Title: Which exhaust?
Post by: Brighton-Rex on February 04, 2010, 08:45:10 PM
Okay people, the time has come to ditch the standard exhaust system for something a little less restrictive.

Which systems would you guys recommend?

I have seen alot of people with the Blitz Nur spec R but hear this can be a little loud even with the silencer lol, any other brands? HKS etc?

Looking for something that will still give a nice tuned sound but can\'t be too excessive as don\'t want problems at tracks will noise level limits etc.

The car is a late 91 type R, which i assume has a cat but was informed i could remove it quite legally because of the cars age, does this sound correct as qualifies for non cat emissions test at MOT.

I have a PFC ready to go on car at same time so boost spikes etc won\'t be a problem if i do go all out with decat etc.

Any advise would be great

Racing Beat. if ur keeping standard cat, then most exhausts will be quiet enough on track.
plenty of other brands u can get with varying levels of noise - hks do a few, apexi do some, trust...martin at speedlin imports has got a few.
theres a few for sale on fduk to

Yup, Racing Beat would be perfect.
On twins, mine tested at something like 92db with a Tiger centre silencer and Racing Beat Twin rear box, and still make 360bhp on the rollers.

How can an PFC stop boost spikes? lol I got mine custom made, meaning you don\'t have to put up with what manufacturers want to sell but have the exhaust how you want it :)

The boost control function (although basic) on a PFC can be used to control boost spikes. Creep it won\'t help with though.
Freeing up the system could well cause creep (did on mine eventually) so it\'s more that that you need to be aware of - creeping and spiking are two different things. Given that the other things are taken care of, spiking is generally a function of boost control devices, creeping is  generally due to wastegate sizing.

Oh, and I\'d snap Charlie\'s hand off at £95 for an RB system!

is your car an import? i\'ve never been able to find a definitive answer to this although you can normally blag a non-cat test. i read somewhere that they changed the rules so that you may have to get a letter from the manufacturer stating that the car shouldn\'t have to pass the fast idle test, not sure if anyone can confirm that?

i\'m going to keep hold of my cat and air pump, just incase i have to hastily slap it all back on at MOT time :)

Yeah car is an import.

Ok so there are quite a few options, Anyone know if the silencer that comes with the nur spec makes it more acceptable noise wise? Also seen a few hks silent hi power systems, anyone know what these are like?

When I first fitted my nur spec I tried it without the bung for about 5 seconds:eek::rollin.
Much better with the bung, though the neighbours still hate me:Thumbs-up

All exhausts sound terrible with the bung!

As for the Silent Hi Power - it\'s anything but - I swear the Nur spec is actually quieter!

The test for imports between 1989 - 1995 is a basic non cat test 3.5% co2 at idle.
Tho you may still struggle to pass without a working air pump.

Ive got the Nur Spec and tbh i dont find it that loud, I came from a dc2 type R and that was way louder on a 4" magnaflow system.

I find the nur spec has a loud idle but is reasonably quiet on song imho

My FC is a \'91,  running with no cat and no emissions solinoids, only a working air pump, my co% is 0.21% :)

If you still want a Nur Spec I have one for sale and am only down the road.  If you come to the Brighton meet you can hear what a Nur Spec sounds like before you buy.
