Thought id show you all the state of my rusty car! Iv had a look at some older threads like grinders rusty rex and and mine looks pretty similar if not worse, i can nearly put my foot through the nearside floorpan area:mad:
I took my seats out today to get better access, was going to take the carpet out but iv managed to get it bent up out the way and save the massive headache it would be to remove the dash.
Plenty to be getting on with then! i need a new grinder mines dead also welding wire as the stuff in mine\'s a bit rusty, damn rust gets everywhere:mad:
So loads of work for me then!

wow!!
flintstone car lol
Looks like you have at least a mornings work there :Giggle
Still, better out than in :)
Worth checking the front crossmember while your in rust mode as well :wave
Wow thats way worse than mine was. Makes me feel better about catching it early. Nice to see you repairing it, I\'ve seen cars broken/scrapped for less.
Yeah totally is a flintstone car ha!
Im going to start cutting next weekend that\'ll give me time to get a new drill and a makita or bosch angle grinder had a cheapo one and it was a pos and popped after no time at all. The lessen i learned there is dont buy cheap tools!:evillaugh
Im not too bad with metal work as my dad was an aircraft engineer and he taught me a little here an there but not much on welding! I have a mig welder and an arc stick welder.
From what iv read on here what grinder used (gasless mig) and what i read on a welding website i should only need the mig welder.
Checked the front crossmember that seems good, it just seems to be worst around the area where the jack has stoved in the floor over the years!:2Mad
Quote from: TiddlesRX7;673737Wow thats way worse than mine was. Makes me feel better about catching it early. Nice to see you repairing it, I\'ve seen cars broken/scrapped for less.
To be honest it looks worse than it really is! the cars only done 55k stock miles and apart from the rust isnt in bad shape at all. Took the turbo off the other week to port the w/g and was shocked at how clean the thing was, no cracks anywhere and the hotside wasnt even rusty, well pleased with that:yes
expanding foam abit of fiber glass and cover with underseal lol
Quote from: Adam fc;673772expanding foam abit of fiber glass and cover with underseal lol
ha yeah the previous owner had tried to fix it by welding thick steel plates underneath and they used some sort of resin on the floor inside!
Im actually looking forward to cleaning the old peeling underseal off the bottom an cutting out that rust :2Confused
Bring on the cuts bruises and molten metal down my back! :Giggle
Decent grinders aren\'t expensive mate, just get yourself plenty of the 1mm cutting discs from screwfix and go for it!!:D
Quote from: captainbizzaro;673793Decent grinders aren\'t expensive mate, just get yourself plenty of the 1mm cutting discs from screwfix and go for it!!:D
I know but the last one i bought was seriously cheap like unbranded cheap! I dont buy cheap tools anymore after smashing my knuckles when the draper socket i was using split down the side.:2Mad broke a few of those!
Got a 200pc craftsman socket set from america for about £200 and im well impressed with it, good quality and like snap on has a lifetime guarantee.
If you ever go to the states or know anyone that goes get them to go to sears and bring you some tools!:rollin
The only thing i will say is the craftsman handle on the ratchet is quite uncomforable when trying to undo really stiff bolts.
But so cheap for decent tools i can put up with the uncomfy handle!, this is only half the kit.
Hummm that looks familiar !
just get in with the angle grinder and cut it all back to solid metal
good luck with it though .. looks like you could have fun
i think i would have enjoyed doing mine more if i could have left it in one place all jacked up - but i had to move it down the drive , jack it up , do some work , then jack it down and put it back up the drive
if i could have just left it jacked up - would have probably done it 4 times as quick
keep the pics coming though ;)
Took the skirt off today and was greeted with a huge crack and about a kilo of filla pulled off! It just gets better an better! :guinness

Starting to think this is getting beyond my limited welding skills!:rollin:flamed
JESUS .... good luck with that !!!!
might be better getting another car and swapping the engine over ;) - and its probably quicker aswell
Thats what i was thinking:reallymad
Saw this today and no sunroof:Thumbs-up
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1489106.htm
Only trouble is getting it back here? something to think about anyway:Hammer
Im not sure, might still have a go at fixing it and see if i can get it through MOT.
Its not rust, its simply a way to decrease weight :D SPEEDHOLES FTW :D
ohhh could be the GTX model - that came with no sunroof - and i have to admit - it wont leake if it doesnt have one :D
Its s4 so id have to swap the whole engine and body harness i believe?, that and the fact id have to tow it 200miles home with a ford puma!:Hammerdont know if thats even legal? (with a towing bar thing)
Found yet more filla even worse this time, it looks like the car\'s been in an accident or been off the road at least.
Bent twisted and rotten excellent!!

