Title: 2-Stroke oil in the fuel tank?
Post by: MiniMike16V on January 21, 2010, 09:10:54 PM
Heard a few stories about people adding 2-stroke oil to their fuel.. Is this a good idea or a bad idea? Also, on an NA FC would higher octane fuel be worth the money or keep using the standard Shell?

I\'ve done it in the past when I know I\'m gonna be stressing the engine (track days/drag strip etc). As long as you don\'t add too much I don\'t see a problem with it.

Some people put 2 stroke in as premix as they\'ve taken out the oil metering pumps.
I\'ll be doing this when i get my car running again as i\'ve taken the pumps out

Putting 2 stroke in the fuel is a good idea, as if the OMP fails the engine will last for about 10 seconds lol

I actually run a seperate 2 stroke tank (1Ltr) as I have an adapter that bypasses the stock engine oil supply and uses the supply from my 2 stroke tank. I can now run good quality oil and not rely on mineral oil.  2 Stroke oil burns cleaner, adding a bit in the tank on top of the standard system is never a bad thing but you do not need much at all.

I\'m running the same device as Pete, and can say after stripping the engine down after a year of running it and doing about 15000 miles on it the engine was in good shape.  This really does work. :cool

It uses the 2 stroke at about 1L per 1000 miles, sometimes less if you aren\'t hoofing it - which is exactly the oil usage rate Mazda say in the FSM.  The good point is you don\'t have to faff about pre mixing, and you haven\'t got 2 stroke in the fuel system that might (although no proof) clog filters and injectors.

As for the octane on the NA - unless you are going to advance the timing to take full advantage (and thus rule out running on lower octane) then its not worth it.  TBH - its just not worth it! :wave

Where do you get the 2 stroke oil from btw guys? The cheapy stuff from halfrauds is just for lawn mowers etc - I\'m guessing any real motor factors will do it though?

I hate the fact that if you ever need anything car related these days, it tends to be easier to pop to Halfrauds, because they\'re rubbish and don\'t know what they\'re on about :(

Prof gets some marine 2 stroke, I am not sure where from though, try and get some marine 2 stroke as it is ment for engines that are under high RPM all the time, so works better for performance engines than a lawnmower :D

The consensus I got as to which oil when I researched this was Millers KB 2T.
Got mine at a discounted price which more than covered the carriage. Got 5litres, will last till about 2015 at my low mileage per year.
Woodcote Automotive.....New address Bexton Lane, Knutsford, WA16 9AE.  Tel Robin Longdon on 01565 653658. robin at woodcoteauto dot co dot uk.

Use this in the FB (12A) as a back up in case the OMP breaks or doesn\'t work well. Car runs great with both lots of lube going in (OMP and premix). Smokes for about 30 seconds on cold start up.

I mix at 250:1 ie 80ml into 20 litres of fuel. That\'s not a very high mix because my OMP is still in action. I think it increases to about 100:1 if your OMP is missing.

High Octane Fuel - is it worth it? Costs about 5% more and you can get up to 10% more mileage but caution.....a little cooking pot Clio doesn\'t benefit like a high powered Jag or a car like that, Trial and error and monitor your varying consumption.

for premixing oil in the system...use 1 ounce of oil per gallon of fuel, with 2 stroke, and Prof follows a similar vein to myself on this with using marine 2 stroke....but you can also run Kart oil use 3/4 of an ounce per gallon of fuel.

I have around 200 1ltr bottles of Mobil 1 2Stroke oil if anybody wants some for a decent price.

The stuff I use is Quicksilver Premium 2 stoke outboard - TC-W3.

It\'s a wierd torquoise blue colour :cheers

You can get it at most boatyards or marine shops, and probably anywhere with water sports (fnah fnah) facilities.

I think that one of the reasons that OMP\'s can fail is that the engine oil can qet quick thick and contaminated if oil changes aren\'t frequent, and the stock setup relies on the engine oil being drawn into the OMP. Since it\'s not fresh oil, it can bring crud in with it which can clog the OMP and prevent it from turning smoothly. On the later cars (TII\'s and FD\'s), the OMP is driven by a small stepper motor, and this can fail.

I know when I took mine off to clean it before going 2 stroke it was a bit grubbed up. Taking it off the last time it was almost like new inside - as it only ever sees fresh oil with these bypass adaptors. It\'s quite possible that if it gets clogged up the stepper can burn out - meaning you have no working oil metering pump, and your rotors aren\'t getting lubricated properly. On the later FC\'s this can also blow the transistors in the ECU that control the stepper - so even if you replace the OMP it still isn\'t working.

The latest Renesis engines in the RX8 use 3 injectors per rotor and 2 oil metering pumps

Can you use 2 stroke motorcycle oil in the petrol tank and bin the Mazda oil injection stuff then ? I\'ve got a 2 stroke RS250 motorbike and i use Castrol TTS oil and it smells soooooo good . It would be great if my car smelt like my bike . :Thumbsup!

depends on the ECU you are using. I know the S5 TII\'s OMP sends a signal to the standard ECU and if it fails the car will not run. I run a Apexi and that still uses it but I can however turn up or down the oil used by altering the values with my datalogit at certain rev values.
There are various ways you can fool the standard ECU but a bit of research is needed here though.

Apic of the adapter which I think can only be bought from the USA. Its what the aeromotive chaps use.

Like Pete said - the Series 5 FC\'s (later models) and the FD\'s had an electric OMP - to totally eliminate these you\'d need to run a standalone ECU.

You can mechanically remove it from the engine, but leave it connected out of the way somewhere - provided the stepper motor and it\'s position sensing variable resistor are still linked and electrically connected it won\'t throw error codes.

There was a guy in the US working on a circuit to fool the ECU completely - allowing total removal with a stock ECU.

The thing is, the OMP adjusts oiling to suit engine load and speed - if you replace it with premixing - it\'s only going to be \'right\' at one particular load setting.

The thing is i don\'t really want all the standard oil injection gubbins on mine if possible . It would be much better for me if i could use pre-mixed 2 stroke oil instead of metered engine oil for rotor tip lubrication .
