FD\'S WITH STANCE! - PLEASE KEEP WORDS ON THIS THREAD MINIMAL!
If you want to discuss stuff (coilover settings, camber, etc) please post here; http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63212

So there seems to be a lot more people now on the forum that are concerned with wheel offset and ride height (aka \'stance\')... :Thumbsup!

Just incase you don\'t know what \'stance\' actually is (-except a trendy buzz-word), check out HellaFlush (http://fatlace.com/hellaflush/) for some -often extreme- examples.

So let see some pics!

i\'d say that stance is more about the angle that the car sits and the difference in wheel offests at than the wheel fitment in terms of how close it is to the arch and stretch.

In which case the black fd with green wheels before it went stealth is the winner and i reckon sih\'s white one is very close behind. and the yellow one might have it, but you cant really tell from the picture.

notice, the main car with stance are the ones without lairy bodykits

What wheels are these? Also how hard would it be to achieve this wheel install on an FD?
thanks.

see, i would say the black FD has no stance, low with (i am sure) 18" wheels and skinny rubbers with spacers on the back and week offset on the front.

also sih\'s rex, would say with the panspeed alloys, it looks to high, and with the ms-01\'s they dont seem to have a good offset at front and from a stright on view you will not be able to see the wheels

but thats just my view!

Heres Hellaflush\'s definition of Stance
http://speedhunters.com/archive/2009/11/13/guestblog-mark-arcenal-gt-gt-hellaflush-the-definition.aspx;

Mexi: When the offset of the wheels are off by a lot and are poking out of the fender. You see this a lot on low riders, lots of new 240 and ae86 owners, sometimes boro car owners in japan, and on 1970\'s vans for some odd reason.

Flush: Perfect Offset. Lowered but not slammed. Most people in our community refer to these as daily drivers. About a half inch fender to tire gap. Lots of drifters are flush just cause any lower,  you\'ll be dragging body kit as seen on Matt Powers and Mad Mike in his RX8, which we\'ll use to defined the term Hellaflush.

Almost: is exactly that, Almost. Almost perfect offset. Almost the perfect ride height. Super close but not quite there yet.

Hellaflush: Perfect Offset, Super Slammed and Driveable. Most owners scrape over everything and it doesn\'t bother them. Its a lifestyle decision that many people don\'t want to get out of and conform to.

Tucked: Seen on a lot of VIP and bagged cars.

So by definition I would say most of these are Flush, with a couple that are maybe \'Almost\'

I\'m with Ben here - Stance is a combo of so many things - and good stance is never practical. That\'s not what it\'s about.

I\'m flattered with the piccies of mine being included, but I wouldn\'t say it\'s got stance :( The Panasports were almost perfect offset, but as said, the car sits too high. The MS01s\'s look a lot better for some reason, as they fill the arches more, but the ride height is still the same. It\'s going to be a similar story on the new hoops as well. Until I sort the ride height with height adjustable suspension, it won\'t have the stance I want.

It\'s subjective too - to me stance is a combo of ride height, tye width and profile, rim width, and offset. I personally don\'t like to see too much of the tyre chopped by the arch, but I love a bit of poke (fnarr). I\'d uploaded a load of piccies for this thread but PB failed hard on me and I couldn\'t be arsed to do it again.

There are deffo cars in this thread that I\'d say don\'t have \'stance\', but that\'s just me. For me it\'s cars like Chester\'s old black FD, Christoffer\'s, and Mark\'s that really push my buttons.

I think this thread needs a primary rule: Don\'t put up photos of your own car - it\'s a little conceited :D

And for all the haters - yeah, a car that sits really well is a compromise, but isn\'t everything? My solution is simple: 2 sets of wheels :)

I belive what your saying is true, that\'s why I am getting a range of difo sized spacers and always adjusting my ride hight!
And the moment with the 10mm spacers on ther back, its only the tread pattern that is under the arch as I hate it when all you can see is the rim! My next shot is going to be 15mm spacers on rear making my ET -2 so that should be a fair bit of poke!