you sure have your work cut out - good luck
looking at the pic , the year says its an S4 - but its got the S5 front end ( i think )
and if you keep yours - you have some SERIOUS work cut out - i have seen them scrapped for a LOT less :(
**edit**
and yes - it looks like a S4 with the front bumper off a S5
it says that its sold now :(
And its now sold.:2Mad
Im gutted the egi i scrapped a couple of months ago was better than this! typical.
So im on the lookout for a clean s5, white would be nice!
hi guys just spotted this now, have been talking with the guy most of this week and i bought the car last night will be getting it delivered on wednesday. Not sure what i am going to do with it yet to be honest. It was an impulse thing. I may just take the engine and running gear, rebuild and stick it in my egi (i know it isn\'t the easiest thing to do). might break it, might just keep it whole and increase my collect of cars.
But could possibly strip it all down if your interested in the shell.
I know this is what the sills are like.
your getting a nice collection of cars together ;)
i should have bought it really - i only need the gearbox and all assocaiated stuff to make mine into a manual
sills look nice and solid though
yeah, i\'ll have to see what i want to do with it when it gets here, i need a few parts to make mine better, wing mirror, spoiler interior trims, but can swap the bits off my egi on to it to keep it complete.
Depends on how nice it is really.
Sweet, let me know how it goes!:Thumbs-up
ive got a load of egi bits in red, spoilers wings and bumpers if you need instead of white? saying that the wings are a bit battered!
yeah mine is black, so gonna have to spray couple of the bits anyway. Cheers though.
Ok cool, if you do decide to strip it id seriously be interested in the shell if i dont find anything sooner, dont imagine i will though!
ok mate i will have a poke around on wednesday and see what its like and give you a shout.
so what you are really telling us is that you bought the entire car just to get the blanking plate that you needed ;)
yeah that blanking plate is really important to me!!!!
haha i like to do stuff the hard way mate.
your not kidding !!
good luck with the car though .. and i suppose im close enough if you need any help with it ( although knowing your back ground .. i cant see that happening ! )
hi mate got the shell semi stripped at the moment, can send you some pics if your interested in buying it still? is really quite clean, just surface rust that could be rubbed off with a bit of wirewool or paper. Floor seems nice and straight inside. send me your email if you want me to send the pics over.
Bit of an update, no real progress though, pulled it out the garage and took the door off to have a good look and smash off some filler!

With the side skirts on most of the damage is hidden so i guess it\'s not going to matter too much what my welding looks like :rollin
(http://i860.photobucket.com/albums/ab162/1990_fc3s_t2/SDC17785.jpg)
just sell it for spares n get the enfini :p
Not sure i\'d get enough!! :Giggle unless i find a gold bar in there somewhere!
Quote from: L18M;681377just sell it for spares n get the enfini :p
Think it\'s infini not enfini
wonder if this one came to the uk?
http://www.terra2imports.ca/import-japan114368896977854.htm
According to Brian Long it\'s "anfini" :rollin
That looks like a lot of work
Haha yeah loads of work, im just going to bodge it so it\'s good enough for mot.
Can\'t afford a new fc yet and i can\'t go through another summer with a ford puma!! i miss smelling like exhaust fumes :mmmm
wish i had one of those jig things where you can spin the car around! that\'d make life a tad easier.
Wow, mine looked similar (though not as bad) this time last year - daylight through the passenger footwell and all...
Luckily a mechanic father who doesn\'t charge for welding large lumps of metal back on comes in handy now and again!
Although both my rear arches are going to need sorting soon
Got a bit more done, the inside is almost finished just the driver\'s side which is in far better condition and a few bits underneath.
The hardest part was trying to get the curve in the metal, what a pain spent hours hammering it over a solid round steel bar, neighbours must hate me! :Giggle
Dont laugh i know my welding is rather shocking but definatly better than when i started!

looking good there. will be fine with the tii skirts covering it up :)
Yeah should be fine with a slither of filla, got the shape near enough so should\'nt be to much messing.
Buzzing i can see light at the end of this rusty tunnel :wiggle
new battery, tyres and gear oil and i can start it up, that\'ll be a good day, if it starts!!! :Giggle
Weekend spent breathing in body filler dust should really have got some masks! :2Confused
Getting somewhere near now and welding pretty much finished :wiggle
Going to por15 the whole underside, the only thing that bothers me is ive welded up parts that i cant get to with any kind of primer, im thinking now i should spray as much waxoyl in there as i can and maybe get some of that strengthening urethane foam in the sills to get back some rigidity and to stop air getting to the untreated metal?
anyway some poor quality pictures!

