Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: 600gaz on January 17, 2010, 02:14:34 AM
Hi chaps , it\'s not a Mazda i\'m affraid but a rear engine 1970 Fiat 600 peasant mobile (usually found taking chickens down to the market in 3rd world countries) !!!!! :rollin
I\'m new to the world of rotary power but i\'ve spoke to some nice people about engines and things over the last few weeks and it all seems very cool .
The car will be a street legal and should be around 600 kilos in weight as it\'s very small . It\'s having 1000TCR Abarth arches with 7x 13 inch wheels on the front and 8.5x13 inch wheels on the rear . Tyres will be Avon CR500\'s as used on the latest Caterham Superlite R500 model .
The 13B turbo rotary engine will be out the back mounted to a G50 Porsche 911 transaxle , Porsche drive shafts , Porsche/mazda flywheel with Porsche clutch etc all mated to a Porsche/Fiat hybrid hub set up . The engine will be a big single turbo affair with aftermarket ECU , fuel injection , charge cooler , etc etc . Power will be 350-550bhp depending on how brave i\'m feeling once it\'s working , lol . Even at 300bhp it will be scary but 500bhp should blast past superbikes for fun (833bhp per ton !!!!)  :WaveBye .
I won\'t bore you all too much yet as the bodyshell is still undergoing rust removal but i\'ll post up a few pics as it matures . I\'m hoping it will be finished inside the next 2 years but it might take 10 !!!!!

Here\'s what a Fiat Abarth 600 1000TCR looks like . Mine will look like this when it\'s done but instead of 100bhp it may have 500 !!!! :Thumbsup!

Don\'t laugh but here\'s what a £200 one looks like !!!!! If you\'re scared of rust then look away now as i have some grim pics to post up later . Almost everything from the door handles down is rotten but panels are cheap and easy to get so it\'s no problem for my mates at the bodyshop to fix .

Time to get chopping !!!! Floors , inner sills , outer sills , wings , front panel , flitch repairs , "A" post Repairs , Rear tubs , rear bulkhead mods , etc etc you get the picture . I need the shell to be strong so we\'re fixing everything and then fitting a full roll cage etc . There\'s Group 4 Abarth suspension mods to follow as well so it will handle very well i hope and lay rubber for 4x gears !!!!! :chat

Here\'s a few rusty pictures for now , i have loads :2Rolleyes .

This is a great pic of a 10 second UK Fiat 600 . This car has a 2.3 litre VW Beetle engine with gas . It\'s had the roof chopped/lowered but apart from that the bodies stock . It\'s not even got extended rear arches so runs 10\'s on narrow rims with slicks , Top motor :Thumbs-up.  If mine hooks up like that then i\'ll need new pants !!!

Both floors and outer drivers sill fitted , the sandy coloured floor section is a genuine 1960\'s Fiat panel and the black drivers side floor is a modern repro panel .

I ....ed up the last post as it\'s the passenger side sill being fitted and not the drivers side one (right hand drive) . Here\'s the sill being lined up before the rear arches were cut off .

Rear flared arch being offered up then the excess standard arch was chopped off . Then the inner wheel arch tub was chopped out and extended to meet the cut back rear wing to give max tyre clearance .

Hi chaps , i\'ve had a few internet problems of late but all working again . The bodyshell has progressed some more and i\'ll post some pics up later . I\'ve got a Jaydee 500+bhp engine now which i bought off Ed-13B last weekend so the car should be quite nippy !!!!! :chat
I need to save some money/sell something and then get a Porsche 911 gearbox . Once this is done we can join the rotary motor to the 911 box and fit them into the shell . :)

Quote from: jakeb;682469update? I just picked up a fiat 500 and debating what route to go.
Well depending on what you want it for then the following are all what i thought of when i was deciding .

