Title: top rear bolt on thermal reactor
Post by: kiwi-mick on March 29, 2010, 11:56:15 PM
ok anyone know how to get that damn bolt off without having to remove carb and manifold?
got skinned knuckels and smashed fingers even my 1/4\' ratchet set can hook on think someone posted that they bent a spanner wanna sell it??
or tell me what angle you bent it?
have bought cranked ring spanner but still no joy i hate that nut!
don\'t want my car sitting on ramps for weeks waiting for decent weather to drop carb and manifold preferably that is..
cheers

Just my personal view but I would Bite the Bullet Mick, get gaskets and 2 No. new \'O\' Rings in for the inlet manifold system and then drop it off.
Advantage is you will have new \'O\' rings in place and they might otherwise fail on you (perhaps next month). Also put new antifreeze in and you\'re OK then for a couple of winters to come.
Remember the hidden nut under the manifold. People have been known to break manifolds levering away at the casting thinking all nuts are off.

Been there myself three times with the thermal reactor to come off, last time I just made a feeble attempt, skinned my knuckles immediately then sighed deeply and Bit the Bullet straight away.

By the way, once it\'s off you never have trouble with that nut again.

That\'s the great thing about this 1st gen forum, we all help each other.
With an ever dwindling number of cars, minimal support from Mazda, and Ebay sellers taking the ****, we need to stick together!

Glad I was never putting the thing back on. Don\'t actually remember having to change the gasket or orings on the intake manifold !

It\'s a bit harsh to call your baby \'spanner bender\'!

Shaun

What happens after years and years is one day you suddenly notice a drop in the antifreeze expansion bottle. If you then peep over the engine from the passenger side, to look behind the carb, if it\'s the \'O\' rings then you\'ll see antifreeze ponding in the little humps and dips of metal where the manifold bolts on.
The \'O\' rings just perish, coolant leaks past the Inlet Manifold Gasket and if you don\'t sort it the result can be a nicknacked engine as the coolant level drops.
A lot of owners have blanked the water holes with core plugs because it seems they\'re only there to warm the intake system up a bit in cold weather.

Yep, they did get blocked up in the 13b because I wasn\'t using a standard carb (far from it) and I put some laser cut plates between with gasket paper !