Plus I only added picks as someone else did first, amd just showing change from the original piccy!

I am also not botherd about how easy the car is to drive either, that\'s why I want a unpractical good stance! If a fook the car doing so, I will just have to fix it! Lucky for me I can do that myself! Would be a diffo case all together if I could not do the work!

Post by: Speedworks on March 25, 2010, 10:27:34 AM
I don\'t.didn\'t bother to put my own car up. I know in those pics it was still a bit heigh. In the meantime it\'s sitting another 2cm lower (back then it was MOT setup.... Belgian style) although my tires are rubbing the fenders in the front.

Stance is one thing and I think Hellaflush is something for big cars that are used mainly for cruising.

The FD is a pure sports car... So higher speeds are more common. I wouldn\'t like to sit that low with my FD and meeting up with an unexpected speed bump or any other bits on the road at the speeds the FD is capable of.

Hellaflush rides wouldn\'t need a good suspension setup as the shock travel at that height will be next to nothing, as well as driving experience. All in al killing the true strenght of the FD... superb handling.

True, the sight of Hellaflush rides is great, and I do too love it, but each car has it\'s function and I never bought my FD to be a slow show queen. Then i could have bought something slower, bigger to cruise around town sitting down low.

Again, nothing bad to either \'stance\' , it\'s just a mather of meeting the cars\' perspective and other than for photograph means, I don\'t think it serves for anything else.

But then again this was meant to be a picture thread.. let\'s go back to that.

I wasn\'t going to say owt due to this OP statement, but since everyone else has, don\'t see why I shouldn\'t. I agree some of these cars pictured do not have "stance". I also think that if you have to define, explain and categorise "stance" then you probably a) don\'t have it and b) wouldn\'t understand it anyway.

Furthermore, an FD as stock combines outstanding looks with one of the best dynamically balanced driver\'s cars ever to come out of Japan. If you want to turn it into an undriveable trailer queen simply to fulfill someone else\'s criteria for what a good looking car should sit like, you\'ve probably bought the wrong car in the first place.

so your telling me if you have a good stance i you know it along with other people, you not allowed to explain it, as that now means you do not have stance anymore?

also what is the correct car for a trailer/show queen? no car has/was built with been completely change in to something other than stock in mind!
people who say, why do that to a rx-7 would probs also look at a corsa and say why waste some much money on that. its only a "corsa", i think it mostly comes down to people being jelous as they can not afford to do it themselves!

mine is going to be a show car well a demo car for my business, but hell i am going to track it, who realy cares if its that low ya smash bits up? just fix it!

if a rx-7 to such a good racing sporty style of car from stock and should not be made into a show queen, and that is your only views of a rx-7, then ask yourselves, why did yous buy one it if you don’t track it? as there is no way you can get full use on just street roads!

Weeell, first off, it\'s not a personal assault on anyone, just a viewpoint I thought I\'d offer up since others had come out with their own ones first. Just like that on record, I was happy just to look at the pretty pictures and bite my tongue, but if arbitrary views are flying about why not jump in :D

Quote from: ENVYD;681977so your telling me if you have a good stance i you know it along with other people, you not allowed to explain it, as that now means you do not have stance anymore?

No, I mean that it annoys me that everything has to have arbitrary discrete values attached to it. For example, it is apparently not sufficient for a car to look superb in the way it sits, it has to have a silly name and definition stuck on it "Hellaflush" :3Confused Oh, really, puh-lease . The table posted seems to attribute greater kudos to the more undriveable the car has been made in the search for "stance" and I think that unarguably proves little other than the modifier is simply expressing how great a fashion victim they are.

Quote from: ENVYD;681977also what is the correct car for a trailer/show queen? no car has/was built with been completely change in to something other than stock in mind!

