Guys, I was working on mine lastnight & found that inside the drivers door lock (mounted by the lock barrel in the same aperture) there was a small bulb, same as you get in the ash tray by your left elbow! Never noticed any light from it before, but deffinatly a std mazda fitment. has anyone else got this & have you noticed it working before?
Jono
i think its a stock fitment on all FC & FD
never known it to work before
if you lift the door handle slightly can you hear a microswitch click ... i think the idea is that you lift the door handle , the light comes on and you can see where you key goes
Works on all of mine :Giggle
well arent you the lucky one !! LOL :D :D :D
yes, i discovered mine a long time ago now, when i changed handles to feed and swapped the locks, comes on, along with the ignition key light when you lift the handle
Works on mine, when it stopped working I changed it to high intensity 12v blue led, looks quite cool when on, will see if I have any pictures
mine comes on with the central locking when i unlock the car
i have one near the ignition which comes on when i unlock the car but i dont know where you mean the other one is, im confused lol
In the external keyhole in the doorhandle, Karl! If you lift the handle, it\'ll come on so you can see the lock in the dark to put the key in.

....all over Britain and the World the tranquility of an early March night is shattered by the noise of hundreds of FD doorhandles being flapped about aimlessly to the tune of cries of "Oooooooh, yeah, look, it does light up" and "fduks sake, that\'s another handle bloody broken then" hahahaha
My handles are fine thank you :p

ROFL :)
The light in the external door lock comes on at the same time as ignition light... as Nik points out, when you lift up the door handle :)
As it is a small fillament bulb, I suspect that it is quite prone to burning out. It\'s easy enough to replace:
- unbolt the door handle - two nuts inside under the plastic cover
- off pops the door handle
- pull the blub out of the holder that keeps it in position next to the lock
- cut bulb off, solder or crimp new bulb to wires :)
If you have the door card off then you can unplug the long tail (two wires) of the bulb from inside the door, and then take the whole lot inside so that you don\'t have to work outside in the cold :)
rx7boy is right - an LED would probably be a useful upgrade, I couldn\'t find a white 12v LED when I replaced mine so just swapped in a normal filament bulb.

yeh mine light up when i use my keyfob on my alarm, never really needed it though as the button unlocks the door anyway and if i had to use my key it would be because the battery was dead anyway so be a bit late then
i have done mine with a small red 12v led
Ok, just checked mine and the drivers door one isn\'t working. Was upset to much after finding that out to then walk around to check the passenger door lock :o

Ada,
I\'ll save you the trip... there isn\'t a bulb in the passenger side :)
Dude, it\'s a DRIVER\'S car :Thumbsup! Passangers are just there to help with weight distribution, for those of us who are "built better" ;)

I knew I\'d seen a full guide on how to replace the door lock light...
... and here it is:
http://robrobinette.com/door_lock.htm
QuoteTo replace the illuminator bulb
Remove the door handle by pulling the triangular panel off the inside of the door and unscrewing the two bolts that hold the lock mechanism in place. There are two wire coat hanger-like wires which are removed by twisting the plastic devices they fit into. The wires then simply pull out of the lock assembly.
The bulb is held in place by the same clip which holds in the door lock cylinder. The bulb is a small incandescent one with fly-leads which are very fragile. These wires break off where they enter the glass of the bulb.
You can replace the bulb (it comes attached to an 18-inch wiring harness) without having to buy a new lock. To replace the bulb and harness, you will need to remove the driver\'s door interior panel. (Two screws at the front, one at the rear and one under a flap behind the interior door release). Having removed the screws, gently pop the panel off the door and carefully lift it off where it locates into the top of the door. The two grommets which the panel locates in on the top of the door are very delicate and my local Mazduh dealer can\'t find them in their parts catalog, so be careful. There are three white plastic electrical connectors towards the rear of the door, near its top edge. The one nearest the front of the car is the one that this bulb connects to. The harness is also held in place by a clip which is fitted from inside the door itself, so you will have to pull the plastic sheeting off the inside of the door to get access to this.
I don\'t know how much Mazda charge for the bulb and harness, but it is possible just to solder a new bulb on the end of the harness. If you do - make sure you either a) disconnect the plug inside the driver\'s door panel b) disconnect the battery or c) put the key in the ignition and turn it to the ACC position (check the ignition switch lamp is off before soldering) I used a similarly sized bulb from an illuminated switch I had lying around my garage at home. It\'s not quite as bright as the original, but does the job.
It also explains how to replace the plastic "cover" flap inside the lock barrel that prevents water ingress into the lock mechanism... the importance of which is not to be underestimated given our frequent wet days/freezing nights.

done a little mod today, will see what it looks like at night.