Looks like new mate good job :)
Looking good :)
how long did all that take?
Thanks chaps,
It took me quite a while! went through two half kilo spools of mig wire and a few weekends wasted under the car, all be worth it in the end though :D
The welding isn\'t bad - certainly better than mine! And that amount of filler/rust is scary! I\'m glad mine was nothing like that.
As for coating inside - waxoyl = yes, foam = no. The waxoyl will protect the metal, the foam just traps moisture (no matter what it says on the tin).
Waxoyl it is then, anyone ever used the waxoyl high pressure sprayer? might give that a go as i dont think the aerosols will reach the inaccessible bits, could do with dunking the whole car in a vat of the stuff.:2Rolleyes
Ok so here\'s what ive done and whats left to do,
3" turbo back with heat wrapped downpipe
buddy club ecu- not too sure what this is going do yet
ported wastegate
k&n panel filter
apexi safc
new stock exedy clutch
boost and water temp gauges
magnecor kv85 wires- cheers clive & lisa
air pump and acv delete
17" hockenheim alloys- cheers blitz
strut brace- cheers liam
serviced best i can, fuel filter oil coolant and plugs but hopefully going to hayward north for a tune up when the time comes, ignition timing and tps adjustment baffles me.:2Rolleyes
wideband- still to install but got the bung welded in already. (by someone else!):Giggle
walbro 255- still to install
and to do:
boost controller- not sure which yet
blitz ss dump valve
5 qts of redline super lightweight shockproof gear oil
battery
4 new tyres
new thermostat
new discs, got re-con calipers for the front from the egi.
braided brake lines
Didnt realise i had so much left to do  might just get the oil tyres and battery then go for mot, might make it to my first rotorstock that way:)
My god you have somehow put this scrapper back together and now want to modify it... :eek:eek:eek
I just hope you do not live near me for my family sake
Also shame on people here egging you on...
Hardly modified just a few upgrades to bring her up to date:2Rolleyes, and this car was only saved as i couldnt afford a better one and i couldnt bare to scrap another fc.
Saving up for the infini thats waiting somewhere in japan just for me!:driving
I\'m not sure if TRex is being incredibly narrow minded or sarcastic but in admiration of the effort you\'ve put it! I hope the latter...
Personally I think you\'ve done a great job - I HATE rust, and my car wasn\'t as bad as this so I think you should have a gold star :p
Yeah fair play mate-now you\'re ready to take on a rusty FB!:bandit

Apart from what this chap has said (his own words not mine), that car is FDUKed and even a proffesional repairer would scrap it, the structual integerity of it\'s main chassis is extremely damaged and it\'s daft to even repair a 70hp fiesta like that far less a car with a fair bit more energy, that someone will obviously be giving it some iron..
You people need to check yourselves if you believe it was the correct decission to repair this..
And before you answer that, consider if a trap/cut and shut car injured and maimed a member of your family or someone you know..
:(

Jeeeez it wasnt that bad your talking like i cut the car in half an welded it back together.
Maybe it was the wrong decision to save it but personally i don\'t believe it\'s a death trap :D
Il try avoid your family :rollin
Well done, having welded a few in my time I would say looking at what you have done the car is stronger now than it was before,
Done properly there\'s no reason for extensive repairs to be unsafe
A friend of mine made a lot of money years ago with cut n shuts but he used to use the correct drills to remove the spot welds and slide them together and reweld,
O\' my god your thinking, but one of Dave\'s write offs ended up in an accident and Maidstone traffic conducted an investigation into the car and concluded that had the car not been actually stronger from the extra welding the accident would have been a fatality.
I will say however this applies to cars of the Gen 2\' age and older as new new cars are designed to fold up right through the car to absorb energy.
I remember looking at a car (Toyota) for somebody that had a bang in the front, lifting the rear seats and finding that the car had concertinaed all the way back there to absorb energy just as it was designed to do.
It\'s alive! finally got round to getting a new battery and gear oil, jumpered the fuel pump for 10secs and she fired right up. :Party
Idle\'s nice and smooth aswell now its got new plugs and wires unbelievable difference, just rather loud! :evillaugh
next up new tyres, fit the wideband and a good clean then it\'s MOT time might make rotorstock yet!... :3gears-lh

On a side note, anyone know why my camera makes my pictures look like it\'s night time unless i edit them?? flash goes off an they look ok on the camera then look rubbish on photobucket? camera\'s a samsung L100?
Good work bud. Fingers crossed you get her MOT\'d in time for Rotorstock.
awesome work :)
camers: maybe its the setting? make sure its not on macro.
else turn off flash if poss?
i think the biggest prob might be as teh car is white and the main focus on the camera is in the middle it neglects the outside contrast so the centre is the main focus, plus white car, reflects more light so whilst car is bright the rest is dark.
hth :)
Cheers, im still buzzing it started so easily and the new clutch seems good as there was no judder setting off in first although i only went about 4ft with no seats or doors!!
think i sorted the camera, i had it set on auto and it seems to work better on manual, I should read the instructions to see what that actually means!!
Quote from: 1990_fc3s_t2;706963I should read the instructions to see what that actually means!!
