Post by: chrisJDM on March 19, 2010, 11:54:55 PM
just trying to troubleshoot a problem where my rear brakes are sticking on a bit, i have tried loosening off the handbrake with no effect. also the brake light stays on the dash.  How does the park function work??? just wondered if its related.

I believe that the park function on the auto box locks all the gears in the box so nothing can move. It might be a seized caliper that is binding though, what does the brake light look like?

well its the light that usually goes off when you take off the handbrake.  i have undone the nut on the side of the handbrake and comes loose nd had no effect.  the rear brakes seem to be rubbing badly both sides

The hand brake light can also come on when the brake fluid is low.
If your working on the brakes on an auto, pop it into neutral, then you can rotate the wheels.

if the car is in park, the hand brake light shouldn\'t be on.

Topped up the brake fluid and the light now goes off so that problem is sorted, also bought myself a re- winde tool for thebrakes so next weekend will try unwinding them a bit and see if that stops them rubbing

Remember your rear wheels wont spin like your front wheels as there is drive train resistance.
It almost feels like your hand brake is stuck.
Do you have the same resistance on both rear wheels ?

I have not actually jacked the car up when I drive it you can hear the rear brakes rubbing badly, also really hard to push on the flat
