Title: 13 mpg
Post by: A7RXY on February 26, 2010, 12:08:23 PM
Oops............just filled up, since the last fill I have done 131 miles, and put in 45.89 litres, so I make that 13mpg..........bring back my porsche.........I hate that taxman........I must say that when I fitted the new carb I just bolted it on and it started so I left it alone, and I have only done 131 miles since then, most being short trips. I\'ll try to take it on a run to see if it is any better, watch this space.

The Black one with 13B and holley, is on 19/20mpg without pushing too strong, but not like a grandfather :D  the 1981 restyling, is less, something better your and lower expecially when I drive it on my town with a lot of hills..

23.4 average since mid 2008. Bit more summer, bit less winter, avoiding short trips all the time. You need to keep brimming it and computing the distance against fuel over a longer time than 1 fill though.

I do drive like a grandfather as well. I am a grandfather, maybe that\'s why.

I never understood how adjustments of idle speed/mixture would affect the main running consumption. Surely the fixed jetting does that? Does it affect it much? Anyone know?

Time to focus on air filter and plugs Dibs? Brakes binding? Also the famous 1st Gen leaking fuel tank syndrome, though I think you\'d know if that was the problem.

Did we establish that the carb has to be set up to go to all 4 barrels on hard acceleration only?

When I first got this car in 1989 I was getting 24/25 mpg but then it was only a few years old, my sers 1 back in 81 regularly did 25 mpg.

David it has a new filter and plugs plus the brakes are all new aswell. So log started and lets see how it goes.

That sounds poor for LPG compared to a piston conversion.

My red 1st gen doesn\'t even do 13mpg. I limit the amount of driving I do in it because the fuel costs are crippling.
I\'ve put £40 in it in the last 2 days and I haven\'t really been anywhere.
I\'ve never had such a thirsty car, my other 1st gens didn\'t drink it like this does.
It comes to something when I have to take a 4 litre supercharged V8 Jaguar instead because it\'s much more ecomonical. I get 21 around town in the Jag driving normally, slow and fast driving.
It\'s not as if the Mazda has earth shattering performance to go with the consumption...
I might have a dabble with the mixture although I\'ve had nightmares with these Nikki carbs before.
At least the car runs at the moment, which it might not do if I mess with the carb...

I\'m realy suprised by some of these figures, as I was expecting you all to say that you were getting the low 20\'s, as Ian says I\'m also loathed to mess with the carb settings as the car seems to be running ok.

It\'s a basic impco carb setup without the vac advance working. It\'s runs quite rich on tick over. Been using it every day for about 3 years now

I think the low 20\'s like Dave gets and Dibs used to get should be about right for a well maintained car in top tune just driven normally ( not thrashed everywhere)
When we bought these cars in the 1980\'s, they were still pretty new and had probably been main dealer maintained and were unmolested.

When we are now picking up 25 year old cars, anyone could have messed with the settings, tune, etc, etc... over the years

Dibs, your car is very standard and with that brand new bobby dazzler of a carb, should tune up very close to how it was originally.
If it was running very rich though, you\'d have thought that the mot would have picked it up, same with mine really.
I must be trailing a haze of fuel out of the back like a Vulcan bomber!
Green it ain\'t!

Thats really sad, 13 mpg, my rx3 with a 13b and 48 ida at 80 will do  23, could get more but thats another story, driven hard it is in the single figures, but rewarding. my s1 rx7 was ok but bland in comparrison, now has ida too, has any one tried a 16v mk 2 golf gti?
a far superior car - as standard, 139 bhp, 1.8 0-60 in 7.9 and similar in price, runs circles round a first gen handeling wise.  I had 4 mk2 s between 97 and 2009 and still have urges from time to time. A7 id get a compression test done and then have another look at your carb.

Another check would be that the manual choke is coming off properly.

Incidentally i never wait for the magnetic release or whatever it is - I always kill it manually after the first couple of road junctions, though that shouldn\'t affect things a lot.

I dont think you quite understand our love affair with the 1st Gen. No front wheel drive box could ever compare (in my mind).

There are loads of cars that are faster than a 1st gen, same as there are loads faster than a Golf.
It\'s not really the point is it?
I drive a 1st gen because I like them, not for the performance.
If I want to go fast, I\'ll take my daily driver, \'a far superior car\' than a Golf.

A Golf is a tediously bland front wheel drive shoebox primarily designed to accomodate lots of shopping,don\'t care how many red pinstripes, exclusive badges, spoilers they stick on the things, they still look naff.
Even if they had 500 bhp i still would\'nt be interested, just look at them!

I got mine after pip took me out on track in a 200bhp fb and drove it sideways round every corner. For pure speed I drive the fd !

It\'s more about the rotary engine for me. I love the fact too it is a rare car on the road and people being very positive.

my first rebuilt gen 1 a 81\' 12a with king springs and bilstiens lowered just over an inch, chrome modgies with 235/50/13 and 215/50/13 eagers was one of the best handling cars i\'ve ever driven in the dry (although you did have to work). in 1996 I spent a very memorable drive doing the taupo to naiper road with a new 911 not able to draw away from me(in the mountain bends) on one of the best roads i\'ve driven anywhere in the world.(not talking straight line speed obviously!) and he was definatly trying.
before someone claims i\'ve not driven many cars, i\'ve worked on many cars A/C over the years and part of the job was returning them, not to mention transporting fresh jap imports within NZ for a friend. so GTR\'s NSX\'s (which in my opinion is the best handling car i\'ve driven) WRX\'s Evo\'s. S-pak holdens, monaro\'s even the occasional ferrari ,maserati\'s thou i wish i had enough money to own the last two...and if i did i\'d have a stable of generation 1 cars of all spec\'s (I\'m a big sucker for gen1 cars)

Shaun

I had a bit of that today. Used the 1st gen  today in the sunshine and pulled onto the car park of a retail park to return a phone call ( no hands free in the RX7).
I was stood  by the car on the phone and when I\'d finished a bloke came across the car park and said, " I haven\'t seen one of those for years and years"
"No , there aren\'t many left now" said I
" They\'re wonderful cars, I had one as a company car", he said. "I worked for a Mazda dealership in the early 80\'s and it was the company demonstrator, it was silver and the registration was ******X. I loved it and it used to bleep at you as you drove down the road"
I said " yeah, they still do!"
He then said that the dealership didn\'t even have a process in place to deal with warranty claims on the RX7 as it was so reliable and hardly ever went wrong. He siad that after a few years he moved jobs to an Austin Rover dealership and they were stacked out with warranty claim against the new cars.
It\'s a strange thing isn\'t it about the 1st gen.... most people who\'ve owned and lived with one, loves them... me included.

I don\'t get people going all misty eyed when I park up the wifes 206!