1= Renault 5 Gordini turbo engine and transaxle . 200-250bhp
2= Hayabusa engine and Hayabusa sequenetial box . 170bhp or 300+bhp with a turbo .
3= 20v 1.8 turbo vw/audi engine with vw passat/audi transaxle . 200-350bhp
4= 2.3 race vw beetle engine and rancho gearbox . 210-230bhp .
5= subaru turbo engine onto subaru gearbox converted to 2 wheel drive . 250-400bhp
6= cosworth sierra turbo engine onto renault un1 transaxle . 250-500bhp

options 1,2,3,4 and 5 will all fit easyish but 6 is too long and sticks out the back too much . Also the rotary motor is cheaper to get high power from and very small so that\'s why i picked it . Decisions decisions :)

Cheers mate , i think it might end up being about 900bhp per ton now !!!!!! :2eek :2eek :2eek . Hoping to run in the 10\'s on street rubber which should be on the cards as the engine is in the back aiding traction and the car is going to be light .

Thanks to everyone for taking an interest in my project , i\'ll take some more pics of the bodyshell and of the Jaydee 13B-REW engine next week . The engine was from Ed Roberts\' very tasty RX7 FD car and has a large street port , bendy rotor seals etc and was on 1.2bar of boost with a T88 turbo and water injection .
I saw a black RX7 FD with a few stickers on it in Sutton this evening and foooooook me was it loud . Sounded like a bridge port when ticking over (braaaap braaaaap) so seeing that made my smile . Wifey weren\'t impressed with the racket from it though !!!!! :Thumbsup!

Hi folks , sorry for the lack of updates but the bodyshell has not been finished yet so i can\'t get on with much else . My mates doing the resto in between jobs when he gets time so things move slowly as he\'s always busy .
Works also been slow for me this year so not had much spare cash too buy anything else either but things are looking up now .
I\'ve got a Renault UN1 transaxle to use instead of a Porsche 911 one now as it\'s alot cheaper this way and seeing as the car will be very light i think the Porsche one would be over kill anyway .
I\'m going to need someone to get the gearbox/flywheel/clutch made up and working with the rotary engine so does anyone know a decent firm/engineering place that they can recommend ? Cheers .

Ok the ball\'s rolling again and the boys have finished welding up the rust in the rear end and are now uprating the front suspension mounting points ready for the switch from a transverse leaf spring to coilovers etc .
We\'re trial fitting the gearbox this week as well so hopefully it will fit between the chassis rails with some minor floor/bulkhead chopping or else i\'ll need a re-think or have to use a rear spaceframe set up or something .
I don\'t want a space frame of any sort as this will turn it from a proper looking car into a kit car thingy so will try to avoid this if possible .
Also i\'m running the full 500+bhp now and not a low lag smaller turbo as i know i\'ll get bored and have to change it later anyway , lol .
Should be around 900bhp per ton and run 150mph terminals at the drag strip according to the computer calc programme i used . Supercars move over !!!! :Thumbsup!

Post by: 600gaz on November 23, 2011, 07:57:21 PM
Ha Ha , sounds like a great club !!! Rear engine cars always launch harder than anything else so if you\'ve ever seen a full monty Beetle in action then you\'ll know what i mean . Mine is alot lighter and more powerfull than a turbo VW aircooled engine conversion i would have thought so it could run some mental times if all goes well .
My mate has a mid-engine 450bhp subaru powered mk1 Fiesta and that easy ran 10.2secs at 140mph on street rubber at Santa Pod and mine looks like a small kids toy parked next to it !!!! lol

lol , wheelie bars about 6 foot long is the norm on the short stumpy motors i\'ve seen before . Alot of the VW beetles run without them and pull huge wheelies for 2 gears so i might give that a go first or put 4x bags of cement in the front . :D
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: 600gaz on November 25, 2011, 06:41:52 PM
Had a very quick measure up ready for the gearbox fitting and the casing is hitting the rear suspension mounts so these will need chopping off and maybe the rear chassis rails moving it seems :2Rolleyes . This means i\'ll have to re-design the rear suspension or get a sequential gearbox which will be smaller .
That\'s the problem when using a small car and replacing the small bits with big bits . Could be easier too cut the whole rear floor section out and spaceframe it but i will resist for now and try to think of something clever . Pics later . :yes

Can you move the engine back a bit to clear the suspension?
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: 600gaz on November 25, 2011, 07:11:56 PM
I need the driveshaft outlets (on the side of the gearbox) roughly centre of the rear wheel arches in an ideal world and i\'m not sure of the max angle a driveshaft can be at if i move the gearbox backwards  .
I\'ve got tons of room lengthways for the engine so it could all move backwards if the driveshaft angle isn\'t critical . Need to find out before the airsaw comes out , lol . :chat
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: Grant Monkhouse on November 25, 2011, 07:20:47 PM
I would imagine some of the beetle guys would know about how far things can move back before going too far.

