Title: Best Induction Kit for Twins???
Post by: chrisJDM on February 06, 2010, 11:35:06 AM
just done a quick search and found a few threads about them but just want some feedback on which kits are regarded as the best.

there are quite a few to choose from:
greddy
hks
apexi
blitz
etc etc

also would be good to see what options are available fro improving air flow to the filters as ive seen a few scopes before which replace the one which goes to the standard air box, are they any good? which ones are best?

:Thumbsup!

Trouble with the one\'s mentioned is they draw in hot engine bay air of can suck in radiator after cooling air - engine more likely to detonate, these set-up can makes less power than stock.

Best solutions are cold air intakes or modify the stock system to draw air from the side of radiator.  Plenty of information on this site and other US and Aus RX7 sites

Apexi have proven time and time again to be the best combo of flow and filtration :)

I\'m still not convinced that a few degrees intake temp makes that significant a difference when shoved through a turbo compressor, an intercooler, and a few yards of pipework. NA maybe, but on a turbo car I don\'t think it\'s any great shakes unless you are really right on the ragged edge of mapping.

This is from my professional perspective as a web developer...

Apexi FTmfW! Not only are they the best at filtration and flow, they can also be polished up to be all SSSSSHHHHHIIIIIIIINNNNNNEEEEY! Yeah! Shiny things FTMFWtoo! :Thumbs-up

....I spent ages faffing about making ducting and heat shields and gubbins for the airfilters and it made naff all difference to intake temps. Made some proper ducting for the intercooler and BANG 10 to 15 degree reduction to temps at best. Conclusion...a good intercooler with proper ducting is worth any amount of buggering around trying to cool the filters :yes

Yeah! I/C ducting FTMFW even more than the last two MFWs were :Giggle

sounds good i think i need to look into it a bit more, dont really wanna spend too much, the apexi\'s look like a good option, or that petit kit looks good.  Might look to start with at improving the stock system for minimal cost :Thumbsup!

possibly :Thumbsup!

should get it in a couple weeks :yes

liam bring a drill round and we shall drill a load of holes in the stock airbox and see wot happens lol

on a serious not would be good to find some ways of improving the air induction from the front to the filters.  With the Greddy kit i had there was no ducting on anything actually brininging the air onto the filters im sure there was probably quite a bit of hot air being sucked in.  Time to do some research

They\'re really cack at filtering stuff out of the airstream though Liam. There\'s a thread on a Supra forum IIRC somehwere where they tested all the top brands, and the Blitz stainless mesh was even worse at filtration than the bath sponge that masquerades as a filter in HKS/GReddy kits. They might  flow mahoosive amounts of air and make a great noise, but a rotary\'s not like a piston engine where if it sucks in a lump of grit it\'ll just bounce about for a while till it gets spat out an exhaust valve. In a rotary it\'ll be whizzing round your rotor housing at several thousand RPM scoring the hell out of it.

also i might drill some massive holes in the front bumper on the air intake side, like you see on some of the big power skiylines and others

there was a thread that had some plastic sheets that can be moulded to create a custom box. forgot who did that thread.

we can drill some holes in ur exhaust also to make it sound more boy racer to you fit in when u often hang round McD\'s hehe
also slap in some massive subs, neons and some go faster stripes. al this will add another 50bhp :p

cant wait til u get ur fd. will have to come round n check it out :)
think u\'l see ur fd before i see my fc haha

nik: i was thinking is somethijg small enough can fit through the mesh then it would be burnt off, but i guess wrong lol

When I read up about this, some company had done a test using carbon powder and a vacume cleaner and then measured how much was passing through and the amount of air flowing.

HKS were the least effective but produced best airflow,
K&N were good at both
Apexi were the cleanest and had high airflow,

I would go with apexi units, then spend alot of R&D on their products which usualy pays of, I saw mentioned earlier the Blitz units with metal mesh, they give a nice sound but are very poor and cleaning the air.  HTH :burnout

I also happen to have a set of Apexi filters as im hoping to go single (misses leaning over my shoulder ?? lol ) they are in ok nick with some of the mesh that holds the filter a little damaged from where they were sitting and rubbing in engine bay. drop me an email if your interested

Whilst the article comparing the filtration was interesting, I\'ve yet to see anything that actually specifies what size of particle is / is not tolerable coming through the turbos and engine.

Its surely irrelevant if the HKS filters let through \'more\' than the Apexi\'s if they still keep out anything large enough to be an issue...

i moved my rad down about an inch to leave a bit of a gap, glued an adaptor for some 70mm flexi pipe onto my airbox and pointed it towards the gap between the rad and the top bumper support. oh, and a K&N panel!

doesn\'t sound as good as raspy filters, but does the job.

I have the SR Motorsports one.  It sucks air from the front and is enclosed.  Changing filters is a snap, remove 6 screws and you\'re done.  The stock airbox, besides being restrictive is a nightmare to change filters on.  Heven\'t measured the AIT\'s yet but plan on doing that as soon as shes up running again.
