Title: FMIC on stock twins
Post by: JasonC on March 17, 2010, 08:29:29 PM
Considering upgrading the intercooler on my rx from the standard one, just wondering what realistically i can expect to gain (or lose!) from running a fmic if i\'m still running on the stock twin turbos?

well a smic trust one will handle upto 400bhp for a start and also as you up the power it will keep the intake temp a lot cooler than the standard one ever could. all you have to be aware of is heatsoak in traffic and that you need to make sure the ducting is sorted aswell

It will be safer if you run a FMIC or SMICs, just make sure you get the piping correct if you are going FMIC, if the pipework is too big you will increase the lag of the turbos as the turbos have to fill up more pipework before they get to the engine! Its why I uprated my top mounted intercooler on my FC3S :)

I had a Feed FMIC and rad fitted recently to replace the factory SMIC, air temps have dropped a lot and even my water temps seem to have somewhat. I haven\'t really noticed any increase in lag but haven\'t had much chance to boot it yet :)

Just make sure you get your map tweaked for the cooler air.

The actual amount of lag introduced is actually negligible dude. Factor in the speed the air is flowing through the pipework, and the amount flowing, and you really won\'t notice a difference - Placebo FTW. Far more important is core design regarding flow characteristics and pressure drop.

On Liam\'s Fc he had a stock turbo and FMIC, the lag was quite a bit due to the turbo being quite small, but as long as the pipework is done properly its ok :)

You sure it wasn\'t throttle response he lost rather than turbo lag?

i had one of the cheapy greddy fmic\'s off ebay, was running 1.1bar on twins with heavy street port then ran 430bhp on single turbo with same intercooler and seemed to be up to the job fine.  When i got it fitted on the twins didnt noticve any lag difference just lower temps :)
