Title: Turbo options for a project 13b-REW??
Post by: Jono FD3 on February 01, 2010, 08:35:15 PM
Guys, I\'ve got a project idea in my head which could be a little different. Needs a bit of fabricating & messing around, but done right I think it could be awesome!!

Basicaly I\'m after sujestions on what turbos I could use! what I\'m after is:

Something between the size of a stock turbo (just one of them) & a small single! The blower must be able to handle 1 bar max (so nothing too wild is needed just more air flow) and idealy from a production car & not an after market blower as this will keep the price down!

The theory is to keep the stock mazda primary turbo which will keep the low down power & driveability, and using all the dredded flappy bits to keep it sequential twins @ 4500rpm have a larger secondry turbo come on line giving more top end power (idealy a safe 400bhp or maybe a bit more).

I know there is going to be alot of fabrication work involved, but this doesn\'t worry me as I am going to be doing it all myself, and I will have a spair engine to work everything out on (space & positioning wise)

So... Sujest away guys & girls!!

Cheers
Jono

P.S.
I\'ve got a mint turbo from an FB Elford setup in my room...... would this be too small / big / unreliable?

good luck jono,  it would certainly be a tricky one.  Forget the elford turbo, its way too small.  The problem with using a turbo from a stock car is that the exhaust housings are way too small for a rotaey, even if you are using the stock primary turbo.  Many years ago before anybody had heard of using TO4 turbo\'s in this country i fitted a t3/4 rs500 cosworth turbo to a stock 13b engine,  1st 2nd and 3rd were quick and it had no lag but after that it slowed right down as it just couldnt get rid of the exhaust gasses.

Have you thought about just using a cosmo 20 b unit,  it flows more as the secondary turbo is slightly bigger than the primary,  it would be cheap to buy and you would get all the flaps etc and would just need the manifold modifying or making.

thats what i thought. hows about a TII turbo? or a stock fd one but make it hybrid?

tbh i dont know if a TII tub is bigger than fd or not :p

Why not just save the hassle and have hybrid twins? Should net you the same result.
Complete custom sequential twins could be a nightmare.

it\'s all about the challange though ;)
wouldn\'t something like a Mk3 Supra CT26 or even a skybus GTsT one do it?
I have also been told that the Mitsi Evo tuby is very very good & is good for 1.4 bar!

well the evo turbo is a td05 and we all know how well the td06 works, with the primary turbo aswell should hit 400bhp at a guess.

Specs for the TD05:
Features 1.89" Inducer and 2.68" Exducer
It is ported and has a bigger internal wastaget which supports 380HP and 505CFM
Works with your stock fuel system.
Can Handle up to 25-28PSI
.58 A/R Compressor
Can handle applications of up to 380HP

What are peoples thoughts of putting a TD05 off a subaru impreza on?
Just been looking & they apear to be the same as the Evo ones, and the bonus is... I have a stainless turbo elbow & flange sat in the garage so that will save a bit of time ;)

Sorry but I havent a clueas to what turbos etc to go for but fair play for trying something new and having read quite a few of your DIY threads in the past jono i\'m sure you\'ll do a spot on job. I wish you well with the project, and I hope you keep us all posted bud

hows about fitting sth like the twin turbo kit for fc. think it was r magic that did the manifold, though im sure there was another manufacturer who made a twin turbo manifold for fc.
just throwing some ideas :)

all ideas welcome! yea, saw the twin TD05 manifold on ebay today, but I want to keep the driveability of sequential.... just make it a little hotter ;)

if you are going to use a stock turbo, forget all the jap 4 pot stuff,  the 6pot ones may do it, but compare those to a stock turbo II unit and the exhaust housing is still much bigger on the mazda item, the others just dont flow the same exhaust gases, hence rotaries need a much bigger exhaust.  You can get 500bbhp out a 2.5 inch exhaust on a supra, but you can foget it on a rotary.  I fitted 2 scooby rear boxes (sti) to my FC to try and quieten it down, i lost 120 bhp on the rollers,  i pulled em off while it was on the dyno and got the power back,  they flow 280 bhp each in stock form on an sti i was only running 400 on the fc.

I managed 330 bhp out of a stock turbo II item with a streetport but it couldnt provide much more than about 0.8 bar boost.  You may get 1 bar using the fd primary thrown in the mix

the main challenge is to keep the spool up of the secondry fairly quick which is why I was looking towards the td05, also space to get the new twin setup in there! so as a result I don\'t realy want to be going for anything too big in size!

is there a chart on what turbo sizes get you what bhp on the net for rotaries?? The new engine is going to be ported for the job aswell, so this will help things along a little!
so you think something like the Mk3 supra turbo or the Skybus GTsT single would do the job?

How you gonna get around prespooling the secondary turbo from another car?, are you going to chop up the twin turbos exhaust turbo manifold, and mount the non mazda secondary turbo the same way as the stock secondary one and weld it all up?

how about a super turbo?
not entirely sure how they work, ie supercharger feeds to intake along with the turbo?
but maybe have the supercharger feeding air into the exhaust side of the tub to help spool it at low revs then at higher revs the exhaust from the engine will feed the tub to get it spooling more for bigger power.

(just remembered you wanted to keep it twins but this might spark another idea off and is something different :))

"Super Turbo" seen a few setups like this on a few cars in the US, a small turbo feeding air into the intake of the larger turbo, bit more doable\\easier rather then trying fab up a new twin sequential turbo exhaust housing and far more interesting as well

what size is the system off the supra, i know its sequential, what does that flow?

400bhp is achievable with stock turbos, just wont last forever :(

Plan is to keep the stock promary in the same place, and then almost top mount the second above it (where a single would sit). Still keeping it all sequential, so yea, your correct blizy, going to be chopping appart a stock manifold to get all the componants out of it, then weld them all in to a custom stainless manifold just to be different ;)

I know you can get 400 from stock twins, but then they are pushing 1.2 bar, and last a week!! what I am after is a safe reliable sequential setup which will reach the same figures at alot lower boost..... probably about 0.8 - 0.85 bar as the stock primary will cope at that pressure!

just put a tdo6 on and be done with it as i cant see it working properly dude, if you still wanna scratch your fabrication itch build yourself a manifold from scratch
