Hi guys, hows it going? I have read post after post about rebuilds and fancied having a go myself.
Thought i should pull my finger out and start my build!
Whilst reading the many posts i realised that i had a water seal failure, So the plan is to get the block out ASAP get it rebuilt and back running again.
Not looking at huge power gains just yet, this is my first boosted car,i want to see the car handles with power it supposed to have!
Here it is :japanese-038:

Im hoping that my work load will be returning to normal in a week or so,so im going to be ordering up a few bit this week in preperation!
Comments welcome as always!:japanese-040:
And so it begins! Was planning on making a vid of the strip down and build up, but woke up this morning and just wanted to get on with it, so i did!
So, so far iv removed the intercooler, air filters+hoses, throttle body, inlet manifold and the battery.
How i started:
How i finished:
All tagged up so that i remember where everything goes
(http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp230/mccrackenic/RX7%20FD3S/IMG_0040.jpg)
What i wanted to ask is;
is it better to pull the engine with the turbos water pump and LIM attached
Im wanting to stay on standard twin for just now, is there anything i can do to simplify the eletrics and hoses? How hard is it to go non sequtial (spelling?)
Cheers McC
its a pain to get the turbo\'s and lower inlet off while its in the car so just pull it as one, if you are leaving the gearbox in the car, look up how to dis engage the clutch release bearing.... there are a few rats nest (all those hoses under the upper inlet manifold) simplifications, you can remove pretty much everything if you go non sequential, which is easy when the engine is out...
its up to you, i only drove my car as non sequential, i never been in a stock turbo settup rx7 so cant comment, but people seem to either love or hate it lol... if you do go non sequential, get the turbo pack ported to stop boost spikes... also if you simplify or remove the rats nest you will need to run an aftermarket ecu which tbh its worth changing if you can :)
Cheers dude!
Non sequential sounds like it could be on the cards, I do remember reading something about a poor mans set up. I will go have a read see what it entails!
Yeah, my brother and me where like; \'why make a car this complicated? Awsome cars when there working but why have all these nest?\'
Is it easier leaving the gear box in or remove it once its out? Im looking at reconditioning as much as i can.
Im looking to get a an pfc soon,i did post up a while ago about other options but apexi seems to be the easiest, especially when im needing the car back as asap!
if your taking the engine out you dont have to touch the rats nest or turbos etc
hi if you are changing the front bumper, or not using the driving lamps i would be interested in buying them.
Good luck with the rebuild, i had great pleasure doing mine.

lol, ok sorry did not know it was you again
What is that bumper you two have there?

in my enthusiasm of taking stuff off it looks like i have broken the nipples of this piece.

1.do i need this if im going non-sequential?
2.if i do then is there anyone selling one or where is the place to get it
yeh you still need one of them going non sequential, i have a set thats coming off my car (im going single) £20 posted?
15 posted? email me dude: iain.mccracken87@hotmail.com
Okay guys i need a little help, i have drained all the fluids and dis-assembled the gear lever ready for the big pull.
What do i need to look out for when pulling the engine and gearbox out?
and on a separate topic: i\'m wanting a mishimoto fmic and was wondering what\'s the best size to go for,one that doesn\'t require to much modification and also the piping, are the pipe kits on fleabay good enough?
http://j-w-racing.co.uk/section.php/1856/1/universal_intercoolers/ee70d4cb23dfb944d39080bc546c06e3 (http://j-w-racing.co.uk/section.php/1856/1/universal_intercoolers/ee70d4cb23dfb944d39080bc546c06e3)
you only need one if you haven\'t got a boost controler ;) one of those controles the transition between primary & secondry turbo & the other is to control your boost. so realy, they aren\'t required if you have an aftermarket controller, but might be worth leaving the boost one plugged in (electricaly)??

Progress is being made, oil and coolant are drained.
also ripped more stuff off, not necessarly for engine removal but would of needed to be done eventually.

just need to disconnect and plug off the fuel lines, pinch the engine hoist from work and lift.
well i had a good but frustrating day today! Bloody bolts that hold the gearbox in place were "tight as a tiger" but WD40 saved the day with the help of a extension pipe on the end of my wrench!:japanese-017:
Whilst i was under, drained the gearbox fluid, so that\'s everything out, fluid wise.

so that it didn\'t get damaged with this!

So plan for tomorrow is to stick a jack underneath the gearbox to clear the bolts and then hopefully it should be out by end of play tomorrow!:yup:
Then strip down to the block and give it to a very nice person to inspect it whilst i go on holiday!:001_302:
Im so stoked right now:yas:, managed to complete my first ever engine pull today without any major problems. Although i was getting a wee bit nervous at this point as there was really no turning back.

just a usefull tip chap, the oil lines unclip if you remove the spring clips so you dont have to unscrew them, also were you planning on changing the gear box as that can be left in the car making the engine a lot easier to remoce and reinstall. Same goes with PAS and Aircon, no need to remove those or drain them.