If you\'re actually asking my opinion rather than just havin a pop :D ...then there is no correct car for being a trailer queen. A car is designed as transport. Some are designed nearer the stylish end of the spectrum, some nearer the performance end, sometimes there\'s a happy cross-over between the two, but what they all have in common is that they are designed to move one or more people around. If they no longer perform this function then they are no longer really a car as such, just a rather expensive sculpture. IMHO. Show car, yes, fine. The prettier the better, so long as it\'s still used as a car, no problem. Even if it\'s a 30k Corsa with huge ICE, if that\'s what flicks your switch, I can appreciate the work if not necessarily finding the finished product to my taste.

Yes, it\'s also rare for there not to be areas of compromise in a car that can be improved upon with careful aftermarket modification. It\'s also entirely possible to fduk up a perfectly good car with careless aftermarket modification

Quote from: ENVYD;681977mine is going to be a show car well a demo car for my business, but hell i am going to track it, who realy cares if its that low ya smash bits up? just fix it!

Good for you. Your car will be a superb demo car for your business, it already looks fantastic even unfinished, whatever silly arbitrary definiton of "stance" you chose to apply to it. Even more kudos to you for being happy to drive it as it was meant to be driven, even if that means risking clattering it. I\'m not saying this to appease your clearly injured pride or anything, I honestly don\'t give a monkeys, but because it\'s true and you deserve the accolades :yes

Quote from: ENVYD;681977if a rx-7 to such a good racing sporty style of car from stock and should not be made into a show queen, and that is your only views of a rx-7, then ask yourselves, why did yous buy one it if you don’t track it? as there is no way you can get full use on just street roads!

I never said racing car, that\'s a whole world away, and people who want their car to be like a race car have clearly never tried to drive one, because if they had they\'d know what a horrible thing to try and drive on the road that would be, but that\'s incidental. I think many RX-7s have been developed with a more sporting emphasis, and a side effect of this is to enhance their looks in a purposeful motorsport sort of way.

In fact, the entire nonsense of "stance" presumably developed from people noticing how much better cars look after being lowered and widened for track use. However, one inch ground clearance on a billiard table smooth track is different to the same level of clearance on the road, and claiming that any greater renders you a loser in the stance game because you\'re not willing to regularly smash bits of the car off popping out for a pint of milk does not make one hardcore in my view, but just rather silly.

Much like judging people\'s car on whether it falls into these rather academic deliniations. Just about every car pictured on this thread looks excellent, but alreadythe sneering has begun. "can\'t have proper stance, you can\'t see the wheels from the front" is possibly taking it all a bit too seriously isn\'t it?

As to how I use my car(s), or indeed my sportsbike, on the street, well. You\'ve never seen me drive or ride so I could drive Miss Daisy and you\'d have a point. Or maybe I like to press on a bit :rollin

Quote from: gavink;682058just for you :guinness on me :)

Cheers :rollin

At the end of the day guys, a forum is all about cross-polination of ideas and opinions and surely the beauty is we can discuss such things like adults without getting the knock? If you hold true to a radical ideal of perfection then surely you have to accept this will alienate as many as it attracts and therefore be prepared to discuss or defend it? Maybe not, answers on a postcard

TBH i didn’t even know there was a type of stance called "hellaflush" to me that is a lil sad, i just always thought a car has its own individual stance to its own individual looks, like a person!

Two cars essetially the same theme, stockish body with contrasting wheels. one\'s awesome, one loathesome and you don\'t need a diagram to tell which :3Confused

Your right... that black one is horrible :P

Just my two cents, as this thread seems to be back on the right tracks.

