Title: CDI Ignition Systems
Post by: 12at on March 17, 2010, 02:39:32 PM
Hey have been looking into some CDI Ignition systems for my 12at as im wanting to run some decent boost on pump along with a australia based water injection setup that has been used in many 700rwhp+ 13bs.

Does anyone on here run any CDI set ups  on their engines?

interested to hear from some people and what setup they running..

Cheers

M&W pro 16 on mine more like a welding spark than the usual weak spark be carefull with any CDI though it hurts if you get a belt also look at upgrading the coils.

Where did you get your m&w setup from? I am thinking about getting one but can\'t find a good price in the uk.

The pro12 is what a mate back in aus suggested and is a 2 channel. He said to run 2 boxes and get some cdi coils..

I have heard of people using the pro 14 and using the Bosch hec715 coil

Any more info on sellers in the uk if not might be a aus purchase again

The bosch 715 is the same coil thats used by haltech, motech and microtech just rebadged Thor racing are the UK agents but it ain\'t a cheap option tbh.

Yeh Thor racing has typical bull.... UK pricing.. Change the $ for a £ symbol

There is no way a pro12 4 channel is close to $2000!!

Will speak

i assume your talking about riceracing w/i, if so how much boost and what size turbo, that will give us an idea of what sort of system you will need, if rice racing then pre-turbo w/i

Yes that is correct i have a rice pre W/I set up.

looking at around 20psi on my half bridge which has a T67 on it.

Also looking at something that i can use ones back home on my 1000 with a 13bt and a GT42rs.

Another one if been told isnt to bad to run on the leading plug only is the dynatek CDI.. Anyone heard anything about that?

it depends how much spark you need i suppose.

Looking at it there ware 2 ways this can be done with most manufactors.

either plug a unit in, kind of like twinpower or the ARC-2 which is a full CDI unit.

Or use a kit that just connects between your trigger and coils like there dyna 4000 or okada projects plasma booster.

since we are only planning on strengthening the leading plugs it doesnt need to be to complicated, the problem arises is the lack of testing thats been done on rotarys,

We know that a twinpower can cope with a t70 turbo with 23psi of boost and 575cc of water on pump fuel....but then we dont know how much further you can push it.

Also comes down to budget partly, ill give dynatek a call in a bit and see if i can get someone from tech to give me some info

Ive just got off the phone to dynatek and the guy knew nothing.. he said basically call Dynatek in the states here in the UK they basically deal with bike stuff.

Post by: turbotoaster on March 18, 2010, 04:34:43 PM
haha ditto, spoke to him aswell and he mentioned he spoke to yourself, i was gonna email them in the states now, have you already done that yet?
Title: CDI Ignition Systems
Post by: turbotoaster on March 18, 2010, 04:38:24 PM
he did mention though that the arc-2 would be much easier to fit than the drag system and they will both put out the same level of spark so assuming we get good info from USA this looks promising.

He did mention he thinks it would work fine though from his basic knowledge on car ign systems

No haven\'t had a chance to email them or call

Yeh he did say it was capable of running with standard could but again he was shaddy and kept on asking some guy in the back ground. He said he has never opened the catalogue.

Speaking with a guy back home he has run the arc2 on leading and the microtech x4 on the trailing and has had good results.

Let me know what the USA say :)

well i basically emailed them explaining its for a rotary engine, havent gone into requirements in terms of power yet as i wanted to make sure i was speaking to someone who knew what i was on about.

a simple proven setup is a MSD 6AL system with 2 blaster coils, theres wiring diagrams ready and you know it will defo work, its $340 for the lot so thats at the back of my mind currently. they are only 135mj though

if i explain to them i need a strong spark with 100lbs of air, 6000cc of fuel and 800cc of water im hopeing there will be a way for them to calculate whether there system is up to it, they have said 189mj which is alot, much more that M&W which have been run on some big power cars(115mj)

i think the standard setup is about 60mj, so thats over 3times the power
Title: CDI Ignition Systems
Post by: 12at on March 18, 2010, 09:41:48 PM
when you say 60mj you talking about the stock FD setup? Microtech X4? what?
Title: CDI Ignition Systems
Post by: turbotoaster on March 18, 2010, 09:47:41 PM
i mean the completely stock setup.

also been looking through the msd range, if we went up to the drag setups we can go all the way up to 330mj but i dont think we need to go that high and your looking $1000 for that.

looking at enzos car, that made 709whp he ran 32psi of boost on e85 with a gt42 size turbo using a autronic cdi setup which claims a peak of 126mj and he had no ignition breakdowns.

But then he wasnt running water so maybe the 180mj+ is what we should go for just to make sure

reading more into the dynatek kit it seems to do everything all the other kits do aswell, things like multi-spark and two-step for drag racing, out of everything i see thats looking most promising

just had a look at the dynatek stuff, from what i can see it is two channel no? so even if i wanted to run these on leading and trailing, it would be around £500 for the lot? that seems cheaper than an M&W setup, I could be very tempted. wonder if they would do a group buy?
Title: CDI Ignition Systems
Post by: turbotoaster on March 18, 2010, 09:54:50 PM
well you would need 3 marco i think.

good thing is that its good 18krpm on a piston engine with means that it will be fine for 9krpm on a rotary

one for both leadings
the one for each trailing, its just whether you would need them for the trailing, do you have a power/setup goal in mind?
Title: CDI Ignition Systems
Post by: marco on March 18, 2010, 10:14:18 PM
i think they are two channel. so could run one for both leading and one for both trailing. the ecu isnt rotary specific so I will have complete control of each one (rather than running wasted spark) and for and extra 250 ish quid i would rather do it right first time! setup is still being finalised, at the moment it is low compression rotors, ALS seals, gt35r (although I am looking at changing that to a presicion 6256 if i can find one, and sell my brand new 35r- any takers?!!)pre turbo water controlled by the ecu. engine will be built to spin to over 10,000 and whilst the turbo might not be able to take the engine up that high, i would like my ignition to be able to- to future proof me if nothing else!

