Title: how to protect your turbo
Post by: Speedworks on April 11, 2010, 04:04:41 PM
Considering I have a GT40R turbo and a newly built enigine (which already blew 3 apex seal on me in the past) I would like to know if someone ever tried to fix something up to protect the turbo from apex seal bits going in.

something like a shield, mesh (just rambling up thoughts) inside the manifold or such...

High EGT\'s would melt just about anything you placed in the manifold tbh. Just a reminder Garrett now recommend a in-line oil filter on the oil feed to all ball bearing turbo\'s.

I have an EGT sensor to be fitted in my manifold to check that.

Any link/info on that oil filter?

I wouldn\'t run a ball bearing turbo in a rotary but hey lol what apex seals did you go for? Some of them like the ceramic ones just turn into dust, others just bend and don\'t shatter into shards etc

why\'s that then?

Because ball bearing turbo\'s are expensicve to rebuilt (you need to replace the whole cardridge when a wheel gets damaged) other than \'normal\' turbo\'s. They just need the wheel replaced and rebalanced. io words, pretty cheap.

I got mine at half of the normal retailprice (new) so I didn\'t deliberately go for a bb turbo...

I\'m running OEM 2piece 2m seals. not looking for the max power out of it, just about 400hp

t\'s a matter open for debate. Lots of people run BB turbo\'s - check the popularity of the 35r, for instance. It all depends on what you want from a turbo, and what you do to it (eg ceramic coating can have negative effects, etc)
I went for a BB turbo because I valued ultimate spool over anything else. Yes, it may not last quite as long, or be as durable as a BB, but with the miles I will do on it, that\'s not as relevant as it would be for some. Horses for courses.

Interesting stuff about the fitler inline with the turbo - got a link to the Garret gumph on that? Wish I\'d known before making up my tub line :o

I guess this filter can be be fitted with normal oil lines (which come with kits), no?

Well, you\'d have to have two lines and put it in the middle. My only concern would be how open to blockage it would be. Surely an oil filter would remove any potential particualates anyways?!

you can put the filter at the front plate adapter where the oil feed line begins.

But then again, if it gets blocked, how do you know?

exactly...if it gets blocked ...the turbo will starve itsself of oil and your screwed......tbh you cant win......ask yourself this..if this was really needed it would come with a turbo kit from the factory.......i have never seen one come with a kit before!

the only way to protect your turbo is a good filter and a good map........things like egt sensors and afr meters should be the first things anyone should buy for a rotary IMO....

Plus I think if you run the oil in the car to the point where it has lumps of stuff floating in it, im pretty sure the OMP would have failed already :rollin

I do a oil and filter change every 3-6k miles :)

coming back to my initial question....

My main concern is to prevent apex seal bits destroying my BB turbo exhaust wheel if the engine blows. Is there any way? I have an EGT sensor kit, AFR kit etc.

On the other hand... any kind of \'filter\' in the exhaust manifold will be a loss of performance (flow, exhaust gas velocity etc)

You can never win, right? unless the engine never blows on you. you have to love rotaries for that :-)

Hi Martin,
simple really, use apex seals that dont break.
