Title: Xenons,HID\'s
Post by: Adam fc on March 20, 2010, 11:58:49 AM
Has anyone fitted a set of xenon\'s,HID to there fc?

Could anyone recomend a kit that would best suit an fc as there are loads availiable cheapest around £40.00 6000k.

I understand its a simple set up but i was unsure if it was going to be any different as fc\'s have pop up lights.

I had quite a bit of trouble geting some kits through the MOT - notably the ones with 2 bulbs.  In particular those with HID dipped and a Halogen Main beam.  The problems are:

1)  The light unit for the FC is designed for a dual filament bulb - so only produces the correct beam pattern if the bulb is in the centre.  This means on High Beam they will fail an MOT.

2)  The standard H4 Bulb has a built in mask to blank off half the bulb and the cap is also painted out - to prevent direct light from the bulb going forward.  These dual bulb kits have neither of these systems so fail the beam pattern on dipped.

However, all is not lost !  There are motorised HID bulbs that move either a shield or the bulb itself, and these eliminate both of the above issues.  The only gotcha with these is the length of the motor - because it can foul the back of the light unit if it\'s too long.

I found a kit from HIDS Direct I think it was that had short enough motors - and they do the wiring harness which sorts out the Hi/Lo Beam electrics for you.  It plugs into one of the standard H4 Bulb fittings and wires to the motors, and HID Ballasts.

The only other thing to do - is get rid of the dip/dim circuit - you only want the HID\'s on when you select dipped or main beam - not on sidelights with engine running - which the standard Euro/UK FC will do.

These are the motorised bulbs I have - note the metal sheild around the side and top of bulb :

This is the wiring loom that you can order seperately or comes in the kits:

You can probably find cheaper on ebay - I\'ve been through several cheap ballasts - but the bulbs from these guys have never failed yet after 3 years on the car.

So how would I go about disabaling the dip dim circuit as prof stated they are popping up when the sidelights are selected. Is there a way to disable this so that only the small lower bumper lights come on when sidelights are selected??

There is indeed - a very simple way ;).  Have a firkle around under the glovebox - you\'re looking for a grey relay unit - rectangular -with about 7 wires going into it.  It\'s the dip/dim controller relay - if you just unplug it, the lights return to the US/Jap model of working - and only the sidelights come on without popping the main headlights up.  I would post a pic - only I\'ve lost the relay since taking it out :Giggle

You still need dipped / full beam when they are selected on the switch - but not having headlights coming on when sidelights only is selected isn\'t an MOT fail.
