Title: Storing my RX7….
Post by: waqas_RX7 on January 28, 2010, 03:51:03 PM
Hi Guys/Girls,

Basically I am thinking of taking my FD RX-7 off road this week, for maybe a few months.

Is there a guide of any sort of things to do, and things to watch out for, taking in mind mine is a Single Turbo making 356hp, and may be parked on my hill drive, as that is the only real secure place I think is available.

Please advise ;)

Thanks,
Waqas

Nothing particularly mate:

I left mine in my garage for 4 months last summer and it started first time.

If you\'re being pedantic -

1) Disconnect battery (if it doesnt affect alarm)
2) Do the quick shut-off procedure (hold the engine at 3k revs, turn off, put foot to floor) this will evacuate any fuel from engine (if fuel is left in for any length of time it can eat seals)
3) Leave the handbrake off if possible - if on a hill put it off and on every week or so to stop it seizing.
4) Tyres can crack if left deflated so either overinflate them or rock car back and forward every few weeks to stop it happening.

As per Trotter, we leave our cars in garage from October till April.

we have them on Accumate battery conditioners to keep them topped up, tyres are slightly over inflated to help prevent flat spots and the wheels are choked so we can leave the handbrake off. Don\'t worry about starting every couple of weeks as this may do more harm, but just squirt a little oil down the spark plug hole to lube it before you start her up again!

To add to that when starting....

Bear in mind that fuel can go \'bad\'. Long-term storage can cause several things - condensation of water vapour in the tank (lower flammability), evaporation of lighter components (lower octane rating), oxidation (causes gunge and all sorts of horrible things). Although hi-spec fuels like V-Power etc are developed to guard against this, it happens eventually. Some people advocate dumping in a bottle of fuel stabiliser before storage. I didn\'t and she started fine, very smoky, but fine!!

Also, when moving for first time, a wee bit revs and let the clutch out should be enough to unseize the discs and pads. If you don\'t wanna bother with this - just get a mate and roll her backwards and forwards a few times every other week with the ignition off.

Also, might wanna wait a bit longer than normal to let her warm up before booting it on first run. Hoses and stuff can dry up if left unused over time and too much stress too quickly could cause ruptures.

When I store mine over winter I just put her in the garage and take the battery off, don\'t put the hand brake on and choke the rear wheels the floor has carpet and rubber mates to stop flat spots. When I come to take her out again in Feb for the MOT I change the oil and filter new plugs and clean the air filter out (K&N Panel). Check the voltage on the battery reconnect it and connect put my jump pack for some extra kick and fires up first time :Thumbsup!.

Take her for a steady run 10 to 20mile and fill up with new fuel then check every thing is still working OK water temp not high oil pressure OK boosting correctly on the twins. Wash it then back in the garage till the MOT.

Good tip above quick shut down never done this and been fine.
