Title: Removing ABS
Post by: m1tch on March 02, 2010, 09:29:17 PM
Hi guys,

I have a bit of an issue, my ABS is being a bit special and isn\'t arming itself at the moment, im not even getting the sound of the ABS pump pressurising, its not a fuse so it is either one of the STUPIDLY expensive sensor that have got damaged from when the brakes were upgraded, or its an electical connection somewhere.

I was just thinking of how easy it would be to remove all of the ABS as required by the MOT. I read in the hayne manual that the actual ABS unit needs to be removed for some of the fuel maintance items! So I am just thinking of removing the ABS all together as its has been arming itself intermittantly, but its just in the way!

Has anyone done this with their FC? I know it was an optional extra so I know a lot of them don\'t have it as standard. It will also help with getting space to put the e-manage in as the ABS ECU is massive lol

i thought it was a case of take it out and just bridge the lines over ??

i suppose it could be the ECU thats failed ? - but im sure you would get a light by the clock showing a failure ? ( if it still works )

I had a chat with prof last night, think it might be a relay on the actual ABS unit - prof sent the manual over and there is a covered box like a fuse box on the top of the massive ABS unit lol I will check the relays under there as the ABS has armed itself fine before and the ABS light comes on when I drive away. The ABS pump is ment to prime after about 10 metres which you can hear, so it might just be some corroded contacts on the relays on the ABS unit *crosses fingers* I have checked the ABS ECU, seems fine (I already have the carpet up with the e-manage lol) as far as I know the sensors are ok :)

I kept all my old egi\'s non abs brakes for future use! You end up with far less brake lines everywhere, like that bit just above the firewall there\'s like 3 lines i think, you get to clean that up with just a single line,
I read somewhere that you can just remove the bulb for the abs light in the idiot cluster.
Then your left with a cleaner engine bay and imo better brakes.:mmmm

Ive cut my rear abs lines as the abs is coming out anyway,is there a quick and easy way to just dissable the abs system with it still on the car??

Is there a relay or main fuse i can just pull and drive it like a car with no abs?

Not too sure but id say you have to remove the pump, interested to know how it goes.

Just found this, good info on what you need.:D

There are 2 options for the ABS system:

1.Fully working
2.Completly removed from the car

Those are the only 2 options, anything inbetween will cause a fail, so if I were to remove the ABS, all of it has to go, that includes the pump, brake lines, ABS ECU, Wiring and sensors EVERYTHING lol

I think it might be my pump relay has gone though, which isn\'t too bad.

You can sell the sensors easily for £50 each, they are £131 new lol!