Always go for the easiest solution before the good old chop chop ;) :D

I\'ll check out some race beetle rear suspension set ups later i think . We had a porsche 911 on the ramp for a look and the driveshafts are almost in line with the wheel centre line so i\'m sure that this would be desirable if possible . :)

Minor update : Ordered a Turbonetics turbo today thanks to EdRX7 . Went for a 73mm compressor wheel with a 1.1 exhaust housing so it should spool fast-ish with the large street port yet still have a top end power rush . Probably run about 1.3 bar of boost too start with and just put a lump of wood under the throttle peddle until i get used to it !!!! lol .
Still waiting for the last bit of welding to be done (minor) and then it\'s off to a race car fabrication shop for a roll cage and chassis build . Hopefully they can chop the rear floor pan and chassis rails out (the bit under the back seat) , make the tube frame etc and then weld all the original panels back in around it so it looks stock when you look through the wndows . That\'s the plan anyway . :Thumbsup!

Took a few pics yesterday so here they are . Not very exicting though . Bodyshell is now rust free and ready to go to the chassis shop next but they have a waiting list . Seeing them next Saturday hopefully to get a definate date for the work to begin .
After a chat with them they reckon the car will run in the 9\'s so it needs to be safe and rigid too stop it breaking in half on a full throttle launch !!!
At present i think i\'m going for a lightweight weld in 8 point cage , new rear anti-squat suspension design tied into the rear cage and a new front end design with the suspension and steering tied into the cage . So basically a full spaceframe inside the original bodyshell so it still looks normal to the untrained eye . :Giggle

What size charge cooler are you going be using? Volume of water is key to a CC I should imagine with yours being rear engined that you can put the CC rad at the front of your car with the pipes running from the CC to the rad.

Yes CC rad up front and heat exchanger core on the rear bulkhead most likely .

I went to the hot rod/chassis shop today and the car\'s booked in for March . This thread will start getting interesting soon then , lol .
It\'s going to be the nuts with a one off chassis design by the master Chris Isaacs .

The hole could be used for different things but i think it\'s there for a vacuum take off for boost control/wastegate etc .
My 9 inch wide rear wheels should be here next week so i\'ll post some pics up of them when they turn up .
The next pictures of the car will be when it\'s at the hot rod/chassis shop having the chrome-molly cage + tube frame conversion . I\'m having it slammed on it\'s arse with a nice low ride height so it\'s going too look mean scrapping the tarmac with a big fat shiney turbo hanging out the back . :Thumbsup!

Depends on what you want and what material .
A top notch multi-point FIA Chrome-molly lightweight tig welded job is £2000 (as found on a pro-mod drag car etc) .
A C.D.S. one that weighs a ton is £800-£1000 and won\'t be as strong or safe .

awesome stuff, i think people will realise that drag racing is just as much about how a car is setup aswell as how much power it produces to good times.

what breaks are you using on this as you havent got a lot of weight to stop but you have got enough power to turn the speedo to triple digits in something so small so quick?

besides the parachute that is:Laugh:Laugh

I\'m using discs all round with standard ford sierra rear discs and aftermarket 275mm front discs with 6 pot calipers .
He\'s making the chassis so that it can corner hard as well as launch hard as i don\'t just want a drag car but an all-rounder . He\'s also leaving room at the rear so that i could run a 3x rotor engine at a later date if i wanted .
All the work will meet FIA euro drag racing regs so it could run in the Street eliminater etc etc if required . Parked next too mine in his workshop is a 3000bhp pro-mod and a 1400bhp pick up truck so mines only a little toy compared to those , lol .
Real fast quarter mile times are about power to weight ratio and traction/set up mostly . The more power you have the more important the set up is or else you just wheelspin . It\'s all interesting stuff when you look into it (well i think so) lol .

