Good Evening all,
Just curious to know the best options I have in terms of petrol...
Carl has advised to stick with V Power although after looking for my nearest Shell garage I\'m not actually near anything unless I go on a specific drive just for petrol which kinda defeats the object as I\'ll need petrol sooner. Is there any other options at all? I don\'t mind going to shell if opinions suggest this is by far the better.
Thanks in advance for any comments.
V power would be the best to use but it wouldnt do any harm to use any other Super Unleaded or even normal unleaded as long as your car has been mapped for it. :D

Not totally true Adam as Ive just finished having this debate on one of my more local forums.
Pretty much all of the supermarket so-called supers are infact lower octane cheaper unleaded with the octane rating upped using a bioethenol mix meaning they are not a true 98 ron unleaded fuel.
All of the petrolchemical companies ie shell,bp total and esso among others, as long as they actually produce oil/petrol are pretty much safe to use.
And to concur I also agree shell is the best.
I have worked for all of the above and was told this first hand from a shell QA engineer and have no reason to doubt what he said, hence i personally stick to oil companies for my fuel.

EVEN SO THEY ARE STILL HIGHER OCTANE = SAFER?
RON is a scientific measurement i can\'t be different one place to another. I would agree however supermarket fuel is lower quality and as MON is not advertised that could be lower. I\'ve also heard the calorific rate is worse, i think that means litteraly the amount of chemical energy in a litre so you get less mpg.

Ok i see what your saying but doesnt what i said still make sense that if your car is mapped for a lower octane fuel then its safe to use it

I agree... V-power all the way! The difference in MPG is amaising too! backing up the fact that supermarket fuel doesn\'t give the same mileage: in the MR2 using v-power I can get 400 km out of a tank around local short jurnies, but on supermarket I am lucky to get 320km!!

i also agree V Power all day long i think its safer but when my car was on the standard ECU i used to run it on supermarket super unleaded and run perfectly but now im mapped for V power i wouldnt even think about using anything else

High RON = less chance of detonation on boost = less chance of a rebuild!
I use Tesco 99RON in mine, I know some people don\'t like it, but I have found my local tesco\'s fuel is pretty good, where I have found other tescos in a different part of the country to not be as good, I think what you need to remember is that the RX7 is a performance car, and needs performance fuel.
Basic rule I go by - run what you are mapped for. Personally I run V-Power because that has been consistently shown to be one of th ebetter ones. If I can\'t find any, I\'ll just not use the car.
There\'s no harm, at all in running supermarket 95, if that\'s what you\'ve been mapped for, but it doesn\'t contain the cleaning additives that some others such as V Power do.
I tend to swap regularly between Tesco99, BP Ultimate (Only in an emergency), and V-Power and havn\'t noticed any particular issues.
As far as the RON and MON numbers go, the testing procedures are standardised across the board, so a fuel branded as 99ron (a la tesco) has identical characteristics to any other 99ron fuel regardless of the composition.
The MON number (which is arguably more important as it is a bit more \'real life\') of T99 and V-Power is also identical at 87 <- figures from manufacturers.
I prefer to fill up with V-power as Shell have a better history of fuels, chiefly because I wouldn\'t buy baked beans from BP!!
I work within the oil industry, and can confirm that all petrol \'base\' (ie regardless of whether it has Shell, Esso, Tesco, Morrisons, etc written on the side) on it is mostly the same. The differences are the additives that individual companies add in to \'patent\' it for want of a better description.
I was told by a highly rated tuner that the lower octane the higher chance of det regardless of the map.
If you are going to use lower Octane fuel , then the tuner will pull back the timing on boost, you lose a little power but of course less chance of Det, so run the fuel you car is mapped for.
Tesco 99 is not as good as Shell, I have mapped cars using both, Tesco fuel gives higher knock readings "fact", they use bio-ethonal (5%) to make the ron/mon values higher.
But here lies the difference because of the Bio-ethonal mix in Tesco 99 technically you need slightly more volume of the fuel otherwise you run slightly leaner on a car that was mapped on V-Power if you then used Tesco. An example is alcohol drag cars run bigger injectors and pumps then petrol fuelled dragsters as they need more fuel flow.
So do as the tuner has advised run the fuel it was mapped for, if you cant find the fuel at the time run lower boost till the next fill up or get it remapped for the fuel you will be using most of the time. You can map an Rx7 to run just 95 Octane by changing the timing and boost levels used, you will lose some power of course.

Yes it does mate,:o if your car is mapped for 95 then pretty much anything is on the menu, and need i say it Blitzy, I agree.

The issue comes when you buy a jap spec rx7 that is mapped to 100RON jap fuel and try and run it on morrisons 95ron lol and then the owner asks why the engine has failed after they was on boost for a while *sigh*
Played safe with mine... mapped for 95 and run as high an octain as I can get! but normaly super at the lowest!

Very true mitch and imo a big player in the rotary reputation over the years.
Where i am there is only normal unleaded:reallymad So whats the best octane booster to buy to mix with it?
