some good reports about the company aswell, seemed honest and dont mess you about.

you could go for the larger a/r and save yourself some money but i would only do that if your running a full divided tubi manifold, luckily you can get them for £100 so its worth doing.

It would be a setup id go for if i didnt need more power

I dont really want to push more than a bar or so, and I think that a GT4088 would be too late on spool for me.

As far as budget goes I want something that is quality kit, that will do what I want it too - if that means that the build waits for a bit then so be it.:yes

....but if I can get a T04 series turbo to perform like the GT35R then this second hand kit might be worth a shot.

I wont buy a turbo from ebay - I go through a supplier like CR turbos or Turbo dynamics.  If the exchange rate is good the maybe ATP turbo in the US, but it would have to be very favourable to make it worthwhile in case there are issues that need to be sorted out.

well turbo dynamics want £1000 for a gt35 all depends on what you think is worth spending to be fair.

what manifold does this second hand kit come with?

im just in the process of ordering my turbo!

my advice look elsewhere besides garret! look at borg warner and master power!

i have gone master power and hopefully have found a really really capable turbo that should put me at just about 400 at the wheels at 1 bar.

If you are doing track racing then your rpms won\'t really drop low enough to lose the spool on the turbo, plus if you are going for some porting it will spool quicker :)

Just a thought

The engine is going to be ported to suit the turbo, and opened up as much as possible.:yes

The manifold will have a T4 fitting - so if I go with it then I\'ll need a turbo that will fit it, a GT series wont fit.  I\'d be happy to look at borg warner and master power, but again I\'d need a turbo that will fit the manifold....

It\'s not just how early it spools up that I\'m worried about - it\'s also the throttle response.:yes

well im just ordering a master power turbo that is t4 divided with 1.00 ar take a look at their range, they are pretty good tbh! really helpful too! and the internals can be replaced with garret parts come rebuild if u wish.

if you have any questions about borgwarner ill be happy to answer you on them, also masterpower aswell as i helped malice a bit with that(well we put our brains together)

i think the masterpower t64 or the borgwarner s360 would be what i would look at in your circumstances if you werent going with either a gt4088 journal bearing or a gt3574 journal bearing

I\'ve got hold of a recently re-furbished T04e with a bigger compressor wheel and larger hotside.  The specs are more like a T04s - so that\'ll be going on and I\'ll see what it produces - I think it\'ll be more like 360-370 at the wheels, but we\'ll see.

Thanks for the help chaps.
