Title: Newbie!
Post by: Tobys1 on March 17, 2010, 09:17:21 PM
Evening all!

I\'ve been waking up thinking of RX7\'s for some time now so thought i better route out a decent UK forum, I take it this would be it?

I currently drive a Lotus Elise S1 111s and love it to peices, however i do fancy something a bit more "mean" and fancy getting back into the Jap Sce

First off there seems to be a huge difference in prices, anything from 3k to well over 10!!

Whats the deal with that? surely 1 model cannot be 3 times better than another?

How often is a rebuild required, and how much is it going to cost should i get in such a horrible situation?

Ive got up to 10k to throw at one of these, but from what ive seen 6-8k should net me a good-un?

I want a modified one that already done to 3-400bhp ATW would be lovely.

Finally, really like the later models with revised front and rear lights, when did this come in and whats the going rate for a rx of that sort of age?

Thanks in advance :)

need more info on the spec of car youre after. if you want revised front and rear then either want 99 onwards or a modified early one...99 spec bumper and spoilers are common mods. price wise you pay more for better condition lower mileage cars that have been well cared for. conversely u pay less for higher mileage cars which show their age (and rx7s show their age badly when theyre tired). 8k should get you a nice standard late low mileage car (97/98) or a 94-96 mid miles but well modified as a guide but theres some cars worth a lot. look out for previous accident damage especially from japan as most imports are generally damaged. if u want uk spec then watch out for rust

they can vary in price alot due to being rare like a spirit r, condition, rebuilds and mods. alot of cars out there have had 10\'s of thousands spent on them.
3-400 whp is very wide ranging for these cars as 300 could be on stock twing where as 400 is upgraded turbo.

Should being a uk car increase its value?

whats the pro\'s / con\'s with a single turbo conversion?

UK cars are quite rare, they only officially imported 194 IIRC. As Mazda stopped importing them in \'98 so you won\'t find any of the Series 8 (\'99 - \'02 plate) cars as UK. UK cars have marginally cheaper insurance which is a bit of a bonus but apart from that there is no real benefit imo. A UK car is much more likely to have a full service record though for piece of mind, but as these age cars tend to have had a rebuild anyway its not particularly relevant.

As far as going single goes, the main pro is that you get rid of the "rats nest". This is the fairly complicated system of solenoids, one-way valves and pipes that manages the changeover from Primary turbo to Primary + Secondary running that you find under the Upper Inlet Manifold. Its a major source of issues within the engine with valves sticking, pipes splitting, etc.

Performance-wise, going single is the only way to get big power out the engine. Standard twins will top out about 350bhp, uprated twins about 450bhp, and singles can get you upto and over 1000bhp. (All with appropriate supporting mods of course!!). Arguably, going single will ruin the characteristics of the engine as you will get more turbo lag to a greater or lesser extent which the sequential system was designed to eliminate.
