Title: idle problem still
Post by: gonzodave on January 10, 2010, 05:42:54 PM
I have just changed the throttle body on my fd and this over come the wax capsule problem i had (tick over 3.5k) now it seems to run ok but still ticks over at 1.6k i left car to warm up as it had been off road for a while but does not lower from ths 1.6k revs would this just be an adjustment problem or something else wrong, i want to fix as i am selling car due to buying house but dont like to sell car that has something wrong,
Thanks Dave.
Title: high idle

could be an adjustment, a few screws around the throttle can adjust the idle, the first one would be under the elbow between the two bottom bolts that hold on the throttle.

do a search for idle adjustment screw and you may find another thread maybe.
do you have a standard ecu?

or you could have a vac leak which would cause a high idle

Vac leak would be a prime suspect.

I had an elevated idle - it wasn\'t a vac leak though - my turbo\'s were weeping oil, and it was pooling in the air passage for the ICV - combined with the water from WI it formed an emulsified gloop which played havoc with my idle. Did you notice a lot of oil in the bottom of the TB when you took it off?

no not that i remember, but then i was not really looking for oil, the connection where i bolted the tb on if that leaked would that affect it, just wondered if it worth giving them a tweak up, or get something to check for leaks, i will have a look at the adjustment screw, i did look at it and think i saw about 3 different screws but not sure what they all do :-)

mine sometimes idles high - presumably you tried blipping the throttle, sometimes it drops after that.

yeah i left it tickin over for about 20mins coz it had stood for a little while an once warm i revved it a bit but it made no difference, seems to run smoothly so i hoping just adjustment issues, and i will check for leaks to while i at it
Title: idle control

Hi mate you got a apexi PFC or standard ecu.

mine always idled bad when i installed my apexi ecu, you could try removing the idle control valve, back of the plenum near the fire wall, it about a 1.5 inch cylindrical valve that controls the idle, mine seems to idle fine after i unplug it, but mad idle when its installed.

as above try bliping the throttle or dipping the clutch and selecting any gear. for some reason mine idles around 1.1k at times.

quick way to check for air leaks around the throttle body and other gaskets is to spray with carb cleaner, if the carb cleaner hits an air leak it will very temp fill the leak and you will hear the idle change as it reacts. best way to check though is a vac gauge from ebay. other obvious is the exchange throttle body was set up slightly different.

Now the snow has gone i will get out this week and have a look, it still on stock ecu so will do the check for leaks and the idle control valve and keep my fingers crossed....