Cheers dude, yeah noticed that today, was in too much of a rush to get the engine out.
Im not planning on changing the gear box,but i didnt like the idea of fiddling with the release bearing whilst i was underneath the car and i had read mixed stories about accessing the gear box bolts that connect to the engine. I might just whip the engine out next time.
There was not alot of history with the car when i got it, so my intention was to drain and strip everything anyway so that i know that everything is new.
Just read through your post - good work!
Well the block is ready for the rebuild! :cool
bit of a win / fail, these past couple of days.
Managed to get from this:
to this:

by removing all this:

so that was the win part. the fail part is I forgot my camera whilst I took all this crap off and I couldn\'t be bothered going back to get it and I didn\'t think of using my mobile.....:Hammer! I will probably pay for it later on!
some random pics:

And....just because:King
(http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp230/mccrackenic/RX7%20FD3S/IMG_0119.jpg)
Now I can start putting new bit on.....WINNER!
Oh, and I almost forgot, what is the best way of redoing the protective wire cover?
Its just falling apart in my hands.
if you look on here or fduk at SiH\'s build "project panda" or "ellie" i think it is, he re did all the loom, you can buy special loom tape, its better than the black electrical tape most looms have on them and get new plastic loom covers (corrugated tube stuff) i need to order some for mine too :(
I\'m thiking mine will have to be recoverd when I do my eingine change, so I\'m thinking of using the aluminium loft insulation tape as is it shiny & will reflect the heat away from the inturnal wires!
Coming along good though matey ;)

ah good call! might try that myself!
well got an email from my rebuilder, and he saying that the block the housings and iron are good to use again, which is a boost. And he will be inspecting the rotors and seals today. Hopefully going to go round to his tomorrow to have look for myself.
well i went round to have a look at my engine. And as you can tell from my wanted post, after a clean up there were signs of damage.
Pics are a bit unclear, I used my works camera as I didn\'t have mine on me at the time.
Here is my bits:
damage to the front housing, grooves on the face.
damage to rotor, no evidence how this happened, even my rebuilder is stumped. big chunk off center, near the tip.
just a little bump in the road
Other than the damage everything is within tolerance, the irons just need their faces skimmed by a couple of thow (thousandth of an inch) to get them smooth again.
Good news, both the housing and rotor are good to use again, double check with pip and he said he would use the rotor again, and my rebuilder managed to save the housing so all I need is seals, gaskets. Win!
So yesterday and tonight I got on to cleaning some engine bits!
How they looked after a power hose blast:

getting there, slowly!
Haven\'t done much recently due to weather and recently my daily driver packing in.
But before the thunder last weekend I managed to trial fit a front coil-over, old stuff was really easy to come off, I think it was due to the mass amount of wd-40 left to soak in over the last 2 weeks!

And tonight I have placed the order for all my rebuild parts which included:
1 x 13B Engine gasket set with water seals
6 x Apex seals (2 piece, 2mm)
6 x Apex sealsprings long
6 x Apex seal springs short
4 x Oil control ring rubber seals inner
4 x Oil control ring rubber seals outer
12 x Corner seal springs
1 x Front main oil seal
1 x Rear main oil seal
1 x Pilot bearing
1 x Pilot bearing oil seal
1 x FD Lower intake manifold gasket
1 x Upper Inlet Manifold Gasket
12 x Corner seals with rubbers
Still need to decide on a clutch and get a clutch release bearing.
need some advise guys, engine is coming along nicely.
got me an apexi ecu thanks to a very nice member on here, cheers dude!
right so to run in the engine,i should hav it on low boost. my question is, once iv got the engine in can i control the boost thru the pfc or do i need a manual boost controller? The pfc that i got is a used one.
any advice would go down a treat! cheers!
you dont want to be using any boost when running the engine in. any sort of throttle position to put some load on the engine but dont let it go out of vacuum, a little amount of boost after a few hundred miles.
i dont know anything about the twins etc but you must have some sort of boost control. when do you think it will be back on the road??
oh and i carnt believe how much is actually attached to the block, its crazy
Quote from: karl_tate;705695oh and i carnt believe how much is actually attached to the block, its crazy
Your telling me! lol!
this is my first boosted car, so im abit of noob when it comes to how to monitor and control the turbo\'s. Can you turn down boost levels so low that there hardly coming on?
Well at the moment my daily driver has packed in so im trying to get that back on the road, then it will be all hands on deck to hopefully get it run in and mapped for the trip down to JAE in September, hopefully!
just keep an eye on your boost gauge. no proper way to turn the boost down but im sure others with twins know of a way by blocking one of the many pipes, solenoids and all that mess.
Update!
okay doke so i got my block back, to say that im chuffed with it would be an understatement!

Still have to clean the sump out, fit the oil up take pipe and seal the sump on.
Changed the choice of clutch, instead of the stage 2 exedy im going for a stage 2 ACT 6 puck. It should be arriving this week, along with new coolant hoses and vac hoses to recondition the rats nest!
So the plan this weekend was to get both the front and back done, in terms of disks, pads, lines and suspention! But due to mother nature conspiring against me i only got the front done:Grrr
I started by stripping the HSD\'s down and greasing them up:

as i said, the heavens opened and i was practically swimming

So what is left to do? :
Sort out rats nest with new hoses
bolt on alternator, power steering pump, water pump
bolt on manifold, turbo pack, lower+upper intake manifold
then drop it in
connect everything up
fill up the fluids
get it running:happ:
still have to do the back suspension and brakes
fit diffuser
fit and connect gauges
re-tape wiring loom
getting slow but surely!
Well...it\'s been a while. I will post up more detailed pics of what\'s been added and changed over the last few years. Not much tbh, haha!
Basically got it MOT\'d, insured and taxed the other day :)
As it stands now
