Hi all just thought i\'d post some pic\'s of the new project/scrapper.. undecided untill i pull some panels off till then she\'s in limbo.. and that series 2 had to come up 1 day after picking up this one:(

OMG the journey was a nightmare, missed a connecting train at paddington, by 10 seconds and the national rail bloke saw me coming and closed the door anyway, so there goes another 3 hours to the trip left house at 7.30am and arrived at far west wales at 5pm all the while sweating on the fact my wife is only 3 weeks from full term.
so thankfully the car was as described (especially as there was no way i could make all the connecting trains home that night) so after the deal was done i started the journey, at least this journey went well she feels very tight mechanically and behaved beautifully.
think there is a few extra bits on her than the previous owner knew feels very responsive for a car with 88000 odd miles on the engine.. will have to make space in the garage asap to find out i guess anyways enough of my waffling here are some pic\'s..

Good luck, lets hope it stays on the road..................I much prefer the ser 3 to the ser 2, just for the interior and wheels alone.

It looks straight enough from the top Mick, lets hope it\'s ok underneath.

I wouldn\'t get too depressed about that series 2 car.... at least yours is a T&T runner.
That S2 looks like a tired old thing to me.

i get the preference for the wheels man but the interior?? personally i find the series 2 a bit sharper especially in full black.. looking forward to having to learn upholstery to get this one to the colour i want..

the wine coloured interior is of its time but I quite like it.
My white series 3 had it and it looked class. ( back in 1989!)
The only thing is that if you change the colour of the bodywork, there\'s not a lot that goes with it.

you could say the depths alright(milford haven) yea about 300 miles on the train and 330 miles via road did it very well thou didn\'t miss a beat mechanically.
did a little digging at the rust areas with wire wheel, holes falling in everywhere only little but still not great. was hoping for at least some surface rust. looks like wheel arches are gone, channel around rear hatch needs most of it cutting out and repairing, repairs that have been done are badly done like square sill repairs and rust coming through nasty work i have to say..
also some of the floor pan looks like it needs to be cut and welded.
door frame where the door hinge attaches is gone anywhere else and no problem welding but there is a nightmare getting the door to be even when it\'s replaced.
it\'s not looking good guys.... won\'t decide till she\'s up on ramps thou she might be not worth repairing but at least the bits are worth more than i paid for her.. motor is excelent and has a performance exhaust...

am going to copy exhaust in stainless for those who are interested don\'t fancy paying £450 for someone else to do some tig welding... not sure how much i can do it for but it\'s gotta be less than some people are charging

nope def not stainless looks very much like the janspeed pictured in the leaflet you emailed thou ian, but in plain steel (maybe a copy) think Damian gave me copies for the exhaust invoice was around the £400 quid mark i thought at the time thats expensive for a mild steel exhaust
just looking at the invoice, it\'s a rotechnic\'s invoice £428.00 for exhaust plus £100 fitting even broken down as follows
twin front pipe £174.52
silencer middle£69.88
silencer front £104.62
rear silencer /t pipe £267.48
12a exhaust fitting kit £29.00

they have a discount on exhaust on bottom but also added £100 for fitting
either it\'s a performance exhaust or the engine has been ported it is noticablly more power full than my series 2 12a

That\'s stainless money.
There\'s a few breakers about with stainless systems on them... hardly worth making your own, usless you want a big bore custom system

would a big bore system improve power Ian?
or does the N/A 12a need back pressure i was always led to believe that as free flowing as possible was best but have read a bit about the "pulsing" helping to remove the exhaust from the chamber...

The engine is basically a big air pump, there\'s no point in having a huge exhaust to extract the gases unless you can get the air/ fuel mixture in the induction side in sufficient quantities, usually with forced induction.
The more you can get in, the more you need to get rid of but for a N/A 12A in a road car, one of the off the shelf performance exhausts, like Janspeed or double S is fine.
They have been designed, tried and tested to have good gas flow with sufficient back pressure and scavaging properties.
A custom made large bore exhaust is a waste of money on a road car in my view.

Track cars are a different kettle of fish but the easiest, cheapest and quickest way to get more power from a standard 12A road car is to do the following....

1.ditch the airpump and restrictive ( and heavy) standard Mazda exhaust and put on a  good set of headers and a performance exhaust.

