Title: Who can re-cover a \'vert roof?
Post by: papercutout on March 21, 2010, 10:40:18 PM
Someone mentioned on here a while ago (just after I joined up!) that they\'d just had their roof re-covered, and it was about £150!

My roof is shagged - old fabric, big splits either side and duck tape etc will not stay stuck, so I can\'t really even patch it - thus it is leaking!
Hence wanting it recovered. Unfortunately I missed out on Pete Taylors roof a while back - was skint at the time and couldn\'t really get to him!

So can anyone tell me where I can go? The framework is fine, the rear screen is fine, the liner is fine, just the outer split!

Thanks again guys!

I\'m going to be doing mine myself. New hoods are about £450 in this country don\'t even ask Mazda as there well over a grand at the dealer. I shipped mine in from the states much cheaper even with taxes and there 2 or 3 guys on ebay that sell em.

I used these guys:

http://www.carhood.com/mazda.htm

But I got my hood from the US, as I wanted a better material than the vinyl - it tears in the corner pockets just behind the doors, pretty much a design fault I think.  The only down side was they wouldn\'t warranty it as it was an unknown - but he did comment on the quality of the material.

The first time I bought a genuine Mazda one for £600+ and it lasted about 4 years before splitting - I wouldn\'t waste my money on them again.

These were the people in the US I got my hood kit from:

http://www.ezsofttops.com/

I went for the German Fabric - you\'ll have to email them though, as it\'s not on the catalog off the web page.

How much was that one shipped over then Prof?

I\'ve emailed LOADS of people, got a few responses - normally £600+, which is pretty OUCH for me! The car only cost me £500!
Will keep searching.

I got mine from Ezsoftops and I never paid any customs or anything as they sent it as fabric samples. I had one made on the white car for about £600 and the orange one by the time it was fitted by a specialist upholsterer (he recovered my seats as well) the cost was about £500. I seriously doubt you will get it a lot cheaper than that all in including the fabric and fit. You can do it yourself.  believe it or not but the nuts and bolts that hold the roof down are £300 to buy from Mazda, they always corrode so be careful with yours. Soak them in wd40 from the insideat least overnight.

If you do snap the bolts/screw things that go around the bottom outside back edge of the hood - and you may do - I have a couple spare, but also found something that would probably be an exact match in a local boat yard :)

My hood was about £400 including import taxes from the US, fitting was just under £300

Thanks for all the help guys - I don\'t know if this is all in the \'members only\' section, if not might be worth stickying it, as there\'re plenty of people out there who\'ll need new roof\'s!

I\'m sure I can fit the roof myself, it\'ll just take a whole weekend in the summer! I\'ll keep asking round.

Any idea\'s on what I could use to temporarily patch it up?

I have tried all sorts of things to patch and none worked as the area where they go is the most stressed part of the roof when its down (above the pockets) Ideally another piece of vinyl and some extremly strong but yet flexible glue so it does not go hard and brittle. If it has gone by the pockets as i suspect it has then dont worry too much as any water that goes inside the car generally fills the rear wells up,just make sure the bungs are out.
Its a design fault with these roofs and hence a reason why I would not buy from Mazda.
I did try to sell a roof on here last year and really struggled to get any decent money, its only when people realise what they are worth to replace that they start to realise why they go for so much even 2nd hand.
