Title: Rear Brake Re-Setting Tool
Post by: CHC (RIP) on March 22, 2010, 09:20:36 AM
There are a number of re-setting tools available to re-set the rear brakes or can this be done without - which is the better make of tool?
When using tool, are the corners handed? i.e n/s turn anti-clockwise, o/s turn clockwise
Regards, Cliff

They both go clockwise on most cars i think. Well worth buying the tool even if not needed, it\'s so much quicker and they normaly come with an adaptor so you can use on the fronts too.

Tool must be handy but I\'ve always used Circlip pliers, you know the ones, two pointy prongs at 90 degrees to the grips. I use them turning both pistons clockwise and pushing in as I go. (Always gone in fairly easily).

Hi David, sounds reasonable but not too sure in this instance as \'she\' has only done about 500 miles since her last MOT in 2007 and standing ever since.  Will try your suggestion 1st and take it from there.  Many thanks.  Cliff

Hi Timmy, glad to hear that it\'s a single direction, this means only 1 tool to buy (if needed) - was it a single tool that you bought or was it a set and whatt make was it?  Thanks,  Cliff

i used a old socket with 2 bolts in it with the head facing out, did the job for many years although i now have a universal tool that fits on the end of a extention bar :)

Haynes Manual for the FB says - re the back discs -  "Using a disc brake piston wrench (49 FA18 602), turn the piston in a clockwise direction until it is fully seated in the caliper. Also the piston stopper groove should be in-line with the caliper cut- out".

It\'s in my manual supplement at the back for rear disc cars (Series 2). Series 3 must be the same \'cos its the bit I use on 1986 FB.

I can\'t remember what the stopper groove thingy bit looks like but never had any trouble so it must be obvious when you get to it. I seem to think it\'s the big vee slots that you\'re turning the tool against?

Hope that helps.

Hi Dibs - what an excellent set of instructions, have saved in readiness for use. I managed to acquire a brake wrench from a friend and tried it earlier, OMG was it tight. I think I\'ll be using these instructions once i\'ve bought the refurb kit. Regards Cliff