There is a green dodge Plymouth with twin turbos, it ran last year, on the first run it did it had huge tyre shake but still ran a terminal speed of 230 I think!!!!!! It has 2 precision 102mm turbos on it!! Build around 20psi on the start line, any more and it gets tyre shake and the driver goes dizzy!! Hahaha. I asked the driver whilst they were lining up for qualifying,

A set of tyres for a pro mod is 2-3grand and they could use a set in one meet. The engines get rebuilt at a cost of 40,000 every time. If I had the money I would get my licence and a car to compete in pro mod. Where\'s my lotto ticket??

Hi Jay , he reckons the car will fly straight and true as he\'s done a full suspension design from scratch . He\'s junked all the stock parts so started again with a blank canvas using a computer cad design showing full suspension geometry at ride height and once compressed etc etc .

Jay his prices are very resonable (cheaper than plasters and mechanics , etc, lol) so let me know what you\'re thinking of having and i\'ll ask him for you . He\'s a top bloke , very nice to deal with and a real expert chassis craftsman .
He designs and makes all chassis , all suspension parts , exhaust manifolds for turbos and external wastgates etc , circuit cars , drag cars , hillclimb cars , parachute set ups , wheelie bars , engine mounts , gearbox mounts , sheet metal in steel or alloy , tig welding etc etc . He\'s done some work on Gary Goodings RX7 tube chassis so would be up for it i\'m sure .
The biggest cost is the materials so chossing CDS tube over Chrome-moly tube is alot cheaper as it costs half the price . The only difference is the strength and extra weight difference as Chrome-moly is alot lighter and stronger .

3root wide tubs on your car would require you bolting 2 cars together.

I will see where I go with my car because if I did go for tubs and a cage I might as well do the whole shabbang and back half it but that would be a while away, I would also want to get a proper gear box for that setup so costs would be near 10,000.

Enough about my car, looking forward to more chassis pictures of yours.

The alloy adaptor plate and the engine and gearbox are solid mounted into the car as this makes it part of the chassis . Also it stops the casings moving/flexing and should stop them breaking as easy .
The gearbox is a Renault UN1 transaxle . It\'s in lots of things such as Renault alpines , turbo 2 , traffic vans , 25\'s , 21 turbos , Lotus Espirts , etc etc . They are not bad strength wise and quite light and pretty cheap so that\'s why i used one instead of a Porsche one .

Awsome build so far. I can\'t wait to see it finished..I have just bought a rust bucket 600 as well and will be doing to 1000TCR look. When you mounted the rear arches, would it cover up any of the rust area\'s? Also where did you source the mini light wheels? Are they 4 x 98?. I am more than likely go for the  Cromodora 7 and 8\'s but will wait till I decide what motor to put in it.

Hi mate . The extended rear arches will cover up the usual rust patches so you can just chop them out too suit your rear wheels . I\'m using a Ford stud pattern but they will drill the wheels too suit any PCD when you order them . Got mine from Midland wheels as they are a Minilite dealer . 9x13\'s cost around £150 each but they sell copies for alot less . :)

Thats how you can get 9\'s! It never occurred to me to change the stud pattern. The replica\'s from midland wheels are quite cheap, I was actually really suprised at how greater value they where , but as usual shipping will kill it.
Thats great news about the arches, means I might save some money on repair panels!

lol , that\'s why i had the whole running gear changed and the whole rear end chopped out . The fiat abarth bits would have cost a fortune and it would have still been slow so now i have a custom one off tube chassis with cheap replacement parts for half the price and no rust . :D

Saftey cell taking shape now . This also ties in the suspension etc to the bodyshell too make is super rigid . :)

Well my time slot is up at the chassis shop so i\'m picking the car up next weekend and bringing it home . He\'s got a few jobs already booked in and then it will be going back down there at the end of the year for the front end to be done etc . He\'s just doing a marathon welding session around all the tube joints and getting it sitting on it\'s wheels before i collect it .
In the meantime i shall be collecting a few more parts for it hopefully . :)

Top work, how much has this cost so far? Iv got a bit of cash at the moment but don\'t think I could justify spending it on my car to the gf:(