Your car should look and drive the way you want it to. FDUK anyone else :D

Stance is subjective

for me it is not silly offset, silly low and silly stretch like this car
(http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm67/jimbothedumbo/wises14-1.jpg)

it is the right amount of all three. like so
(http://ll.speedhunters.com/u/f/eagames/NFS/speedhunters.com/Images/Linhbergh%20Nguyen/Features/j-evins_786_guestblog/Mikey1.jpg)

as you can see. the car is slightly higher on the back than the front, this angles it down a bit giving it an aggressive stance, which, IMO is a good stance. Also IMO the key to "good" stance on an fd is to keep it flat as this goes with the lines of the car. Saying that, if you slap 18\'s on the back an have the rim almost in contact with the arch, 17\'s on the front lowered so that the car itself sits flat (or alternatively you could just play with tyre profiles. You can keep the nice stance of the fd whilst still looking aggressive. and once again, IMO, more offset on the rears than front adds to the aggressiveness making what i think is the perfect the stance. But thats just what i think, some people may think a car like this doesn\'t have a good stance and just looks stupid.

here\'s an fd to keep the thread going

Sorry dude, but that\'s utter junk. Do you know anyone that\'s ever happened to? And not a \'mate of a mate\'.

Thjousands of people out htere are running stretch all the time in extreme conditions with no idssues at all, but please let\'s not turn this into another one of \'those\' threads - there\'s already one going on on SXOC that\'s full of crap.

My personal experience is probably 60k+ on various stretches and I\'m not dead.

I\'m also feeling kind of proud that on a thread about stance, S-bodies start being used as examples

The Emeral 14a on the massive Works is OTT imho - it\'s offset for offset\'s sake.

Anyways. let\'s get this back to the original point - picies of FD\'s that sit in an awesome fashion!

As an example of how you just can\'t define stance, I\'ll use the below piccy. As said, offset and ride height are key to a stance, but this car isn;t exsreme in either, it just sits so well in MY opinion:

I have a stretched 205 on a 9J and had the tyre come off the rim after about 5 mins of drifting, had to pop it back on with lighter fluid and lynx can, then boom, good to go :)
So the stretch can be to extreme!

well no it isnt sih ive been reading alot of sorry for this " hella flush"  posts and its a big topic discusion a guy asked how safe it was as he was expecting a kid with his wife . loved the look but didnt know if it was safe for the child . There were mixed responses and the last was a sensible guy that stated dude yes it looks cool but i cant say its that safe ive had three blows this year already .

thanks dragon ..

maybe not utter junk then sih !

Well if we\'re going by anecdotal evidence, I\'ve run those 60k plus on stretch, I drive my car pretty hard daily on the crappy roads around Warwickshire, running a 225 on a 10, and never had an issue, so I guess that puts both arguments on a level footing :)
I\'m not a tyre manufacturere who can categorically say they are fine, and I\'m not sure you can provide empirical test data to the contrary, so I guess we\'ll have to agree to disagree :)

I\'ve done track days, fast road, all sorts, with no issues - look at the sh!t the drift guys give cars with daft stretch, look at the dub scene, look at the JDM guys who spend their nights killing it on the touge.

Please don\'t let this thread turn into another stretch haters thread, it\'s already gone way off track, and it\'s a stuck record that got boring a long time ago. Neither side is ever going to change their opinion, and until I see evidence of someone actually having an accident caused by a root of all evil tyre fitment, I\'m certainly not even going to entertain the idea of changing my viewpoint.  I suspect I\'m not alone in this..

Stance is subjective, but of course it\'s definition would be questioned..
Some people aren\'t happy to just judge for themselves so need some affirmation from the collective, that\'s what the link from Hellaflush was for.

Every photo that\'s been posted so far I\'ve been glad to see, some are close to what I consider perfect (-important point that \'cause its subjective): a little bit of function, little bit of form. Yes it is a compromise going low, but I respect that and think it makes a good looking car amazing.

For the record I got rid of my 18\'s and raised it up a bit. It now sits on 17\'\' MS-01\'s (much much lighter that rotas) and I enjoy driving it down not-perfect B-roads so much more..

If any mods can clean the thread up that would be fantastic :guinness Ideally to just posts with pics

If you think it \'sits in a way that is aesthetically and proportionally pleasing\'.. post it up!