Post by: turbotoaster on March 18, 2010, 10:34:57 PM
hmm well if you want to rev it that high have you checked on rx7club to see what the really high rpm guys are using, infact find out what ross at dragon was using because he used to rev his to 11k+ probably his setup would cover most things, i did email him about it but he never responded to me.

If your revving that high im assuming big bridgeport and jay intake? You will also need a massive rear a/r to help it keep flowing at that rpm(not trying to tell you how to suck eggs, just like discussing stuff)

yes from what ive been told from aus contact and also the site is that for leading  you would require the ARC-2 , the universal install kit and one of their dual CDI coils.

Speaking with the guy here who knew nothing all in was around 500 i think.. Could always speak direct with the guys in USA if toaster gets some good info, but i would think we would need min of 5 or 10 units..
Title: CDI Ignition Systems
Post by: turbotoaster on March 18, 2010, 10:57:45 PM
going off what you said mate it looks like this is what we need

Dynatek ARC-2            Â£232.98
               Arc-2 Installation Kit     £54.54
DC1-1 dual output coil £120.77

that comes to £408.29 which should in theory give us enough spark for our goals.

thats only for leading though, but that does most of the work anyway so i think it might be fine.

Could really do with someone who has 600-700bhp car running water to come on and help as at the moment alot of my info is from rx7club

yes thats pretty much what he wanted from me, i can get the same kit from USA with a water tank for $300(£200) but even he said it actually only cost him $140(£95) to make the kit so if i could be bothered to contact all the same place he did theres a big saving to be made.

Did yours come with a tank, as im sure he wanted about £300 for a little metal tank haha

bit of an update, just found out that some of the guys in australia are using the ARC2 on there rotarys, I think rice racing actually use it on there 700whp pump gas car, just trying to find out now whether to use a single dual coil or 2 single coils and i think im gonna go for that system

hey mate rice racing will never have a 700rwhp car..

the car your reffering to is from RaceOnly..

Still thinking of what to get - mates going to the USA so also looking at some of the MSD 6AL ignition setups .. Unsure what to get as i want it to work on my fb and then also my 13bt 1000 back home when we relocate.

I myself are running the bosch hec715 for trailing and the 0.8ohm CDI coil from dynatek on the leading spark..

Is working well thus far..

another thing i need to kno can i run this setup with out water injection for the mean time with out any problems
thanks again

you dont need to run a water injection setup to use the ignition system, but you will have to be careful how much boost you run because of preignition problems if your fuel octane isnt high enough.

I have the PDF installation file on my pc that dynatek sent me, send them an email for it

Hey I just installed the arc and dc12-1 coils I just am a little confused on how to bridge the ignition signals from the microtech threw the arc to the two coils and what\'s the settings used on the front of the arc?I\'m just alittle nervous on burning something up..

Hey there,

what microtech you running??? with my LT10s i have spliced the arc2 triggers into the leading wires between the ecu and x4 box. I found that totally cutting between ecu and x4 the car wouldnt run properly.

I am also running mine as per below - you could run the multi strike if you want but i think it may play abit with your timing as its a multi spark over single

Where have you got yours mounted and do you have any buzzing coming from it when its running and rev\'d??
Title: CDI Ignition Systems
Post by: up&coming on August 21, 2010, 09:37:00 PM
I have the lt8s with no x4 boxes. There\'s one leading signal coming from the lt8s and I have it going to the blue/black wire to the arc then there a blue running out to the coils but I slit the into two wires then running to the positive on the coils. This way I have it the car wont turn over so I thinking my way connected isn\'t rite
Title: CDI Ignition Systems
Post by: 12at on August 26, 2010, 01:14:57 PM
I would say you need to split the wire from the LT8s that goes out to your coils and wire this to the input of the ARC2 and then run the 12v and trigger from the ARC2 out to your coils.
Title: CDI Ignition Systems
Post by: up&coming on August 26, 2010, 04:41:40 PM
ok so theres two grounds coming from the arc, i ran them out to the coils and theres only one orange 12v should i split this off to the coils to? i thought that 12v was to go to a key switch to turn the arc on and off?
the coils only have 2 post and i pluged the arc trigger and grounds to them should i plase the 12v.
another thing my harness isnt pinned like the one dynatek is showing in the wireing blueprint. pin14) White/Black Coil 2 Signal from ECU in there pic but on my harness pin15)houses this wire. i may have to repin the hearness to follow there pin layout.
thanks again

If your using a Dynatek harness the pins should be sorted..

Orange wire is 12v ignition
Black is 12v for the coil
white with trace i think it is - signal to coil

The orange wire into the ARC is the 12v supply to the coils

k i took everything apart i will try it again tonight the way your saying and see if she pops over..

im getting a feeling this wont work unless the signal is coming from a x4 direct fire setup..thinking maby the wasted spark is firing to fast for the dynateck to get %100 of signal..
