Title: Block off BOV, turbo surge, any good?
Post by: Pumba_GT on February 07, 2010, 11:27:25 PM
Hi,

While cleaning the induction system yesterday, I noticed that the BOV pipe that connects to the Y pipe had been blocked off by a jubilee clip and a bolt. This has caused turbo surge and I can hear the chattering sound while dumping at low rpm. FYI, I just bought the car 1 week ago.

Now the question is, should I connect back a bov instead of letting it blocked? I knew that compressor surge is no good for turbo, or is it doesn\'t matter on a sequential turbo system like the FD?

Your help is so much appreciated.

Regards,
Justin

Plumb it back in else the turbo will be utter wrecked if its not wrecked already, the previous owner of my car disconnected some vac lines so that the BOV only opened every now and then and I had to have the whole turbo rebuilt as the seals and bearings were completly shot.

this isn\'t surge, surge is when the turbo is pushing too much air for the rest of the system and boost escapes back through the compressor. this will usually only happen on WOT/full boost.

it\'s up to you really, i\'d reconnect it simply because Mazda designed the system to work with one. if it was a nice chunky single turbo, however, no BOV is the way to go so you get that cool chatter sound :cool

you are correct, it\'s actualy turbo stall!!
I get this even with a BOV fitted, but only at very very small + boost pressurs, basicaly not enough pressure difference to activate the valve. But yes, I would put one back as you dont want to have this happening when the turbo is pulling 40k rpm!

As mentioned - it\'s compressor stall, not surge :) (And it\'s deffo not wastegate chatter as people insist on calling it!)

As for the damage it does to your tubo - that\'s  matter that\'s debated time and time again. I\'ve done about 50k on 2 seperate T28\'s with no issues whatsoever. here are billions of threads about it.

why do not all turbo cars have them as standard? ;)

No harm at all in putting one back on though :)

Ahh...this one again...still cant decide which side I\'m on! lol

I\'ve got the BOV in....whistles quite a biton part throttle which is annoying...is that because its leaking, or the after market filters not quietening down a standard noise!?

As far as I know all turbo cars have a BOV of some sort, it might be a recirc but it will be installed to protect the turbo.

im pretty sure it was saab that introduced valves to cars as people were taking the turbo cars back saying they were making funny noises and broken without a valve on it...

on my 200 i ran a bov for about 50 miles, the rest was naked and i loved the sound... it didnt kill the turbo or wreck it, also on 5gtt\'s etc ran no bov

thats partially the reason i blocked off mine, its just really annoying when i\'m trying to drive lightly and get a stupid woosh! i\'ve just got to sort the air pump now. thinking of running a 3m hose right to the back of the car, and put it in a box filled with foam! doesn\'t help that its got a wee filter on the end, even tried the small hole but it just changes the noise! anyway bit off topic:Hammer

I understand the "myth" about the potential damage to turbo without a bov. I bought the rex without the bov, so I am looking to put back with a standard bov.

If anyone has one knocking about, please let me know how much plus postage.

Thanks.

I sold my Bov on my single setup, i just couldnt hear it over the chatter so got rid after reading big tubs can take some stick and didnt need a bov. you would hope a tub could take some pressure due to the costing of them

Yes, got the standard recirc valve, used to have a Blitz, but thought I\'d get rid of the tcsshh by putting back the recirc....but no luck, and gained the stupid whistle noise. Anyway, got a SARD on the way, so will put that on to get rid of the leaking whistle, then quieten down the tschh:Thumbsup!

you should be able to get a recirc kit for that?? basicaly pipe it back to the air filters rether than to atmosphear... this will quieten it down a fair bit ;)
