Title: Coolant Issues
Post by: Jase_ on February 22, 2010, 06:56:51 PM
Alright guys

Went to start my car earlier and noticed the airbag light took a while  to turn off, then the coolant light and buzzer started going so turned  off the engine and checked it, the coolant dipstick thing is a bit naff,  (couldnt see a min or max on it, but it was dark) anyway i added a bit  of water then it started to leak out somewhere round the bottom, but  stopped after a few seconds, as if i was putting too much in, surley it  would have overflowed out the filler cap?

Also, the coolant was a browny colour, only says one thing to me that,  but it didnt smell or feel as if it was oil (http://www.fduk.org/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif)

Drove the car about 300 yards to my mates and the buzzer came on half  way up the road again then turned off again after a few seconds

Anyone shed some light here?

Hello Jase,

First thing you need to do is to make sure you have the correct amount of water in the engine and then go from there.

When the engine is fully cold fill the water system up via the rad cap you can see on the engine, ignoring the rad cap in front  and the tank with the dipstick on the wing.

And then from then on only check the level via the engine rad cap.

Hope this helps,

hi mate from my experience, the over flow tank can drop out water when your feeling up, but u need to get under the car top it up and see if you can see where its coming from ie if its coming from around the turbos or not as thats where mine leaked from, if its not leaking the buzzer coming on could be a faulty sensor on the front of the water pump on the lefthand side where you feel up the water your see half way down the neck is a sensor. or the water might just of been under the level of that sensor which will make it go off aswell, top it up to the brim wait a sec for the air to come out then feel if needed again n see if it goes down wilst driving it around for a while, the bad news is if its not leaking out when hot or cold it might be water seals inside but highly doubt thats the case otherwise u would have trouble starting it. dont forget to check if its leaking hot n cold as u could just have a hair line fracture in a pipe that expands when hot or cold.