2.Drop the viscous fan for an electric one

3.convert your secondaries to manual operation

After this you\'re into engine mods, carbs, turbos, porting etc..... which = £££££\'s

for that sort of money(£464.23) i\'d expect a full stainless system but when i look at it , it\'s a very weird setup.
looks to be mild steel headers into flange then into a stainless front silencer connected to a straight single mild steel pipe to another stainless silencer then back to mild steel before going into a steel twin pipe back box.
I can\'t believe someone charged this sort of money for this, absolutly over charged in my opinion
I think rotechnik\'s stung this bloke a fair bit after seeing whats on the car and the invoice, this has definatly put me off yet another uk business, i\'d never use their services... another uk company on my S#@t list
yet another example of why i never let any british business touch anything of mine... do it yourself at least your not likely to get a part stainless system for the price of a full stainless system..
but to be fair the £464.23 did include VAT and a thermostat and a thermostat gasket and a fan belt....

You\'ll probably find that this is a full stainless system.
The silencers are a higher grade stainless steel than the tubes, as it\'s the silencers that collect more condensation inside them and rust out first on most cars.
The tubes are still \'stainless\', but are a lower grade allowing for a bit of flexibility in the system.
100% pure stainless steel would fracture from time to time due to the movement in the system.
This is why the \' full stainless systems\'  tend to have a bit of surface corrosion on the tubular parts of the system..... most still come with lifetime guarantees though, which shows the confidence the manufacturers have in them.

Many people think that stainless steel is 100% pure and won\'t rust but most stainless isn\'t
Find some stainless ( in you kitchen for example) and put a magnet on it.
If it sticks, it\'s not 100% pure.

I can\'t see Rotechniks deliberately mis-describing this exhaust and charging over the top for it.
In my dealings with them, Ive found them to be spot on.

Moorage - any luck rummaging around in your shed? You didn\'t happen to find a pair of front brake calipers too?

Mick - got any pics of the exhaust? Once you get the headers off, you should be able to see if the exhaust housing is ported - be interesting to know.

Hi Ian i asume you mean i grade such as 409 which works well at high temps and gets a slight coating of surface rust which actually helps prevent rust forming deep into the metal and is significantly cheaper option. i wasn\'t expecting polished 304 grade(or 316,321,309,441 or the new titanium alloys) which you can keep shiny as all hell but these look like mild steel to me, i\'ll take some pic\'s for the post so you can see what i mean, i work around a lot of different grade stainless steels in an industrail plant which generates it\'s own power(100MWe) and i\'ve never seen any grade of stainless look like this...

That\'s right Mick, yeah, I think most of the off the shelf stainless systems use 409.
The manufacturers like it cause it\'s cheaper and easier to weld and work with and most buyers don\'t care what it looks like once it\'s under the car as long as it doesn\'t need replacing every couple of years!
They\'re not bothered about a top quality polished system in 304 as long as it\'s cheap and does the job!

I\'ve just taken a \'Double S\' stainless system off the car I broke last month and that looks just like rusty mild steel between the boxes but it is sold as a full stainless system. I put some pics up of it when I get chance.

I always used to think that a stainless exhaust looked like a show stopper for ever and not rust at all but the commonly available, cheaper priced ones do.
I  think \'full stainless system\' is a loose term for it.  Technically, I suppose it is but it\'s not quite what people imagine it to be!

got called out in the middle of swapping exhausts onto the series 2 today, back to hospital baby problems. still no joy. put the exhaust onto the series 2 when i got back and took her for a spin. it\'s got no where near the power of the project car think the project car has at least a mild port or extended port massive difference and noise is different.
thats the good news....
the series 3 looks quite rusty and starting to have all sorts of electrical problems only minor but with so many they are becoming a pain in the rear. and the rear floor well behind passenger seat is flooded with all the rain. def not looking good Ian. sorry to let you down mate i had you earmarked for the fuel tank but...
under the series 2 noticed lots of what looks like mole hills burrowing through underseal in it.. pretty sure i\'m going to need it, again sorry, if i break the series 3 or not i need the series 2 running as i\'m using her as my main vehicle other than a long wheel based extended roof transit(not really practical enough for everyday use and a real headache to park)
that was as far as i got today weather pregnant wife and a neighbour who\'s trying everything to stop my extension going ahead all take a great proportion of my limited time not to mention my son 2 1/2 years old very busy little man..
Ian I will try to decide monday if i\'m going to attempt to scrap or strip, if i scrap, the trailing arm i think you also need is yours. and will get it to you asap
cheers

A couple of, hopefully, interesting points about stainless steel (SS) before anybody throws back their newly bought stainless parts;
SS is steel with added chromium>10% + sometimes additional elements.
2 types of SS are magnetic; ferretic and martensitic, martensitic grades can be found in fasteners & cutlery.
409 is a ferretic grade (magnetic) & has the lowest chromium content of any SS, it was designed as a cheap material for exhausts which shows!

I hope I haven\'t come across as an @ss, these are just the useless pub quiz type of things that rattle around upstairs!