What work are you doing at the front? Chop the standard stuff and tube it?
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: 600gaz on August 05, 2012, 06:17:59 PM
The front end is keeping the Fiat inner wings etc but i\'m junking all the other stock parts and getting a tubed front housing the new suspension and new steering design .
Prices differ from job to job and mine\'s had custom made wishbones , a roll cage/saftey cell and custom designed space framed rear end all complete with body fabrication (rear floor , turrets , inner tubs , wheelie bars etc) .
I could have used off the shelf bits (wishbones , hub carriers , shocks etc) and used cheaper CDS tube and saved quite a bit of cash .
On mine he\'s redesigned the whole car on a motorsport CAD program too take the new power level so a fair bit of the cost is in R+D . No point having the power and then just wobbling all over the place wheelspinnng whilst dodging the armco at 140mph !!!! lol .
I\'ll probably have a complete rolling lightweight one off race car tube chassis for under 7 grand (and no rust as that all got chopped out at the same time) .
A normal RX7 type car would cost less as they are already set up for rotary turbo power and won\'t need everything redesigned but as mine was a 1960\'s 600cc 50mph town car everything was scrap .
The only advantage i had was that it only cost £200 for the Fiat and not £5000+ so mine should still work out cheap in the end . Plus it will be alot more mental compared to normal cars as it\'s rear engined and very small , this helps traction and ups the power to weight ratio/acceleration . :cool

Picked the car up today as my timeslot at the chassis shop was up . It\'s going back around December time hopefully to get the front end done , exhaust , wheelie bars , inner rear sheet metal work etc etc .
The rear coil over shocks were custom made too suit the car and the springs are 220ibls . Rotary power fits in the back a treat and is very low in the chassis so should be great for the handling .
It\'s fooooooookin light so far , i can push it with one finger so with 500+bhp pushing it should be rapido . :Thumbsup!

Great, im really lookin forward to any updates :)

Hope its okay that i post a pic here?
Here is where i stopped cutting yesterday... not sure if i should just remove everything and make a new fender, or just cut it clean and make a wider fender from there. Tires will be 26x6-15".

Edit:  it looks like you cut it all off on your car, but im keeping the stock look from the outside (no abarth fender), do you think i could still cut away everything on the inside as long as i take it easy on last part of it?
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: 600gaz on October 05, 2012, 01:33:27 PM
If you don\'t want wider arches but alot wider rear wheels then the wheels will need to move inwards so the extra wheel width can be fitted . This is ok for drag racing but will probably :censored::censored::censored::censored: up the cornering ability so you have too decide from day 1 .
You could get a cardboard template of the wheel width you want and then just extend the inner wheel arch tub off the original so that it covers the tyre etc . Don\'t forget to allow for the proposed ride height and suspension movement or else the tyres will fould the tub .
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: Dirt on October 07, 2012, 06:08:38 PM
It for dragracing only, so im going to have the wheels inside the stock body.
Anyway, since you have already cut out that much... do you need to make the body stiffer in any way?
My is pretty "wobly" already :2Confused
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: Grant Monkhouse on October 07, 2012, 06:53:20 PM
If I was you I would just get some light weight round bar and bend it to the shape of the Wing and weld it in. W
Should stop it flopping around
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: 600gaz on October 07, 2012, 06:54:19 PM
Yes you need a full welded in cage picking up all the main suspension load points or else it will wobble and flex like mad . You can see mine in the pics .
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: Dirt on October 10, 2012, 06:54:03 AM
Yeah, its your fault that i cut out that much..haha :D Your build is my inspiration.
What i actually wanted to ask is if you needed to make the rear of the body stiffer? Seems like your rear half is not tied into the cage.. and i guess it will woble pretty much, or maybe not?
My cage will be something like yours actually.

(sorry about my not so good english)
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: 600gaz on October 10, 2012, 04:17:11 PM
Once you re-make and weld in the rear tubs then the outer bodywork is stiff again afterwards as they tie the floorpan and the rear wings together .

