Title: FC Turbo 2 shaft play.
Post by: TiddlesRX7 on January 31, 2010, 07:38:44 PM
How much shaft play is acceptable on a stock turbo? Side to side and end float. Just wondering if its time to start saving (even more!).

OK OK I will fit my T88 lol im getting there lol is the shaft play in and out, or just side to side? is the turbo holding stable boost?

The OEM turbo has journel bearings so a bit of play is ok as the oil would take up the play, but only to a point.

Theres a bit side to side, enough for me to start asking questions. End float wasn\'t as bad a little but not what I would call excessive.

How much you selling you OEM one for when you get the monster on?
also can the OEM one be rebuilt with rollor bearings?

i thought roller bearing were a no-no for rotaries as they cant withstand the heat?

Dunno im just asking silly questions! spot the newbie!

You need a 360 degree thrust bearing :) the OEM one is only a 270 degree, plus you need to look for jounal bearing turbos, not ball bearing ones due to the heat that is produced BB turbos can overheat and fail, this is good as journal bearinged turbos are cheaper lol my T88 is jounrnal bearing :)

yep, journal bearing FTW, just pick how much horsepower you want and we can all spec you a turbo to match it

rotarys seem to love it, should go well on a 13b, 13000rpm on methanol, why are we even debating this, mitch tell your stock turbo friend he needs an upgrade!

TBH I just want to swap for another stock one for now as Im not botherd about making much BHP. Plus Im quite interested into how much you can get out of a stock ish set up. Although if a cheap hybrid came up then I would be very very tempted ;)

Thats what im about to find out :) I too am interested to see what the stock one can put out, im guessing 280-300ish, will be dropping in the larger secondaries to make sure it doesn\'t run lean!

Just need to bolt on the uprated HKS actuator so I can actually boost past stock levels (the OEM actuator can\'t cope whatsoever lol)

Yep thats the puppy lol although its a quad rotor lol so a 26B and not a 13B :yes

How do you mean? Up untill recently mine has been running between 10-12PSI ok. I know its not ideal but it does it. It\'s been like that for at least 4 years.

The intake has the HUGE RE-A filter on it, meaning air has no issue getting into the turbo, the turbo itself has 360 thrust bearings and new seals so it spins freely, the wastegate is also ported and the custom cat back system offers no back pressure and is uber free flowing, the amount of exhaust gas the turbo is flowing the wastegate is just getting pushed open as the actuator can\'t hold back the flow of exhaust lol I can get to about 0.5 bar but thats it, mind you I get instant spool as my electronic boost controller keeps (well trys to keep) the wastegate closed as long as possible to give the quickest spool. The porting has been done really well so as soon as the exhaust pushes the wastegate open the turbo doesn\'t spool at all, I have managed to get it to 6k rpm accelerating with 0 bar of boost lol Before the turbo\'s wastegate was ported the exhaust and intake setup was so good it boost spiked to 0.9 bar on the 5psi wastegate spring with the EBC turned off lol It was like...hmm yeah it needs porting lol

Sounds like mine! It spools up @ not much over 3k to around about 1bar then it drops off as the revs increase. I\'ve limited it now with the boost controller but what I don\'t get is why its started doing it all of a sudden. I\'ve owned the car for 3 years and its only started doing it since christmas ( it did always boost to around 11 maybe 12PSI). Im blaming the crappy manual boost controller that was on the car when I got it and have now binned. It must have gone faulty. Unless my actuator is sticking or something stupid like that.

The actuator is getting worn, so can\'t cope with the extra pressure above stock, don\'t forget its only ment for 0.6 bar lol

HKS do a bolt on uprated actuator that is adjustable so the boost can be set correctly, might be an idea to get one of those :) mine boosts, but doesn\'t hold boost due to the OEM actuator lol

Perhaps set it to 0.6 bar and see if you can hold the boost, if you can, its probably just the actuator that is being worn