Here\'s some that flick my switch;
Low + Function:yes

(Sorry bout the speedhunters rape)

Are these cars \'Hellaflush\'? Probably not, no.
Do I think they have stance? Yes -the way they sit is awesome.
Am I worried if you think they have \'stance\'? No, not really
Should you post of pics that you think might have stance? Hell YES.

lol at some of the post on here, IMO the whole "stance" thing has come from a mixture of drift, US lifestyle and "classic" Jap styling. To be fair its pretty hard to achieve stance on an FD for a couple of reasons:
1. Most FD owners wont make the necessary "sacrifices" in order to make their cars look awesome.
2. Stock Rx7\'s handle decent offest about as well as a catholic priest in an orphange :D

Examples of stance...

Quote from: Nik da Greek;681936Furthermore, an FD as stock combines outstanding looks with one of the best dynamically balanced driver\'s cars ever to come out of Japan. If you want to turn it into an undriveable trailer queen simply to fulfill someone else\'s criteria for what a good looking car should sit like, you\'ve probably bought the wrong car in the first place.

just my 2p

Gotta say its weird how nearly every FD is modified though..
I agree with you about not fulfilling someone elses criteria, waste of time. A bit like giving opinions when not asked

I think really the problem is that everyone keeps putting there \'2p\' in, instead of putting up any pictures, and now we\'ve ended up with about 44p worth of f#ck all

Car\'s not going at all..

Unfortunately, I have a wedding to fork out for in a few months time, so when insurance/MOT/Tax came up for renewal, I\'ve simply SORN\'d it!

She suggested I sell it to help pay, but I don\'t love her that much... :)

So yeah, will be next Spring I get it back (don\'t see any real point putting her back on the road for winter!) and then it\'s ignition problem resolving (so will be wanting a big front mount etc to help cooling, and then may think of doing something weird like supercharging or similar.. Just to be different and all :) )

How\'s yours running? Run in yet?

Unfortunately, I have a wedding to fork out for in a few months time, so when insurance/MOT/Tax came up for renewal, I\'ve simply SORN\'d it!

She suggested I sell it to help pay, but I don\'t love her that much... :)

So yeah, will be next Spring I get it back (don\'t see any real point putting her back on the road for winter!) and then it\'s ignition problem resolving (so will be wanting a big front mount etc to help cooling, and then may think of doing something weird like supercharging or similar.. Just to be different and all :) )

How\'s yours running? Run in yet?

Id imagine getting one of those ebay fmic kits is your best option, seen them being run up to 600bhp so they are more than enough for you.

Saying that ive seen twin power run up 600bhp and 9s plugs up to 450bhp so did you ever replace your coils, they do go bad after a while, that could be one of the things thats stopping you as 360-400bhp isnt that high.

Im all run in now, got power fc on, got my intercooler, rad, greddy style elbow, pretty much everything to give my twins a kick up the ass.

We are just coming into summer, this is the perfect time to be driving it!! Put some tax on it man.....you can marry your lady anytime, wait till your old and have wrinkles, enjoy the rex while your young enough!

Yeah, that\'s my thinking - I was just gonna get Steve to do one of his front mount specials and run with that!

As for next, yes, the coils have been swapped, but only to a pair from a similar aged car. I\'m tempted to try and get my hands on some newer ones (if they fit?) from a later model, or, failing that, something aftermarket (assuming that\'s possible? I guess so!). If that fails, everything bar the ignitor will have been replaced with new/uprated, but I\'ve never heard of one of them failing!!

If done correctly, yes (and depending on your definition of \'stance\');

This is a long but fantastic read if you are in the pursuit of either

Feed front wings and sideskirts, rolled and flared stock rear arch, RE-a old style rear diffuser, shineauto rear light spoiler.
Not sure on wheel fitment. would imagine something like 9.5j on the front, maybe 10j+ on the rear, with low offset or spacers. Someone might else might know more or have a link to an article on it?
