Title: Anyone running a turbo fuse?
Post by: m1tch on January 10, 2010, 07:12:52 PM
Hi all,

just wondering who is running a turbo fuse in their cars.

Its just like the electrical fuse, but connected to your BOV, basically if the wastegate spring snaps or the turbo starts to overboost then it kicks in and opens the BOV.

Lets be honest, you aren\'t checking the boost guage all the time, and when on high boost you are concentrating more on driving!

Here it is:

Its adjustable to whatever boost level you feel is unsafe, im thinking of running one, has anyone else installed one yet? even if it costs a bit, will cost less than a blown rotor!

Its made by Go Fast Bits in Australia:

Think these are also known as a pop off valve. I\'ve not used one.

It still won\'t be fast enough to catch a boost spike - which is all that\'s needed to send Apex seals crashing around your housings.

I\'ve programmed up the emanage to massively overfuel if it goes above \'safe\' boost.  I tested this out by setting it to a lower boost value first - it works by \'bogging\' the engine and therefore cutting boost.

I think with an internal wastgate - it will fail \'safe\' unless the actuator jams mechanically - not sure about external wastegates.

However, I suspect a boost solenoid failure could hold the wastgate shut in either case.

Does this overfuel to the point that it kind of floods or does it just make it pop and fart a bit. I like your thinking you can sort my engine management when I get to that point lol.

This isn\'t a pop off valve, this reacts instantly to anything above the set limit rather then slowly opening like a pop off valve.

James\' FD - before he started tuning had his external wastegate spring snap, it boosted to 2.3 bar, the engine was ok though as it was built by Haywards lol

The product acts instantly opening the BOV to let out the air if it goes above the set limit rather than opening the wastegate.

I agree with running a richer map though :) makes sense and you will also know something is up :Thumbs-up

*flames coming out the back of the car* :rollin

This sounds exactly like a pop valve. Other than it uses a bov to do the poppin. :Giggle

It\'s not quite as severe as a flood - but it really bogs the engine down, and that makes the revs drop the boost drop and then you get a bang out of it on the run off, as you will almost certainly lift off at that point.  It\'s amazing how sudden it is.  I am sure it saved me from some overzealous boost controller settings, but like I said - you have to set it up at a boost you know won\'t harm the car, to get a feel for how much extra you need to overfuel by, then just move these settings up the table to just before where you don\'t wont to go and beyond.  That way, if the engine management ever calls these cells in the mapping, the car just bogs out and you get to drive it home :):driving

I think I might know if the T88 overboosts, mainly from the flux capacitor engaging and me dissapearing with a blazing tyre track :rollin oh and my face will no longer be attached :2Rolleyes like this:
