Hey guys,
As you probably gathered from my previous thread my rear calipers were pretty tired - handbrake not working at all, and then I broke the nearside one!
So I had someone on here send me a replacement pair (great service, great bloke!) and so proceeded to remove my old ones.
Easy? Hell no! 3 of the 4 bolts that hold the calipers on sheared - bonded themselves to the ali hubs! New bolts on order from Namrick (suggestion again made by Ed, the seller).
Unfortunately the drivers side caliper seems to be seized - we tried to twist the piston back in, it wouldn\'t move, got a g-clamp on it, no luck either.
I\'ll bleed them once the bolts are here and they\'re mounted properly, but for now the drivers side is hammered on into place, unfortunately my old one was also seized or I\'d have swapped it.
So has anyone got a rebuild walkthrough/guide? I\'ve got a rebuild kit from BigRed already! Or suggestions as to what will help?!
Thanks guys!
Have you got the caliper winding tool?
I found it really hard to move it with pliers, but the tool is excellent. Once it\'s moving it will come lose easily. If they really are siezed badly - a squirt of plus gas, duck oil or similar penetrating agent can be used, as you are going to be replacing all the rubber parts in any case.
Once you get the piston out - you\'ll see all the other bits that the kit replaces.
I found on one of my old calipers, that the metal rod that the caliper swings on had siezed - but it actually came lose from the carrier.
As far as rebuild is concerned, the field service manual is quite a good reference.
what dave said
you cant push the rears in - you have to use the tool to do it
i spent about an hour with pliers and all sorts - and resorted to spending £20 on the tool - trust me - money well spent
BUT i have heard that you can use the spanner an angle grinder comes with to wind them back in ( sometimes )
Spanner on my angle grinder is too big, I\'ve already looked :p
Sooooo, where can I get this famed tool?
And the field service manual? (I\'ve a haynes already, and it\'s rubbish for stuff like this)
The braking part of the service manual (pdf) is about 2.8MB in size, so too big to attach. If you PM your email addy I can send it to you - it\'s better than the Haynes as it\'s more detailed.
It used to be on 1300cc.com - but I think it got taken off from there - but may be worth a google - as it\'s hosted on several sites.
As for the tool - Halfords do the Laser one for about £25

might be able to get it cheaper - I got mine for a tenner a while back - special offer :)
£10 thats a steal !!
mine was £19 at the local motor place i think - you can get a cheaper one that look like a cube - but i went for the dearer option ( must have been having a bad day ! )
once you have the tool - it will take you about 10 seconds to wind the piston in .. shame you cant just hire one for an hour
I\'ve just ordered one... Managed to get it for £18.50 inc P&P on ebay (after reading through a few and making sure it wasn\'t a let hand one...)
My email is papercutout @ gmail .com if you could pretty please send that to me! Thanks mate!
PDF on it\'s way :)
Thanks guys! I got the tool, after a good bit of effort she\'s free\'d off! Just need to bleed the rear calipers now. Hmmm, where\'s that hosing gone?!
(Prof - big thanks for the PDF, it\'s good to have!)
they are handy to have :D

No worries - glad you got it freed.
You\'ll be especially glad to hear she passed the MOT!
Woop, there\'s another FC back on the road! After 6+ years of being off the road, she feels wobbly - probably lots of shagged bushes. Any recommendations? I\'ll have DTSS eliminator bushes soon.
Also, she snapped the NEW alternator belt that the garage had fitted last time earlier. Fortunately I had the tools and a BMW E30 M42 belt in the car and did it in the car park after work, but it\'s very strange! (another item to add to the compatibility list though!)

Glad to hear you got the caliper freed and passed your MOT mate, did you end up getting those lines from Hose Solutions?
For alternator belts, I got a complete new set from MRP just before christmas and they were pretty reasonably priced...
the DTSS is fun to do ... i have done a write up somewhere about it
Glad its on the road and free from MOT woes for another year. I would\'nt mind a copy of the pdf file as well. I have just got the service kit for the rear rebuild so will do a step by step pictorial of how its done. Its such a common problem and perhaps the easiest to put right. My rebuild kit was about £26. I have my local garage to wind the piston back in for free but I might devise something to use for future use. My front calipers I use a huge G clamp, easily about 12" in length and perfect to wind those in as they just push in.
Emailed :D
Maybe you can help me on the thread I\'m just starting now? Lol
What i did for winding the calliper was get a couple of bits of flat bar, measured the distance between the holes then drilled one bit of flat bar and put 2 bolts through and nuts on the other end, i then welded a bit of flat bar from the centre of flat bar and used a shifter on it. If that makes any sense :)
Well i never bothered with the rebuild in the end, I just took the calipers off, took the handbrake spring off and gave the levers a good workout, they are completely easy to move now and then I adjusted those levers as per the workshop manual. Mine lock solid now bang on the 3rd click of the handbrake and both together. I will rebuild another set of calipers I have another day. The one thing I did notice is that one of the handbrake lever bearings in the caliper has a lot of play so may see if those are still available and replace it. Shame to get rid of that caliper as its rust free and works very good. Thats the beauty of jap imports.