Post by: 600gaz on January 29, 2013, 12:39:53 AM
Not too bad really , under a grand for the lot which is pretty cheap for proper decent motorsport bits . I could have saved a bit on the front brakes and used smaller calipers as the cars so light but didn\'t fancy trying to stop it with cold brakes from 150mph at the end of a drag strip so went for the bigger ones .
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project

The brake company have managed too squeeze the big calipers and 270mm discs inside a 13\'s rim now so i\'m using those instead of the 265mm ones as it\'s the same price anway . Result . Pics when they turn up . :cool

Brakes now upto 275mm and maybe even 280mm once final assembly is complete . Also getting all alloy CNC uprights and hub assembly made by them as alot lighter than stock Ford bits which weigh a ton . Should be around 3 weeks before it all turns up but the wheels and tyres are here already . :mmmm

Cheers Chaps . After some head scratching we\'ve decided too mount the turbo onto the chassis with a small frame too hold the weight and then make a one-off tubular exhaust manifold to it\'s new positon . Exhaust side will face towards bulkhead and air filter side will face outwards (save burning people when they look in the back) . Inlet will run across bulkhead into charge cooler and then into throttle body (hope that makes sense) .
I need too speak to Jaydee and Ed and get their input on external wastegate size and throttle body/inlet pipe sizes etc etc .
It\'s getting to the exciting bit now so i can feel a bank loan comming on so i can get it driving sooner !!!! ha ha :Giggle

Keep the turbo piping the same size as the turbo outlet, but fit as big as possible charge cooler for ultimate cooling.

Where are you getting the cc from?
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: 600gaz on March 11, 2013, 03:05:32 PM
Using one of those AVT charge coolers like the one on yours Grant . They do a complete universal kit as well which is handy .
Need a fuel rail , injectors and throttle body soon as well as we might need to lower the inlet manifold down a bit too make more room and don\'t know how much room we have ? Do they run 2 or 4 injectors for 500+bhp ?
Title: Turbo rotary Fiat 600 project
Post by: colum on March 11, 2013, 03:31:29 PM
some great fab work there dude :)

you\'ll need 4 injectors no matter what to get it to drive smoothly

Yeh the kits are prety damn good, comes with everything you need instead of sourcing bits here and there, I remember you saying the CC rad is going at the front of the car?

Might I suggest running the CC water pipes through the car, that way you can avoid getting them damaged.

Yes charge cooler rad is going up the front in the air dam/front spoiler , water pipes run through tunnel inside the car with the gear linkage bits etc . Engine rad goes up front as well and will be fed cold air through front spolier and then ducted out the bonnet . Should work ok .

Yes wheelie bar is essential in rear engine car and even in some powerfull front engine ones on drag slicks . They have to be exactly the right length or else they lever the car\'s rear wheels off the ground and make it bounce instead of wheeling (defeats the object) so not as simple as they look . Mine will be on a frame that i can unbolt for street use incase Plod takes a dim view of any old ladies tripping over them etc , lol .

150 mph terminal speed requires a Parachute under NHRA rules which is the American Governing Body.  I believe the FIA and MSA mirror these but I cannot find the specific regulations in either of their rule books.  I would fit one.

I used to run wheelie bars on my strip/street mustang years ago on the road but sadly things are not so lenient now, only time the police came near it was just out of interest for the car rather than its legality, staggering I didn\'t get nicked for noise, boy it was LOUD, crazy for the road really looking back, blimey the thing used to sit and rock on tick over due to its lerry cam :D

Yes i\'d probably have somebody sue me for tripping over them in this day and age . . I could bring it too a show later this year i suppose in it\'s unfinished state . Good idea that .

Will you not get issues with flex between the turbo and the engine. May be a silly question but the motor mounted be on solid fixings. Not sure if you will crack the manifold over time.

The camero is a 10 litre all alloy pro-street special , must be £100,000 worth looking at it !!! Not sure of year so will find out tomorrow for you .
Grant the exhaust manifold headers will have a slip joint on them so it can expand and contract without cracking . The exhaust side of the turbo will turn 180 degress under the car and the rear box will be sideways and cut into the back panel of the car with the tailpipe out drivers side . That\'s the plan anyway .

Went for 275mm x 26mm vented discs and calipers from a Radical in the end due to clearance issues inside a 13 inch wheel .

This is one side of the front suspension bits they sell as a kit for Ford Cortina based kit cars . You get lightweight alloy bits and all the nuts bolts , bearings , hoses etc etc so really good kit of bits .

This thing will be an animal, what sort of weight will it run to?  I\'m guessing sub 800 kg which means a power-to-weight of 625 bhp per tonne with a 500 bhp motor.  Since 600 hp is probably only a fiddle of the wastegate spring and a remap away this thing\'s going to be fast!

Yes hoping for under 700 kilos and 800+bhp per ton power to weight ratio . I have Ed\'s old Jaydee large street ported engine with big turbo etc so could make anything between 500-600bhp if all goes well .

lol , Nathan is the man . Top driver with nerves of steel .
Didn\'t go down to the car today due to the snow etc but spoke to Chris and the fronts been chopped out ready for the steering and suspension mods and the rear frame for the wheelie bars and rear engine pick up is all finished . We\'re supporting/bracing the engine all round too stop the casings flexing/moving and this will stop some unwanted engine failures .
I\'m getting a cheapo 60mm wastegate as they are running them on my mates  drag car and they work fine if you strip them and check them over first . Also decided to junk the stock throttle body idea as it complex and has triangle shaped entry etc and just get a universal round single throttle body welded to an adapter plate and bolt this to the stock intake manifold . Probably run a 70mm throttle too match the charge cooler oulet size but not 100% sure yet until i\'ve done some research . More pics next week . :Thumbs-up

Post by: 600gaz on March 23, 2013, 05:53:47 PM
Cheers chaps . Shaun i have a large street port so could use 90mm throttle and reduce down to 76mm through the charger cooler .
12at , i can\'t use the stock throttle body as easily as the odd shape (triangle) and the elbow which convert to round pipe points the wrong way on my car . Seen aftermarket 90mm throttles on ebay for around £80-£120 so not too bad if i go this route .

gaz, what you have to watch with all the 4barrel intakes is most are missing the centre plate bolt, the beauty of the rxparts intake is it comes in either semi pp or non semi pp, the runners are good (better and less restrictive) and more imprtantly the tb is the only one on the market with sequential butterflies that allow for smoother street driving ;) roan is a good friend of ours and has helped us out with various things over the years

to be honest, with reg\'s car the stock intakes and 90mm tb became restrictive at over 700hp, but made alot more tourque

Howdy folks . Front end now taking shape . Very tricky though as the car\'s so small and there\'s not much room to get all the bits in . Here\'s a few pics .

More done on the car . Steering rack (shortened mk1 Escort 2.4 lock to lock quick rack) and steering column in , front suspension well underway and nearly done , underdash bar and upper front pick up points in . Also now got the 65mm wastegate and all the flanges ready for the exhaust system to be made .
My Fiat\'s also got Gary Goodings rx7 FD3 drag car for company so it\'s a rotary takeover down the chassis shop . Oh yes :Giggle

plan to mate yeah.......just trying to get the car finished.

Time and money are the 2 things im lacking in at the mo.

New tubby mani, full exhaust, new parachute mount, seat mounts, wipers being done at fab shop. Hoping to run the car in street eliminator class (FIA events) so it needs to be road legal......

Nice bit of flange, where did you get the flange from? Might need some flange myself.

Flange flange flange. Lol

I\'m using the escort rack too, much better than a crappy steering box

Yes Grant , sod the steering boxes . T4 Flanges on Ebay £15 . Engine ones are also on there for £40 .

Great project, its one thing building a race car with a shell a couple of years old but when you\'ve got to restore the car before you start the race car build adds a dimension that I couldn\'t cope with even if I had the time. Saying that, seeing what your doing with your old Fiat makes me think of what I should be doing with my 1967 Mini.
Well done, I\'m sending the link to this thread to all my mates.
Cheers martin

Cheers Chaps . I\'ve stripped the car at home since it\'s been back and it comes apart easy . Engine was very easy too remove on my own as i just slid a trolley underneath , undone a few bolts and dragged it straight out . :Giggle
I\'m not doing much else until next springtime so it\'s having a sleep until then . Roll on next year . :Thumbsup!

Quick engine mock up . Throttle body mounting flange just hits the turbo exhaust housing so this will need filing or raising up a touch as too expensive to alter all the turbo mount and pipework .
